Even if Sihanouk wanted to stick to his neutrality, his country will still be used as a pawn of a battle between Communist and Capitalist.
The US wanted Sihanouk to join with them, but the US did not guarantee to alter its allies Thailand and SVN not to invade or take Cambodia, and China wanted Sihanouk to join with Communist and help Ho Chi Minh (NVN) to fight the US.
Why some of you still think that a very small with no army like Cambodia can avoid the calamities?
Neutrality or not, the big fishes will eat small fishes.
i don't buy into that "small fish is eat by big fish" or whatever! there are a lot of small countries out there, and the fish thing is the animal kingdom, educated human beings are distinguished from the animal world out there. of course, we all can learn from the nature, but still there are law and order and rule of law, code of conduct, walking upright, civilization, etc that make us all human beings, not animals. so don't give me that crap about fish eat other other fish, etc, ok! that's only work in primitive, stone age society, you know! anyways, i thing i see about sihanouk then was he's too narcissistic, like a dictator prince. cambodia evolved around him then. other people have no saying, no decision making, everything seemed to be decided by him only. that's why cambodia was dragged into stupid backward, stone age, brutal KR and look what happened to cambodia. it's called greed, selfish, outdated and so on.
