The Khmer Anti-Poverty Party announced a three-party merger yesterday – and indicated an interest in future mergers with other political parties – at its national convention in Kandal province’s Takhmao town.
Speaking in front of an estimated 1,000 supporters, KAPP president Daran Kravanh, who lives in the US, said the KAPP would merge with the Society of Justice Party and the Democratic Society Party ahead of next year’s national elections.
He also indicated an interest in merging with the Sam Rainsy Party and the Human Rights Party.
“We are merging to eliminate poverty,” he said.
“Today we have three parties coming together, tomorrow we might have the Sam Rainsy Party and Kem Sokha’s party [the Human Rights Party],” he said.
The candidate jokingly made reference to merging with the Cambodian People’s Party, if it ever wanted to be “released from Vietnam’s control”.
When contacted yesterday, senior CPP lawmaker Cheam Yeap said “we are not under Vietnamese control”.
Several of Daran Kravanh’s supporters – many of them foreigners – also addressed the convention crowd, including his wife, American Bree Lafreniere Kravanh, who said her husband had fled to the US 27 years ago to escape a Vietnamese-controlled state.
SRP spokesman Yim Sovann said yesterday that his party would be receptive to merger talks with the KAPP because it supported efforts to unite Cambodia’s democratic forces.

Good move Daran if you can merge with SRP your old buddy will support you.
Excellent idea!! Please think about our Khmer future and put aside our differences. We need to have a real democracy, starting by working together as one. I know many families who would love to be involved and working in Khmer with a newly elected Government.
Lot of capable and experience people are ready to lend their expertise to the new government but not with ah Hun Sen government.
It will take khmer only 5 years to catch up with the rest of the world. First put those corrupt people in house arrest, not to mention NEC members, then acquire the international bank to return billion of dollars belong to those corrupt back to the national fund. Elderly and disable people will have their pension for life. Every kids 6 ys and ups must be in school. Factory workers will have salary $100+ per month. All khmer will live in peaceful and harmony. This is what we want.....
I support this strategy, but in reality, many small parties will still want to hold onto their identity. Many of them knows they cannot win, and are happy to just hold onto one seat. Many have also said this move will only put their families in danger of threats from the ruling government. Democracy isnt a choice worth dying for.

Lok Daran, I truly support your merger idea. The more parties to merge, the better and stronger way to eliminate the poverty. One-big party should work together toward the real democracy, giving power to the people and eliminate the CPP, which you're right under Vietnam control. We can determine our own destiny. If SRP and HRP willing to merge with your party, it is even best.

Bravo Daran for your excellent idea to join with SRP and HRP that the best choice to win election . Please go ahead to announce immmediately , people in abroad support you . I like your statement above that Cambodia is under the Viet control . It is the fact except the stupid, idiot Cheam Yeap who is Yuon himself .
I have an idea in uniting Khmer nationalists parties:
-Big(SRP) and small parties have to give up their ego.
-National spirit has to be on the top.
-For small parties, if you can't unite; then don't run.
Otherwise you only destroy the democratic voices from the existing parties.
