PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — A senior Khmer Rouge leader has told a U.N.-backed tribunal that he had no real authority during its brutal rule of Cambodia in the 1970s and that prosecutors are using inaccurate information against him.
Former President Khieu Samphan said in his rebuttal Wednesday of the prosecutors' opening remarks that their accounts tying him to Khmer Rouge atrocities are based mainly on unreliable old news reports and books.
He and two other former senior leaders of the group are being tried for their part in policies that led to the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians.

I agree with above comment of AP quote Khieu Samphan as saying that he had no real authority during 1975-1979 and the reason he supported Pol Pot or Communsit Party of Kampuchea because:
1.To save Cambodia from Indochina Federation such as protecting the infux of million of yuon illegal immigrants into Cambodia .
2. Respect Pol Pot when yuon Hanoi forced Pol Pot in 1976 to accept and sign new Khmer-Yuon border if Pol Pot did sign that new Khmer-yuon border Khmer would lose a lot of land both sea ( islands such as Koh Trol )to yuon .
3. Support Pol Pot between 1979-1991 till 1991 Paris Peace Agreement.

you are guilty, 100% guilty,
the proof is you still approve Pol Pot political behavior.
OK, Nuon Chea is a dumb, why he followed Pol Pot,
But you, Khiev Samphan, you are an educted man, you approved Pol Pot, you really a killer.
these people used personal revenge to kill people and destroy cambodia when they were in power, period! it was revenge by all of them including sihanouk, the resistence forces, the peasants, the extremists, the oppositions, etc, etc,,, all culminated during the stupid KR regime in power in cambodia. see what personal revenge can do to people? so true!
Something that all Khmers need to
think twice just for comparison,
between the role of Mr.Khiev Samphan back then and King Sihamoni today.I think their role
in terms of power decision making of these two individual are similarity.All of us Cambodians seeing on uour own eyes nowadays,
what's kind of power that King
Sihamoni has?,even though the
Constitution of Cambodia has inscribed that the King had the
power such and such.But the government of Cambodia (CPP)today
is still adopt the Communist style
to lead the country.
