Recent speech at the bridge inaugural ceremony of Hun Sen on the comparing him to Col. Gaddafi is understood as
a consoling lullaby for his personal nervous soul. The video clip of beating up and humiliating of Gaddafi is not acceptable for those who love human rights and human dignity but it has truly terrified dictators worldwide.All dictators have been defined as:
- staying in power too long or forever
- transferring power to their own kin under the umbrella of family when they are in aging condition
- terrify their own objectives (citizens) not to stand up bargaining their power
- monopolize national wealth, state media, arm force and create the rule of law that can legitimize their power
All these few considering factors of dictatorship, how could Hun Sen can distinguish himself from Gaddafi?
Hun Sen and his spokesperson like Phay Siphan said Hun Sen is different from Gaddafi because Cambodian people elected Hun Sen during the national election. How could election in Cambodia can legitimate Hun Sen power and push him away from Gaddafi's character when Hun Sen can monopolize national wealth, state media, arm force and utilize the rule of law to favor his absolute power? Election in each year is just a stage of Lakhorn to hide the reality from Cambodian people and the international communities.
For Hun Sen, he used the past tragic war to terrify Cambodian people and his recent speech culminated this. His logic based that the toppling of Gaddafi stemmed from war of the opposition. In this matter, Hun Sen wanted to tell us that if "you want to make Hun Sen like Gaddafi, you must rise up by grabbing guns and fight against him". He also encouraged Cambodian dissents by providing a big stock of ammunition supply.
In this matter, Hun Sen can use the reality smarter and clearer than his spokespersons Phay Siphan. Note that Phay Siphan has always stated that all trials to punish dissents are the path to strengthening the rule of law in Cambodia.
At the end, Hun Sen is still terrified by the image of death of Gaddafi. Not only opposition which can topple Gaddafi. The loyal persons close to Gaddafi are also pointing gun at Gaddafi. The NATO and the international communities are also in favor of the opposition. In reality, the people of Libya have supported Gaddafi more than current support of Cambodian people towards Hun Sen.
Let consider few factors that make Hun Sen terrifying at the moment:
- Hun Sen has realized that his prolonging term in power will end up like Gaddafi although he can use the past genocide, the election and the physical development of Cambodia at the present to legitimize his power.
- His fate will end up like Gaddafi either by his dissenters, or by his contenders within the CPP, or by the international communities.

Among those dictators, Mubarak has shared similarity with Hun Sen. In every election in Egypt, Mubarak always won and could claim his power legitimacy. But the people of Egypt cannot tolerate with that fake election and finally Mubarak must fight with the court although he is living inside the steel cage.
Seeing these falling down of dictators, rumors within the throne of Hun Sen have haunted Hun Sen's power. Hun Sen has cancelled Boat Racing Ceremony this year is not from something else but power protection for himself. The recent birthday ceremony for King Norodom Sihanouk is just a tool to pressure those contenders in his party ring. Only Hun Sen and powerless Heng Samrin appeared at the Birthday Ceremony of the former King. Chea Sim has been politically absent from the scene. Chea Sim must be so painful on the effort of Hun Sen to purge his associates.
Why in Cambodia, only the people who are close to Chea Sim have been arrested of corruption and trading drug? All people who are close to Hun Sen are all very good?
Hun Sen is in a nightmare and I don't think he can run away from this nightmare in this 2011.

