THAILAND-CAMBODIA TO SEEK JOINT REGISTRATION OF CLASSICAL DANCE AND GRAND SHADOW PLAYS WITH UNESCO

Dear All,

BERNAMA, Malaysian National News Agency reported on 16 August that according to the Thai Minister of Culture Cambodia and Thailand "are seeking a joint registration of classical dances and grand shadow plays respectively as traditional cultures of both neighbouring countries with UNESCO".

Questions:

1) Has anyone seen similar information in Cambodian newspapers?

2) Is this action a precursor to Preah Vihear been registered jointly by Cambodia and Thailand?

Thank you for your feed back

Best regards

Julio A. Jeldres

JOINT?? Why JOINT?

That is stupid. That would be degrading Khmer culture. I'm not anti-thai but its a well known historical fact on where thai adopted these dances from.

If it's true then it's another stupid idea that shows the Khmer leader mentality and the Thais who will do anything to marginalize the Cambodia on international stage. Why do we have to joint anything with the Thais? Why???? Do it separately who ever gets the approval good on them.....not joint......I'm concern about the Preah Vihear issue as Ambassador Julio A Jeldres has raised.....How stupid idea is this....

Subject: A proposal or even an attempt to have a joint registration of classical dances and grand shadow with UNESCO by Cambodia and Thailand

Two schools of thoughts exist in this controversy:

1) Thailand is very unscrupulous and quite bold in demanding to be part of the registration of something that only Cambodia can claim to have the total right for registration with UNESCO. Therefore, a joint registration is not welcomed.

2) History has shown and the world has known for so many years that Thailand adopted undeniably a lot of Cambodian culture, tradition, dances, rituals, alphabets and words, etc. as theirs. In addition through years of territorial conquest, many Cambodians are now living in Thailand as Thai citizens. It is certainly an honor that a country such as Thailand who usually looks down on Cambodians and Cambodia to finally confess without shame that what they are so proud of is indeed belonging to Cambodia.

I tend to lean towards option 2 since there is no need to fight over ownership as everyone in the world knows clearly who is the actual owner of the classical dances and grand shadow.

Having said that I will not and absolutely not accept the joint registration of Preah Vihear with Thailand.

If Cambodia has to go to war to defend Preah Vihear and its surrounding area and there is no other way to solve the problem and the Thais want shared ownership of Preah Vihear, then we go to war!

We love peace and stability since we have known what wars can do to society, but we will not rest still and allow Thailand to steal from us while we are still watching no matter how poor and weak we are still.

You can call our tradition, culture, dances, language yours since you love them too much and have none, but you will not take even one inch of our land!

I'm more concern now about the Preah Vihear issue with this new Thais government in power than the Abish/PAD government. I view all Thais leaders/politicians are the same when it comes to national sovereignty. With cold and appeasement policies strategy the new Thais government will be able to persuade the one Man show, Hun Sen, in Cambodia to do anything in their favor.

I know we cannot talk about the Eastern issues, but at least we us one can talk in one voice on the Western issues with the shameless neighbor.

This is wrong. Anything joint with Thailand a dead sentence for Khmer culture and heritage. Thailand does not want to recognize Khmer culture superiority but instead they are trying to make it of their own... It is just plain wrong and the root cause of all problem. Cambodia must fight on for the long term... exposing their Thailand intent to the world and let the UNESCO be the judge.

it would be more appropriate if the neighbor countries seek permission to participate in the celebration of our khmer preh vihea temple.

Cambodia must ever never joint registration with Thailand. Cambodia must hold its ground strongly. With Thai Muy Dombor ning Bourn it is the same amount.
