ONCE the old woman who now lies groaning on the floor of her home was the wife of resistance hero against the French Dap Chhuon.
She was reputed to have magical powers as a sorceress – powers that she claims helped protect her while soldiers loyal to King Norodom Sihanouk tried to gun her husband down in a rice paddy.
She survived civil war as a widow after her husband was killed in 1959, managed to remarry and have more children, but lost one daughter under the reign of the Khmer Rouge.
Now Chan Oudomsak, more commonly known as Domsak, lies on a simple mat. At the age of 83, her tumultuous life is drawing painfully to a close, says her daughter Kherng Bronorm.
Even her magical powers appear to have deserted her as she moans softly, a medical drip attached to one of her arms while the other looks painfully swollen.
“She became ill just before Khmer New Year in April,” says her daughter, who was the product of her mother’s later (and third) marriage.
“She’s had high blood pressure for a long time, but now her body is all swollen and she’s partly paralysed. She can’t talk very often but she does understand when we talk to her. Sometimes she can manage a word or two, and she can use signs to show what she needs.”
It’s a far cry from the glory days of the 1950s, when Dap Chhuon became a powerful warlord fighting to overthrow French colonialism.
History sees him as either a terrific guerrilla leader or a brutal thug who terrorised the province after King Norodom Sihanouk made him governor of Siem Reap in 1954. With a loyal following of troops behind him, he allegedly used force to quell anti-government rallies.
But during the late 1950s, Dap Chhuon – otherwise known as Chhuon Mehoul Pech and other aliases – became disenchanted with Sihanouk’s warmth to Communist China. He was suspected of being involved in a coup plot against the king, who allegedly ordered his assassination. That fateful day in late 1959 remains seared in the collective family memory, says Kherng Bronorm.
“When Dab Chhuon was arrested, he was wearing a normal sarong because it was a Sunday, his day off, and he was not in uniform,” recalls the dutiful daughter.
“He was in his rice paddy at Srea Noy when he yelled that he’d been shot. He handed his pistol over to my mum, telling her to kill him outright, but she was too frightened to shoot him. Domsak called out loudly to the soldiers please to stop shooting, but they kept firing.
“However, they couldn’t kill her or Dap Chhuon then because she had magical spells protecting her.
“My mother was then taken away by truck and held for a few days before she was released. By then, her husband had disappeared,” says Kherng Bronorm.
Now that life is slipping away from Domsak, her daughter is appealing for sponsors who may have admired her husband and his resistance against French colonists to help ease her last few moments.

DAP CHHOUN or (MACHOLPICH),SHOULD BE PUNISHED LIFE IN PRISON FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE!.HE SHOULDN'T BE SHOT LIKE ANIMAL,AT LEASE HE USED TO KICKED THE FRENCH'ASS OUT OF CAMBODIA.THE SOLDIERS ARE ALWAYS DIED FOR THE KING,BUT THE KING NAME IS ALWAYS FAMOUS IN THE HISTORY.THE YOUNG SOLDIER DIE,THE OLD MAN DOES THE TALKING!.I SAID FUCK FUCK THEM ALL!.THAT'S WHY,I DISLIKE THE IDIOT MONARCHY,THEY ARE THE SAME PEOPLES LIKE THE ORDINARY PEOPLES!.
THE REMEMBER THE DARK MOMENT OF MR. DAP CHHUON.
SIHANOUK ALWAYS DESTROYED THE CAMBODIAN HEROS DURING HIS RULING TIME IN CAMBODIA.
DAP CHHUON AND SAM SARY WERE KILLED BY SIHANOUK AT THE SAME TIME. SIHANOUK ACCUSED THESE TWO HEROS AS ALLIED TO THE AMERICANS.
SAM SARY IS SAM RAISY'S FATHER. THIS MAN HELPED SIHANOUK TO FIGHT THE FRENSH COLONIALISM.
Please have mercy on her. She has live a long life. She is a human being. Please be kind to her -- let her know she is one upon a time had contribute to help get the French out of our country. She should not be forgotten. She is one of many Khmer heros that contribute to get Khmer independent from French colonization!
My gratitude for your good deed to Khmer's land.
Maybe if the French stayed during that time they could have create a buffer zone from the Viet. Cambodia during that time had very minimal soldiers.
we all will get old sooner or later. i think cambodia should look into reforming our social services system like social securtiy, medicare, etc, etc... we should take care of our elderly, etc... because right now, it is still very traditional i.e. the oldest daughter is always taking care of the elderly parents. i think in the future, cambodia should have nursing homes, condolescene homes, etc, etc like in america. we must take care of our elderly citizens, etc, you know! that's one area to look into revamping cambodia's healthcare system and so forth, i think! please don't neglect the elderly, the handicapped, the disabled, the poor, the disadvantaged, etc, etc, ok! our gov't must be accountability and take good care our citizens in every way, really! god bless cambodia.
i think that's why people lost confidence and trust in gov't because gov't is too slow to recognize and take care of the elderly and so forth. we need social services reforms, you know!
12:44 pm,
It is not that the govt. does not recognized to take care the elderly people, they just beleive that if they left the elder people long enough -- they all will die out (please forgive me for saying this), but this the mentality of those people in power, which suppositely to take care their subject (the people).
Please Cambodian people, we have to hold the government responsible of their duty, and their commitment to the people. Don't let them get aways with their incompetant and still demand people to respect them.
cambodia must not neglect about having social services for the elderly, etc! we need to take care of our people!

Thanks for supporting this. We have to take care each others -- whether they are old or young, they are human, and we have an obligation to take care those that are less capable than us!

At that time(1959)I was in Siemreap.
Dap Chhuon was of Siemreap and
K.Thom(Autonomous)provinces.He
wanted one more province,B.bang,
But Sihanouk rejected his request.
His house has two stories with
basement.The road lead from S.Reap
town to Angkor Wat,his house is on
the right side, close to Suryavarman II High School.
On a weekend,he wore Sarong silk
and stayed in his orange orchard,
North of his house.
A big truck loaded with soldiers
drove into his house.
One of soldiers asked Dap Chhuon,
but he said,"he is in the house".
Dap Chhuon escaped and crossed
the river(S.Reap river can walk
and cross it in Summer).
He ran and ran along with few
soldiers and reached Kdomsak house
far and far east side of Siem Reap.
She asked soldiers not to kill him,
her magic could not help.
I forgot to tell about Neang Chek
and Neang Chôm,(ancient sculptures)
magic.Dap Chhuon could take,lift
these two magics because he was
man of traitor.
The soldiers killed and dragged Dap Chhuon like a dead dog.
They threw him on the ground and did not bury him. They dragged and
threw him away on high ground at far West side,of S.Reap buses station.
DAP CHHUON wanted to wipe out
monarchy.
1:53 am,
Thank you for sharing this history! So did he love Khmer people or was he just wanted more power for himself! Why did he wanted to wipe out monarchy --what had monarchy had done wronge toward Khmer people? Did he study abroad that expose him to democratic's value?
Thanks in advance if you have time to respond.
Monarchy is a waste, stupit and they fuck their own mother. If you want to save your country, you need to wipe them out.
i don't support any khmer who fight with other khmer and who advocate violence! i think they are good for the battle field, but not good for leadership! maybe they lack higher education, i can't tell for sure, you know!
9:12 am,
I definitely second on the revolution with nonviolence! Khmers have been suffering enough...as I had gone through the kR regime...I am not ready YET to fight another battle for ideology!