How after Peace Accord signed in Paris in early '90 an individual can stay in power for that long or cannot be defeated in an election? Is the Accord it-self defected in design or the UN which supervised it application didn’t do the work properly? How is the strength of the oppositions to the regime today? Are they unable to organize? Are they too weak because they do not have a charismatic leader or one that good enough to lead a unified front? That can also be explained by the fragmentation of the oppositions going from self-centered interest parties to those too extreme or too radical for the majority of Cambodians.
After three decades of wars, the country may not be ready for another one. The memories of war are too fresh for many of us! Even recently there were many cases of families with lost and reunification under miracle circumstances. The Khmer Rouge court has yet to render justice and finger pointing to the main culprits of those responsible for the deaths of about two millions people, results of that war years.
One particular lesson learned from this darkest period of our history is that each time at start a group of Khmer dissidents decided that a war was necessary to reach some ideal objective according to the group’s ideology: The Khmer Rouges during the ’60 decided that they needed a revolution to build their ideal country which ought to be a communist one. Many of them have even started their struggle a lot earlier while they were students in France. In early 1970 general Lon Nol with the help from the US has joined hand with Son Ngoc Thanh movement to topple then Prince Sihanouk because they decided that war was needed to get rid of the monarchy and to establish a republic, pro-Americans and the West in general and against the communist Viet-Congs. Now it seems that some of Khmers have decided and actively promoted a new war to get rid of their “Kaddafi”! It is also undeniable a breeze felt from jasmine revolutions in the Middle East They are really urged for that because it seems that they really think that it is fully justifiable, regardless the fact that the wounds from the last thirty years wars are not healed yet. Their arguments: democracy, corruptions, poverty... Regardless, they are ready to start another chapter of our history book, another chapter of uncertainties, unrests, sufferings, destructions, starvations, deaths or frighten life in refuge camps… Who know if that could be the last chapter of the book when we all know that vultures are waiting there to eat the carcass if that were to end up in ruin?
Do we learn anything from our History?
Please be patient and put aside individual interest and ambitions. A country can be more democratic and prosperous with peace and stability than with permanent war and revolutions. Look around us in the region and in the whole world. In prosperous Japan the LDP ruled almost continuously for more than fifty years from its founding in 1955. No one can say that the country is not a democracy. In Korea autocratic and military regime ruled the country most the half last century before it becomes prosperous and democratic nowadays. In Taiwan the KMT controlled the government under a single party state until reforms in the late 1970s through the 1990s loosened its grip on power. Now the country is prosperous economy and democracy is strengthening.
Sure that we want a wealthy Cambodia with a democratic government as in the Wesr? But should we know how long those countries took to get there? I do not believe that our country now is worst than in 1991 or in 2008 when it held the last election. It is facts that nowadays more and more countries around the world want to do business in Cambodia and we can be certain that business people do not want to lose their monies. Building a country is a work in progress and everyone should play by the rules which required a lot of wisdom and patience.

Developmental states like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, you have mentioned is very different from Cambodia.
Vietnam installed Hun Sen and Vietnam has taken this installation to amputate Cambodia in all aspects. You think Hun Sen's brain is similar to those leaders in Japan, S. Korea and Taiwan? Has any relevant studied in comparing to those leaders in the sample three countries? NON.
It is just the manipulative rhetoric of Cambodian elites to cheat Cambodian people.
The rule of law of Cambodia you have mentioned are strengthening is absolutely wrong. It is the rule of law to prolong the ambition of power of Hun Sen. You can ask this question to Phay Siphan again who has relentlessly stated that Cambodia is moving forward in strengthening the rule of law.
Regarding strengthening the opposition for the alternative survival of Cambodia is a good idea, but ask Hun Sen, does he have such vision? Hun Sen's vision is to kill all key oppositions. His vision is his family and personal power, not the country interest.
As a young Khmer, I can see that Cambodia will move no where under the blind leadership of Hun Sen and his cronies.

Well said. The person above is no one other than the Cambodian elite whose intention is to keep the status quo so they can continue to benefit from the corrupted and incapacitated regime. Despite the fact that I agree with his/her assessment regard peace and stability in the long run will lead to rule of law and it will lead to a more democratic country. The question is how much more time does Cambodia need in order to reach to the level of those countries? After 30 years time the only progress that Cambodia can dare to compare is of its past? Cambodia will continue to only be able to compare her progress to her past if the leader has no vision or no political will to improve. In addition, how can the progress take place when the current leader's main interest is to preserve personal political power and not the progress of the nation? The person above can afford to keep the status quo because he/she is not suffering, and not experiencing the hardship of the average Khmer people. On a more serious note, Khmer people can not just sit and wait for the good thing to happen while illegal immigration flow freely into Cambodia. We can not wait to see Cambodia turning into Champa II, Khmer Krom II or Laos II. The national interest and the interest of the people is to insure Cambodia to exist as a nation. This is an urgent matter above all else - above stability and peace, above progress and above democracy.

According to the stats from the Ministry of Tourist visitors from Vietnam outnumbered tourists from other countries in Asia! I am pretty much sure that there is lot of Vietnamese at border checkpoints. But how many of them buy houses or have businesses in Phnom Penh and in provinces? How many of them have registered to vote at the next elections? Believe me that we share exactly the same feeling about colonization. Both of us think about the survival of Cambodia as a nation. I understand that some of us chose to fight as did Pol Pot. The outcome is everyone guesses in this game when we know that there are 90 millions of them, and this we didn't even count those already in our country. Look at the commerce between the two borders. No surprise there! Apparently, we can only beat them by selling more mouse, tons of mouse each years to them.
We should think about the survival first and with time, we can outsmart them and beat them in their game. Be patient and you will see that going to happen.
