PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - The three most senior surviving commanders of the 1970s Khmer Rouge regime masterminded one of the "worst horrors" of the 20th century, killing or enslaving millions of Cambodians, a U.N.-backed war crimes trial heard on Monday.
In opening statements in one of the world's most high-profile genocide trials, prosecutors said former President Khieu Samphan, ex-Foreign Minister Ieng Sary and second-in-command Nuon Chea had called the shots in the bloody "Killing Fields" revolution that wiped out a quarter of the population and destroyed the lives of millions of survivors.
The three were top henchmen of Pol Pot, the late architect of the "Year Zero" revolution under Democratic Kampuchea, as the regime was known. Between 1.7 and 2.2 million people died from 1975-79 of torture, execution, disease, overwork or starvation.
The defendants, who are charged with war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide, showed no emotion as Cambodian co-prosecutor Chea Leang delivered powerful opening statements to a packed tribunal.
"Every Cambodian who was alive during this period was affected by the criminal system of oppression which these accused put in place. The death toll is staggering," Chea Leang said.
"The forced evacuations of Cambodian cities, the enslavement of millions of people in forced labour camps, the smashing of hundreds of thousands of lives in notorious security centres and the killing fields, and the extermination of minorities, the countless deaths from disease, abuse and starvation -- these crimes ordered and orchestrated by the accused were among the worst horrors inflicted on any nation in modern history."
A fourth defendant, former Social Affairs Minister Ieng Thirith, was declared mentally ill and unfit for trial on Thursday. She remains in detention pending an appeal.
Their case is the second to be brought before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and could be the last, with rights groups furious over the court's unexplained rejection of a third high-profile case and allegations of misconduct, incompetence and political interference directed at the U.N. and Cambodian authorities.
SEARCH FOR JUSTICE, CLOSURE
With the defendants in their 80s and in ailing health, many Cambodians feel they will die before a verdict is reached in an extremely complex case that could last years. Prosecutors are expected to ask for the maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The Khmer Rouge era is still shrouded in mystery and most Cambodians just want to hear the truth about one of the world's most murderous and enigmatic regimes.
"We want justice so that the dead can finally close their eyes," Chum Noeu, 62, who lost 13 relatives under Khmer Rouge rule. "What is the truth behind all of torture and killings? What happened?"
The court has handed down just one sentence so far, a 35-year jail term, commuted to 19 years, for former prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, alias "Duch," over the deaths of more than 14,000 people at the torture centre he ran. His appeal is set for February 3 next year.
The defendants have so far shown no willingness to cooperate with the tribunal and are expected to deny responsibility. Ieng Sary has taken a vow of silence.
Nuon Chea's lawyers sought to delay the trial on Monday by asking for trial chamber judge Silvia Cartwright's resignation, claiming she had held unofficial meetings with co-prosecutors, but Judge Nil Nonn rejected their move.
Nuon Chea wore dark sunglasses during the proceedings and is unlikely to confess, despite recorded comments he made in a documentary film "Enemies of the People," during which he said threats to the party line were "destroyed" if they could not be "corrected or re-educated."
With a raft of resignations, long delays and expenditure expected to surpass $150 million by the end of the year, Cambodians have lost confidence in a tribunal that took more than a decade to establish.
Many just want to hear the defendants tell them why so many people had to die.
"I have been wondering for so long why this regime was so brutal, why they killed so many people," said Kim So, another survivor who lost 13 relatives, including his parents.
"I am wondering how human beings like Pol Pot and Ieng Sary could do this to other human beings."

Above are genocides, crimes against humanity and war crimes commited by Nixon, late Ho Chi Minh ( Hanoi )and Kampuchea Communist Party between 1975-1979.
Note: Half of Khmer Rouge soldiers and military commanders were Khmer Viet Minh like Heng Samrin, Chea Sim , So Phim , Rous Ngim and many more…. .
Genocides, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Cambodia since 1970s onward has cost about 5 million Cambodian lives and mass atrocities in Cambodia.
