“Now, their destiny is in the hands of the Cambodian people entirely.”
With elections coming up in 2012 and 2013, Cambodians will again have a chance to elect their leaders. Political analyst Lao Monghay told “Hello VOA” Thursday now was the “best opportunity” for them to change leaders they are unhappy with.
In times past, Cambodians did not have choices, because their local leaders were appointed. That has changed, he said, but Cambodians must exercise their right to vote to take advantage of it, he said.
“Now, their destiny is in the hands of the Cambodian people entirely,” he said.
Cambodia needs good leaders, he said, quoting Cambodia’s former king, Norodom Sihanouk, who once said that Cambodians are good people with bad leaders.
“I think the statement of the former king is very much right,” he said. “We need to think about it.”
Elections are held, he said, as evaluations of the current government. “Are there any better leaders?”
Selection should come from merit, Lao Monghay said. That means gift-giving should be frowned upon as an obstacle to free expression—a bad habit that should not be allowed.
“Charity should be conducted through the proper channels,” he said.
It is up to the current political parties to select good candidates for the upcoming polls—local elections in 2012 and national elections in 2013—he said.
Ou Virak, head of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, said good leaders are those who respect the will of the people, even if they elect change. This helps a country develop, he said. A good leader has a vision for the future and is honest and courageous, he said.
“If there’s an election, the people should be able to vote for whom they like,” he added. A leader may not be perfect, he said, but he or she will come from the selection of the people. “That’s why in the long term, there are better leaders.”

Well, he himself forgot to look in the mirror. He should take the word "leaders" (plural) to a singular "leader", because he is the only one since the '50s that steering everything to this day.
I respect Dr. Lao Monghay what he has archived in his works. He said: “Now, their destiny is in the hands of the Cambodian people entirely.” I think it is impossible. Khmer understand very well about Khmer politics and they won't vote for CPP, but unhappily CPP steal the election because of fake Youn immigrant. Everybody knows that entire thing. I bet this election, Hun Sen will win again. Sourn Serey Ratha is completely right...I wish Hun Sen lost the election. Who knows more than Hun Sen, He is very sure that he will be PM until 90 years old. It surprises me a lot when I see Dr. Lao Monghai pronounce that phase. So sad to hear that………………..

Mr. Lao Mong Hay should say:
“Now, their destiny is in the hands of the Vietnamese people entirely.”
In fact, there are millions of Vietnamese inside Cambodia who are ready to vote for Hun Kwack, and the election committee belongs to CPP. There always will be fraudulent election as long as KOR CHOUR BOR belongs to CPP.
So, there is no hope to end Vietnam's colonization through election.
Solution:
- Filter the Vietnamses who have the right to vote.
- Change KOR CHOR BOR and replace it with an independent one.
This is the last Cambodian Election that the SRP would join, if the result of the election is still not fair or rigged, the Cambodia Nation Wide Uprising is the Way to Go.
Boycot the election now is not appropriate, so all Cambodians must GO VOTE for Sam Rainsy Party if they want Cambodia to survive from Vietnamese annexation.

I totally agree with your value comments. Of course with due respect to Dr. Lao Monghai, what he said was correct the destiny of Cambodia country is in the hand of entirely Cambodian people itself. But you have to think, We can change the bad leader by only educated people, but please have a look to the current chronic systems in Cambodia;
1/ How many percentage of educated people?
2/ How many Vietnamese people are illegibly lived in Cambodia and they are eligible to vote for CPP? (It's almost 7 millions)
3/The National Election Committee is controlled and managed by CPP leaders.
4/80% of dignity people are uneducated, so when CPP distributed gifts such as Krama, candy, seasoning,... then they turn their mind to vote for them.
So what Hun Sen said is correct that he will be in power until 90s.
Finally I would comment that Democracy system cannot work out and be implemented in our country. It's yet inefficiency.

agree, hope people use their voting rights to chose the free leader of their choice forever. be educated and don't let other dictate or think for you, please learn to think for yourself, khmer people. think what is right or the right thing to do, choose your leader wisely and choose the most capable one, not the ineffective one, and make sur they are qualified leader(s) in their own rights, nobody cares about their relationship to whoever, make they have what it takes to be a good leader e.g. good vision for the future, freedom lover, smart, wise and enlightened leader, not ignorant and stupid one, ok!
maybe people should ask question to their leaders, if that leader can answer honest and good answer, that leader can win in the election, i believe.
