Cambodia, U.S., Australia hold joint exercise

PHNOM PENH, Sep 12, 2011 (Xinhua) -- The United States, Australia and Cambodia will participate in the joint crisis-response exercise "Ellipse Charlie 2011" near Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville throughout September, according to a press release from the U.S. embassy in Phnom Penh on Monday.

Civilian government agencies and service members from all three nations will participate in the exercise, it said.

"This integrated government approach aims to create the most realistic environment to respond to crises, deepen security partnerships, and contribute to regional stability while enhancing bilateral relations," said the statement.

Additionally, the United States will offer technical assistance through a team of crisis-response experts to advise, assist and assess Cambodia's crisis management capabilities.

"This exercise presents an opportunity to evaluate planning capabilities and coordinate activities across several organizations in an effort to promote security, stability and prosperity in Cambodia and throughout the region," said U.S. Ambassador to Cambodia Carol A. Rodley.

Ellipse Charlie provides a unique venue to foster and strengthen the U.S. government's security relationship with Cambodia. While U.S. Pacific Command coordinates Ellipse Charlie exercises on an annual basis, this year marks the first time that Cambodia is participating in the exercise.
