The sum of all Khmer people population living abroad perhaps more than a million. If someone know how to tab into this population resource this can be effective and powerful. Think about it, Khmer abroad have almost unlimited resources from their surrogate countries. Financially, if they were to donate a dollars each, that is approximately a $1 million (that can be used to help flood victim). A million voices to the UN, a million signatures for petition, or million people on Washintong monument lawn. Very powerful, isn't it??....

I think this is an excellent idea and one which will make a world of difference to our struggling nation! The Jews have been able to pool their resources from their own diaspora for many years, and used such resources to finance and strengthen their communities abroad as well as the state of Israel. It may require an organisation or Khmer associations though to start the ball rolling.
A 'Federal Reserve Fund' should be set up with an account into which Khmer people inside Cambodia and abroad will be able to donate their financial contributions in whatever amount they are able to contribute voluntarily. Even a cent counts towards something!
However, the crucial thing - I feel - is to take 'politics' out of the equation, if that be possible! The second thing is to have complete transparency as regards financial control, spending, agendas etc. Before all this could materialise, however, issues of unity and leadership among Khmers at home and overseas must be addressed.

Now it seems that some of Khmers have decided and actively promoted a new war to get rid of their “Kaddafi”! It is also undeniable a breeze felt from the jasmine revolutions in the Middle East. They are really urged for that because it seems that they really think that it is fully justifiable, regardless the fact that the wounds from the last thirty years wars are not healed yet. They argued that poverty is still there, corruptions are not eradicated, our economy is not as strong as of China and our society is not as good as in the West, etc. Regardless, they are ready to start another chapter of our history book, another chapter of uncertainties, unrests, sufferings, destructions, starvations, deaths or frighten life in refuge camps… Who know if that could be the last chapter of the book when we all know that vultures are waiting there to eat the carcass if that were to end up in ruin?
Do we learn anything from our History?
Please be patient and put aside individual interest and ambitions. A country can be more democratic and prosperous with peace and stability than with permanent war and revolutions. Look around us in the region and in the whole world. In prosperous Japan the LDP ruled almost continuously for more than fifty years from its founding in 1955. No one can say that the country is not a democracy. In Korea autocratic and military regime ruled the country most the half last century before it becomes prosperous and democratic nowadays. In Taiwan the KMT controlled the government under a single party state until reforms in the late 1970s through the 1990s loosened its grip on power. Now the country is a prosperous economy and democracy is strengthening.
Sure that we want a wealthy Cambodia with a democratic government as in France, or in Australia, Great Britain, Canada or the US! But should we know how long those countries took to get there? I do not believe that our country now is worst than in 1991 or in 2008 when it held the last election. It is facts that nowadays more and more countries around the world want to do business in Cambodia and we can be certain that business people do not want to lose their monies. Building a country is a work in progress and everyone should play by the rules which required a lot of wisdom and patience.
Our Khmer adage says: “Those who control their heart to reject anger deserve the greatest praise of all”.
How after Peace Accord signed in Paris in early '90 an individual can stay in power for that long or cannot be defeated in an election? Is the Accord it-self defected in design or the UN which supervised the application didn’t do the work properly? It should be the responsibility of all Khmers and all of the signatory countries if this situation continues to prevail! What is going on with people of Cambodia that allows this to happen?
How is the strength of the oppositions to the regime today? Are they unable to organize? Are they too weak because they do not have a charismatic leader or one that good enough to lead a unified front? That can also be explained by the fragmentation of the oppositions going from self-centered interest parties to those too extreme or too radical for the majority of Cambodians.
After three decades of wars, the country may not be ready for another one.
The memories of war are too fresh for many of us! Even recently there were many cases of families with lost and reunification under miracle circumstances. The Khmer Rouge court has yet to render justice and finger pointing to the main culprits of those responsible for the deaths of about two millions people, results of that war years.
One particular lesson learned from this darkest period of our history is that each time at start a group of Khmer dissidents decided that a war was necessary to reach some ideal objective according to the group’s ideology: The Khmer Rouges during the ’60 decided that they needed a revolution to build their ideal country which ought to be a communist one. Many of them have even started their struggle a lot earlier while they were students in France. In early 1970 general Lon Nol with the help from the US has joined hand with Son Ngoc Thanh movement to topple then Prince Sihanouk because they decided that war was needed to get rid of the monarchy and to establish a republic, pro-Americans and the West in general and against the communist Viet-Congs. Now it seems that some of Khmers have decided and actively promoted a new war to get rid of .their “Kaddafi”! But there has been one culprit which has never stopped wanting to swallow Cambodia. That culprit is Vietnam. It, mostly stays behind the scene, has created all kind of problems to Cambodian people such as promoting political movement called Khmer Vietminh to destabilize Cambodia. And Vietcong itself invade Cambodia after the fall of Sihanouk in 1970.
During Pol Pot’s era, those Khmer Vietminh or Vietminh have played a substantial role in those 3 million Cambodian dead.
Since 1979, Vietnam has tightly controlled Cambodia.
Both of you (maybe one person) should stop suggesting to Khmer people to sleep while Vietnam (your country or your boss’s country) is chewing and swallowing Cambodia.
Cambodian people have absorbed more than enough suffering from Vietnam.

