Two tenants of the Royal Palace during the Khmer Rouge regime who attended the tribunal yesterday have polarized views on the culpability of former president and one-time Royal Palace resident Khieu Samphan.
In a simple blue shirt and sampot, 60-year-old Sar Socheat looked like an ordinary middle-class woman, not the wife of an ex-president who once lived under the same roof as King Father Norodom Sihanouk.
“My husband is a well educated man, who would never deal in betrayal, corruption or bribery,” Sar Socheat told the Post yesterday. “He never joined in any of the killing – what he has done is for the interest of the nation, for territorial integrity, the honour of the nation.”
Khieu Samphan’s wife was emotional at times while attending yesterday’s hearing with the couple’s youngest son, who is studying in Phnom Penh.
“I would like the court to find the truth about who is actually responsible for the killing,” Sar Socheat said of the court’s work to unravel the truth of the Khmer Rouge regime more than three decades ago.
“If the court needs me to testify in the case, then I will do it,” she said, adding she visited her husband about once a week.
However, another former resident of the Royal Palace, former Royal Palace cook Meas Channa, was not so quick to jump to Khieu Samphan’s defence.
“I always saw Khieu Samphan and the other two [Nuon Chea and Ieng Sary] holding meetings and sharing lunch together,” the 49-year-old said, adding that the former president would always do the food ordering for guests.
Meas Channa was just 14 years old when she was forced to begin working long hours as a cook in the Royal Palace where the King Father and Khieu Samphan resided.
“I think the charges against him are right,” she said, “He [Khieu Samphan] and others leaders gave orders to their people to do everything.”
Meas Channa told the Post she worked for Khieu Samphan at the Royal Palace for nearly a year and described her employer as a “strict and serious person”.
“It is the first time I have seen him in more than 30 years, I see he looks very old,” she said.

Khieu Samphan will face life sentence from this ECCC in Cambodia that why before he was arrested in late 2007 he said he wanted to see this ECCC to be established at Hague, Holland rather than in Cambodia.
Up to now Khmer VOA still call Khieu Smaphan is nominal leader.
Between 1975-1979 Khieu Samphan was nominal leader but Khieu Samphan strongly supported Pol Pol policy and Pol Pol 's act against yuon Hanoi Indochina Federation to Lao and Cambodia under yuon annex.
Thousand of Former Khmer Rouge be able to testify Khieu Samphan the real leader or just nominal between 1975-1979 but all were rejectect by this ECCC along with Nuon Chea 's witnesses .
So I agree with Khieu Samphan 's wife saying that Khieu Samphan never committed courruption and I also agree with her following comment:

This is Hanoi-US ECCC in Cambodia Nuon Chea always attacks about yuon deeply involment in genocide between 1975-1979 but nearly 4 years this Hanoi-US have done nothing about yuon such investigation let alone summon.

The Khmer Rouge at the time (April 1975) did not have enough manpower to administer the whole country. The Khmer Vietminh, who were created and brainwashed by Vietnam, seized the opportunity to execute Ho Chi Minh's plan. The Khmer Rouge Pol Pot and the Khmer Vietminh were both inside Cambodia during that Killing fields’ time.
In short, the killings during the Pol Pot's era were committed by the Khmer rouge, the Khmer Vietminh, etc.
If the Khmer Rouge created problems, the Khmer Vietminh and Vietnam exacerbated the problems. That is the fact.
That's why millions of Khmer perished during the Pol Pot's era. The killings were largely committed by the Khmer Vietminh to facilitate Vietnam’s absorption of Cambodia.
The K5 project in the 80’s, which Pol Pot and Nuon Chea did not involve at all, why so many Khmer people especially men were killed???
They should examine the Khmer Vietminh’s hands and Vietnam’s hands too. They might be stained with full of Khmer blood.
Why the puppet government is so apprehensive about case 003, 004, etc... if it is cleaned.
By this time, the world should understand Vietnam’s behavior. They are always tricky.
For example:
- In 1953, did Vietnam comply with the Geneva conference? NO NO NO
- In 1973, after signing the peace treaty in Paris with the United States, did Vietnam abide by that treaty? NO NO NO
- In 1991, did Vietnam comply with the Paris peace accord? NO NO NO.
So, it is apparent that the culprit is Vietnam, which is the master of making confusion..
