New Thai premier Yingluck Shinawatra has held her first official talks with her Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen on as the neighbours try to patch up relations after deadly border clashes.

Relations between Thailand and Cambodia have been tense in recent years, marked by clashes between troops along their common border and verbal sparring.

But all that took place under Yingluck's predecessor, whose political party lost to Yingluck's Pheu Thai party in Thailand's recent general election.

Cambodia's information minister, Khieu Kanharith, said talks between the two premiers were "fruitful", adding that they had agreed to move forward on a range of matters.

There is plenty to do; they need to demarcate parts of their land border, for example, and must also work out a deal on sharing oil and gas revenues from their overlapping claims area in the Gulf of Thailand.
