“Even had they given me the flesh of a human being, I would have eaten it.”
Lawyers for the civil party applicants at the Khmer Rouge tribunal called on the UN-backed court to speed atrocity trial proceedings for four jailed leaders of the regime, following the death of a key witness and activist, Vann Nath, on Monday.
The death of Vann Nath, who was one of only seven survivors of the Khmer Rouge’s notorious Tuol Sleng prison, has underscored a lingering concern at the court, that it will not complete trials of senior leaders before they too pass away.
“Vann Nath’s death reminds us of the absolute and urgent necessity that the trial in Case 002 start as soon as possible,” said Pich Ang, a lawyer for one group of civil parties.
Civil parties, which represent victims at the UN-backed court, are a key component of the court’s mandate to work toward national reconciliation for the populace terrorize by the regime’s policies. Many remain concerned that the aging defendants Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan, Ieng Sary and Ieng Thirith will die before they see their day in court.
“Seeing that both the accused and the victims are very old, then it’s not suitable to prolong the time for a trial and [the court] must start as quickly as possible a hearing to find justice for them,” Pich Ang said.
The court is currently preparing for a full trial of the leaders, which is expected to start some time next year.
Huy Vannak, a spokesman for the court, said judges are “pushing for the hearing as quickly as possible.”
The desire by victims to see a trial come quickly was echoed this week by many in the international community, which funds most of the court.
In a statement Wednesday, the French government urged the court to come to a final decision “without delay” on Duch’s verdict, which is under appeal at the Supreme Court Chamber. Prosecutors want more prison time added to his sentence, while his defense lawyers say he should be freed with time served.
“We owe this truth to victims, survivors and the whole Cambodian people,” the statement said, referring to the need for a final decision.
Supreme Court Chamber judges said last week they expected a decision by the end of the year.
Vann Nath’s death only underscored the time pressures on the court.
In life, Vann Nath was an ardent supporter for victims, and his painting and writings chronicled the atrocities committed by Khmer Rouge cadre. But he was also understanding of the court’s work.
When Kaing Kek Iev, the Tuol Sleng prison chief better known as Duch, was given a commuted sentence of 19 years following a trial at the tribunal, Vann Nath said that Duch’s own advanced age—67 at the time—meant he would likely not survive to see his release.
“I accept this punishment,” he said, a position not shared by many victims who saw the sentence as too light, given that Duch was accused of overseeing the torture and execution of more than 12,000 people.
Still, Vann Nath had compared his time at Tuol Sleng prison as a “hell.” He testified in Duch’s trial, crying as he recalled his incarceration and the poor treatment of prisoners there.
“I felt very hungry at the time, and it was the most hungry I’ve ever been in my life,” he told the court. “Even had they given me the flesh of a human being, I would have eaten it.”
Only his talent as a painter saved him. In 1976, Duch ordered Vann Nath to paint a portrait of Brother No. 1, Pol Pot, from a photograph. He did well enough that he was spared the fate of most of Tuol Sleng’s prisoners.
Chum Mey, one of the few to have survived the prison with Vann Nath, said Wednesday he wanted to see a final decision in Duch’s case.
“If the verdict is released very soon, we’ll have received justice very soon, too,” he said, welcoming the support of the French.
Soum Sothy, a former prisoner of the Khmer Rouge in Siem Reap province and a civil party applicant for the court’s upcoming trial, said he too wanted the court to move forward with its work.
“I have been waiting for more than 30 years, but when the tribunal was established, there were many delays,” he said. “And the accused are getting old.”

