You don't need a PhD to read the real history not a falsify history just search on Google and pick the history that wrote by famous scholars like Dr. Po Dharma or Dr. Mak Pheoun who do so many research and their research are valid respected by the whole world.

If you want to talk about these two then you should learn the source of the problems. There're powerful nations, China, Vietnam and US involved. These two are just small fishes, their lives depend on other powerful nations to decide.

Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge.
The Communist Party of Kampuchea was a combination of 80 % of former Khmer Viet Minh and 20 % of a Paris students group was created in 1960 by 3 figures as follow:
1. Tou Samouth.
2. Nuon Chea.
3. Pol Pot.
After 1954 Geneva conference there were about 5000 of Khmer Viet Minh fighters in Cambodia .
About 1000 of these former Khmer Viet Minh went to Hanoi with Son Ngoc Minh or better known as Achar Mean including other Khmer Viet Minh like Pen Sovann.
The rest of 4000 of these former Khmer Viet Minh later joined the Communist Party of Kampuchea through Tou Samouth, Kea Mea , So Phim, Rous Yim and many other Khmer Viet Minh senior military commanders.
So that why from the beginning of the foundation of this Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge there were about 80 % of these former Khmer Viet Minh fighters and senior military commanders
such as Tou Smouth, Keo Meas , So Phim and Rous Yim ect…
After the fall down of Phnom Penh to Khmer Rouge or Communist Party of Kampuchea on April 17, 1975 these former Khmer Viet Minh fighters became the chiefs of villages, communes , districts and Zones like So Phim in Eastern Zone Secretary and Rous Yim in Northern Zone Secretary .
Note:
1. Tou Samouth , So Phim , Rous Yim , played important role in joining all former Khmer Viet Mint fighters into the Communist Party of Kampuchea after the Communist Party of Kampuchea was created in 1960.
2. Nuon Chea Played an important role in joining other former Khmer Issarak like Ta Mok , Ke Pok into the Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge after the Communist Party of Kampuchea was created in 1960.
3. The First name of the Communist Party of Kampuchea was the Kampuchea Worker’s Party and renamed to the Communist Party in 1966 after Tou Samouth was arrested and killed in 1962.
4. Between 1960-1975 Pol Pot troops had increased about 40 % or 45 % especially after 1970s.
Pol Pot solders never train in Hanoi or worked under the command of yuon Viet Minh as majority of former Khmer Viet Minh fighers in the Communist Party of Kampuchea were trained and fought side by side wit yuon Viet Minh during First Indochina War 1946-1954 against French colony in Cambodia.
The founder and the members of the Communist Party of Kampuchea or Khmer Rouge are between 1975-1979 are:
1. Pol Pot the Secretary General of Communist Party of Kampuchea.
2. Nuon Chea duputy Secretary of Communsit Party of Kampuchea.
3. Ieng Sary.
4. So Phim.
5. Son Sen.
6. Ta Mok .
Ung Thavary keep writing;it was true,
after going to France,then to China.
Sihanouk asked Khmer people to the
jungle.
But instead of Khmer fighters,
Vietcong were all over Cambodia in 1970.
Sihanouk was/is Khmer killers.
Vietcong were Khmer killers in 1970.

We, Khmers, Living in Cambodia/ Kampuchea, were, are and will be victims of the policies of Hegemonists, Expansionists, Militarists of neighboring countries and superpowers. I still remember the wars, the atrocities, the genocides caused by them on Cambodia and Khmers-- The Carpet Bombing by the US B-52, the massacre by the Khmer Rouges and the trick used in the Vietnamization of Cambodia.
I highly appreciate some of the Khmer Leaders (of any time) for what they had and have done to Keep Cambodia to have a Name on the world map """CAMBODIA""" not Indochinese Federation that was and will be a dream of Vietnam or any other name that is a dream of Thailand.
We and all Cambodian leaders want peace, independence, progress for Cambodia and our khmers and live in harmony with the neighboring countries, But and a complicated BUT, those superpowers and the neighbouring countries have always pushing us to a point of loss in the dilemma...
They, Thailand and Vietnam, never want Cambodia/Khmers to further exist or live in a peaceful co-existence. They're trying by all means to weaken Cambodia economically, militarily and politically and morally with the ambitous aim to swallow Cambodia.
KR Trial is nothing but just giving a legal protection to the real killers, though directly or indirectly.
-US Carpet Bombing had killed several thousands of Khmer innocent the early 70's;
- Cold War waged by the Communist Bloc and the Western Bloc had instigated prolong civil wars in Cambodia, resulting in thousands of deaths.
- The communist ideology resulted in the killing fields in Cambodia,
- Vietnam's Ambition and trick of Vietnamizing Cambodia really involved in the killing of Khmers

I read ming Thavry Ung poem and here my reply.
1- King Sihanouk should be allowed to testify.
2- I am not sure ming Ung and her family were really going through jungle marquis as she said. (I don't believe). The fact ming Ung didn't know that Lon Nol was too corrupted and the US abandoned him, to later support KR.
3- Sihanouk didn't want to empty the cities, he wanted to use KR, it was Khieu Samphan's strategies to empty the cities. (Read Helen Cixous, published by University of Nebraska Press).
4. There were never Khmer Kings allowed Vietnamese in Cambodia, but they had millions while Khmers had a few thousand people. Jayajetha II had to fight Siem invaders and his father thought his son (Jayajetha II) married to the Viet princess could help to save Cambodia. Jayajetha II died, he did not give any land to the Viets, the Viets with mighty army took it and caused many civil wars after Jayajetha ii died. (Read 1st and 2nd Viet intervention of Po Dharma and Mak Pheoun). Sihanouk did not give any land to the Vietnamese either, they were inside since French colony. (Read French document in archive: Independent will be plunged into Viet Minh hands because they are inside.)
5. I have no ideas what ming Ung said. Her poem is helping Vietnam to attack Khmers only.

Well...King Sihanouk knew that the Khmer Rouge was winning the war and he want to be seen on the side of the winner and by taking photograph with these Khmer Rouge and he want to assure the Khmer Rouge that he is one of them and so do his ideology! But the Khmer Rouge was too smart for him and they used the photograph of King Sihanouk among the Khmer Rouge as propaganda tool among Cambodian population which the Khmer Rouge knew that majority of Cambodian population still respect and follow King Sihanouk.
Once the Khmer Rouge came to power and King Sihanouk was put under house arrest and shut out from the outside and inside world and no Cambodian people are allowed to come in contact with King Sihanouk. The Khmer Rouge used King Sihanouk and King Sihanouk used the Khmer Rouge!
