Traditional artists from seven Asian countries are to join forces with their Thai counterparts in performing the Ramayana mask dance as a tribute to His Majesty the King on his 84th birthday anniversary.

Organised by the Culture Ministry, the shows, to be presented by mask dance troupes from Burma, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, are scheduled for Dec 6, 7 and 9. The programme, to take place at the National Theatre, is to be heralded on Dec 5 with a dance of benediction by each individual country.

The eight troupes are divided into two groups, performing on Dec 6 and 7, at 7pm.

The Dec 6 shows include Burma ("The Golden Deer"), the Philippines ("The Abduction of Sita"), India ("The Bow Contest and the Wedding of Rama and Sita") and Thailand ("A Grand Battle between Rama and Ravana"). On the stage on Dec 7 are Singapore ("The Incarnation of Vishnu"), Laos ("The Abduction of Sita"), Indonesia ("The Final Battle and Sita's Ordeal") and Cambodia ("Ream Leak Chup Leak", a scene depicting a son of Sita who grows up in jungle).

Then on Dec 9, starting at 8pm, the eight countries will unite on stage to perform the complete story in nine episodes, beginning with "The Bow Contest and the Wedding of Rama and Sita," by the Indian troupe to "The Return to Ayodhya" by Thailand's dancers. The highlight of the show is a performance of khon homrong music, in tribute to the Lord Buddha and musical and art deities in accordance with the khon tradition, led by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn and the Ban Plainern ensemble before the dance acts.

A dress rehearsal at 1pm, without homrong music, is open to the public.

Free admission. To attend, please email ramayanamoc@hotmail.com.