I remember when I was 15 years old at 1974-1975. Angkar ordered us to practice communist dance to welcome King Sihuanuk and his wife in front of thousands of Khmer Rough follower in the Jungle. I saw this Sihuanuk about 1.5 metres away from me. I was also believed in his speech and his communist Khmer rough influence. They made us have no fear even we had to walk into bullets or bombs. That're how strong this shihanuk made us believed. I saw his kissed and sack hands with Pol pot leaders and Vietcog leaders too. I remember I saw they eat nice foods in their private meeting office.
THere are no faire if you born to be Cambodian as me. This sihaunuk lead Khmer to died millions but his has no part of responsibility as khmer leader at all. That is really unfair.
They make us suffer but they are living in luxury with alot of money. Nothing is fair if we born as Cambodian! Sad and very sad to be born as Cambodian.
Where are UN, Human Right...? Why do they let these happen ?
Sihanouk killed a lot of khmer who

The worst Khmer leader and traitor of the Khmer kings is Sdech Sihanouk. He make his stupid policy with poor Khmers. Without Sihanouk the Killer foelds never happened too, during Prince Sarimatak fought Youn out from Cambodia (1970-75), Sihanouk called Youn to kill Khmer in Khmer territory. He is key figure for Viet annex Khmer land. We cann see clearly, now he work with Viet and its mationete CPP hand and hand. Two academician friends of mine from Beijing said to me "Sihanouk is not Khmer, if he Khmer he must stay in Kampuchea but Sihanouk is always living in my country (China) and north Korea". He is not good for your country, they said to me.
Khmer as the victims of genocide between 1975-1979, We need the real Khmer ECCC not this Hanoi-US ECCC in this fake Kingdom of Cambodia.
Just look at this and judge for yourself ( Dear Khmer readers ).
This Hanoi-US ECCC keep dragging on and on to avoid full public hearing.
1. Political interference from Hun Sen and CPP.
2. Wide spread corruption in this Hainoi-US ECCC to block the process.
3. Holding the suspects beyond holding period ( overs 3 years ) so far since late 2007-2011 ( nearly 4 years ).
4. By laws the supects have rights to have their witnesses .
5. Refusing suspects 's witnesses to showing up and spkeaking out in the court room.
7. And many more dirty tricks on the way for this Hanoi-US ECCC.
Note: UN ‘s role if neutral without US interference is very vital role.
US always interfere UN role if that role involved to US for instance US B 52 booming in Cambodia
between 1969-1973 , 200 days and nights has caused many Cambodian lives especially in rural
areas not only so many Cambodian lives but also caused severe starvation , I can witness this
as so many Cambodian fled US B 52 from the countryside to Phnom Pen Capital city after 1973
so many died on the streets even in those days we have Red Cross and also some other helping
NGOs but the size of this tragedy was out of control.
And this was North-South , US War that speeded from yuon country into our poor nation.
And this is only part of the war that dragged Cambodia into up to days hell.
We still and always need UN, US roles in Cambodia and in Asean country as a whole but we must learn
and except the truth that US role has double side effects and we must learn how to use the right side of these .
And this is the reason why I call this is Hanoi-US ECCC.
It all about Indochina Federation to put Cambodia into yuon yoke as they already did to Laos.

Dear All Khmers,
Well, it sounds like some of you have visiting Cambodia and seen lot of YOUNs in Srok Khmer, and some of you are living abroad. How do you feel? This is why I don’t want you to against the Khmer Rouge, Khmer Rouge original came from ‘Khmer’ and you are ‘Khmer’, thus I would like you to stop against Khmer Rouge. I openly admit that I were a Khmer Rouge cadre. With what happened during the Khmer Rouge reign and the horrific end result of it which 2 millions were slaughtered, I implore people not to demonize this regime and all cadres involved. Here is the thing, I was part of the regime engine, I was partly responsible for what happened. Simple as that whether I like it or not. That’s one thing that I have to bear in mind. Now, you should detect that I rather see Cambodians come together in solidarity. That’s noble. Who dosen’t what that? Everybody. But you are not to find justice and closure for those who were slaughtered senselessly. Because we all ‘Khmer’.
Khmer-KramMan,
Former Khmer Rouge cadre.
UGLY ASS KHMER ROUGE MOTHERFUCKERS!
ECCC, ICC AND ICJ must work together to find true justice for the victims of the killing fields.