You have exactly the same idea as Pol Pot of Domocratic Kampuchea between 1975 and 1979! You may know what ended up after 3 and half year of that regime. Would you go follow that same path again? Would China support you this time? And the rest of the world, the western world and ASEAN included. Cambodia now has 14 millions people when VN has about 90 millions. It is not a defeatism, but we certainly have other ways to deal with this. Please think about survival as a nation first. A strong economy, with educated people and goods friends like the US, the EU and China, Japan, within a community like ASEAN we will survive and be respected! Khmer people want Cambodia and Vietnam to abide by the 1991 Paris peace accord, which were signed by both of them, and abrogate all bilateral treaties between Cambodia and Vietnam - 1979,1981, 1983, 1985, and 2005.

I agree with $1 donation. But if you can collect that much ($1 million), you should do something else for the better of country. It is good to help poor people now but when the election arrives, most of them will vote for CPP again. We can't blame them because they have never seen the bad side of Hun Sen and CPP.
If you can collect that much money, use it to support an opposition to fight Hun Sen and CPP instead. If 1 million Khmers donate one dollar each per month, from now to the election day in 2013 you will have at least $20 million to fight that regime. This is not much compare to CPP money but it is good enough to get the job done (50+1).
In 2008 election, SRP spent about $4 million and got 26 seats. HRP spent $0.6 million and got 3 seats. Can you imagine how many seats if SRP has $20 million to do the election?
I am not a member of any party. One year before 2003 election, I collected $8000 from friends, families and ceremonies. Because I wanted to help the poor, I went to Cambodia and digged 30 wells for clean water for 25 villages. Then I asked people in those villages to vote for SRP. They said YES. But 95% of those poor villagers voted for CPP in 2003. I learned my lesson. If I can collect that much money again, I will use to support SRP or HRP instead.
Help the poor is good but they can't change anything and they are still poor for life.

I do not agree with the idea of getting Khmer expat helping the people in srok Khmer without the people in srok Khmer helping themselves first. One must help oneself first before anybody can help them.
Firstly, by helping the people in srok Khmer we are turning a blind eye to the mismanagemen to the country by the Cpp. What happens to the aid money, the loan money and the natural resources of srok Khmer? They all seem to disappear into the pockets of the Cpp clique instead of developing the country and bring people out of poverty.
Secondly, we are setting a bad precedent for the people in srok Khmer because they know they can fall back on the Khmer expats for their inaction. What I mean is that the majority of poor people living in srok Khmer should see and know by now that they are being exploited by the Cpp for their votes. Yet they still vote for the Cpp and shout for help and beg for charity each time something happens to them. The commune and parliamentary elections are approaching and if they still vote for the Cpp, with or without pressure from the Cpp, then I think it is fair to let these people live like they desire. People in the middle east and arab world rise up for less misery than the people in srok Khmer but yet the Khmers are cowards and only good for begging. They must bear in mind that if nothing is ventured then nothing is gained. A sacrifice of a few thousands for the safeguard of the country and well being of a few millions is not too much to ask of the Khmers.
