BEIJING (Reuters) - China's state media stepped up its criticism on Saturday of the United States' planned strategic shift into Asia, accusing Washington of being a "troublemaker" responsible for mounting tensions in the region.
The commentary in the overseas edition of the People's Daily echoed the angry comments by the Global Times newspaper on Friday following U.S. President Barack Obama's announcement that Washington will expand its military presence in Asia.
The U.S. defense strategy was flagged late last year and is a clear sign of U.S. commitment to the region. U.S. allies and analysts said, however, that China had nothing to fear from the new policy.
In the commentary, Rear-Admiral Yang Yi wrote "it was clear that the new defense strategy was targeting China and Iran."
"Since the United States began emphasizing in 2009 its 'return to Asia', a variety of events that have threatened regional security have happened, turmoil in the region has occurred one after the other," Yang wrote in a front-page commentary.
"Anyone with an inkling of strategy in their minds can easily see who the region's security 'protector' is, who is the 'troublemaker' for the region's security."
Comments in the overseas edition of the People's Daily, a small circulation edition of the Communist Party's official paper, do not amount to government policy positions, but broadly reflect official thinking.
China is concerned Washington's new defense posture, as it turns away from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, is aimed at encircling it.
The Global Times, a popular tabloid with a nationalist bent, said on Friday that China must not give up on its security presence in Asia.
Still, China's response to the United States' push to shore up its security presence in Asia was largely restrained last year. After disputes with neighbors in 2010 and with an impending succession preoccupying the Communist Party, Beijing policy-makers have avoided diplomatic fireworks.
The United States has said it will seek to work with China but will continue to raise security issues like disputed sovereignty in the South China Sea, through which $5 trillion dollars in trade sails annually.
The sea is claimed wholly or in part by China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei. China is seen as increasingly assertive on the high seas, with several incidents in the region in the past year.

Don't surprise to have your wish fulfill sooner than you anticipated. Several years ago the Chinese Navy rained down the Vietnamese squatters and torpedoed its transporter on the deputed island near the coast of Vietnam. Vietnam is a thorn in Beijing's eyes and need to routed out soon. Lately, many high ranking Hanoi's official making frequent visits to pledge strong ties with China. Clever little tricky bastard!!! You make it sound like you are a Khmer Rouge or Chinese yourself whose tendency is to protect the Chinese and the Khmer Rouge (KR)policy at all cost while blaming the Americans and Vietnamese for Khmers' atrocities in Cambodia during KR's rule from 1975-1979. Was it true or not Chinese was KR's boss at the time they, the KR, ruled Cambodia? The 2 millions khmers who were killed or starved to death was done under Chinese nose and according to you, there were 50,000 chinese advisors in Cambodia. It's insane for Chinese to claim that the Chinese did not know the killing and starving had ever taken place. You mentioned that Chinese help Cambodia. You remember that China never help anyone for free. Just look when China helped KR during the 1970-75 war. As soon as the KR won the war, all our rice went the China while our khmer people were starved to death and the Chinese did not even care. Cambodia is lucky as it does not share the border with China, otherwise China will claim Cambodia as its land the same China claimed its neighbors' land now. In your opinion, just because China is a big country, it is free to claim any small countrie's land? As for Tibet, the Chinese invaded and took over at the time the Chinese was not even the member of the UN and there was no proof that UN supported the invasion. Sihanouk and Hun Sen alike, always claimed China is the only country whose help is without condition. Both, forget the fact that its Chinese tradition, government and immigrants alike, that every penny give or spend are recorded and we, Khmers, have to back eventually.

I only present facts derived from various articles I'd read, and it's up to any bloggers to accept or discard my findings. I am not a pro-china propaganda clique or belong to any political faction to smear other with pretext. I never bestow China as a savior of Khmer people but rather in term of a top investors in the country. If you're pro Hanoi/CPP, then no one is critical of your chosen, at least not from me. One thing is debatable is denials and come to defending of Hanoi's interference in Cambodia internal affairs!!! People can uttering deception and hire one's dark past, but truth never be concealed because of one makes believe.