1. US B 52 bombing between 1969-1973 caused about 1 million Cambodian lives, starvation and mass atrocities.
2. Mass killing between 1975-1979 under the name of the Kampuchea Communist Party or Khmer Rouge which haft of this Khmer Rouge soldiers and militaries commanders between 1975-1979 were Khmer Viet Minh like: Heng Samrin, Chea Sim , So Phim , Rous Ngim, Keo Meas and many more... .and most of those KR soldiers and military commanders became villages chiefs, districts chiefs and Zone secretaries like So Phim in Estern Zone , Rous Ngim in Northern Zones.
3. K 5 plan under the order of Hanoi and implemented by Hun Sen .
Above are genocides, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by Nixon, late Ho Chi Minh ( Hanoi )and Kampuchea Communist Party between 1975-1979.
Note: Half of Khmer Rouge soldiers and military commanders were Khmer Viet Minh like Heng Samrin, Chea Sim , So Phim , Rous Ngim and Keo Meas and many more…. . were fomer Khmer Viet Minh who were under military command of Viet Minh soldiers who fought against French colony in Cambodia in First Indochina War ( 1946-1954 )after Geneva Peace Accord in 1954 some of this Khmer Viet Minh went to Hanoi with their commanders Achar Mean or also known as Son Ngoc Minh among those who went to Hanoi were Pen Sovann , Chansi , Chea Sot and those who stayed in Cambodia like Kea Meas , So Phim , Rous Ngim, Ya ( Nisaran ) and many more became Khmer Rouge or Kampuchea Communist Party in 1960 under the work of Tou Samouth and Pol Pot and their first and secret name was Kampuchea worker Party and changed to Kampuchea Communist Party in 1966.
The old name of CPP party during First Indochina War 1946-1954 was Khmer Issarak United Front and later changed to Khmer People’s Revolutionary Party both of this Party led by Achar Mean ( Son Ngoc Minh )so CPP was created by the Indochina Communist Party led by late Ho Chi Minh in 1930.
The Kampuchea Communist Party did not created by the Indochina Communist Party as many Cambodian and the West understand but half of the Kampuchea Communist Party or better known as Khmer Rouge between 1975-1979 half solders and seniors commanders of Khmer Rouge or Kampuchea Communist Party were Khmer Viet Minh like Heng Samrin, Chea Sim, So Phim , Rous Ngim , Keo Meas and many more.
But CPP create by the Indochina Communist Party and their old names during First Indochina War 1946-1954 when yuon Viet Minh and khmer Issarak Viet Minh fought against French colony in Cambodia were United Khmer Issark and Khmer People’s Revolutionary Party and the last one known as CPP.
ECCC is design to charge Gonocide , crimes against humanity and war crimes between 1975-1979 only.
But other Gonocides , crimes against humanity and war crimes also committed by :
1. Nixon, Kissinger.
2. Ho Chi Minh.
3. China.
4. Former Soviet Union.
1. Nixon and Kissinger must held accountable for B 52 bombing in Cambodia between 1969-1973 which caused about a million Cambodian lives, mass atrocities and startvation.
2. Vietnam war the North fought the South , US supported the South China and former Soviet Union supported the North and that Vietnam war spreaded into Cambodia .
So Ho Chi Minh, Nixon and Kissinger and former Soviet Union all must be charged with Genocides, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Cambodia.
So this is Hanoi,China-US ECCC in Cambodia.
ECCC can twist or turn real Khmer history around or upside down to many younger Khmer generation but not everyone.
Khieu Samphan said to a group of Khmer that he prefer this ECCC form up and process at Hague , Holland in stead of inside Cambodia.
And Khieu Samphan also says he will talk it out every thing he knows because if this ECCC take place in Cambodia it will be only one way ticket for him or in ohter word he will imprison hin for live.
He can walk into this ECC but will not allowed to talk as much as he want to .
But Khieu Samphan was only a nominal leader even now VOA in English still call him on their website that Khieu Samphan is nominal leader.
