The movie, Lost Loves, which opens at Cineplex tonight, tells the life story of Khmer Rouge survivor Nun Sila and gives young Cambodian’s an authentic, educational insight into their parent’s youth.

Nun Sila, 68, lost seven of nine of her family members during the Khmer Rouge regime. The movie begins with her life in a big house in Phnom Penh. It later illustrates her life in the Khmer Rouge camp where she was penned up with her children, desperate to keep her family alive despite seeing one relative after another killed or starved to death.

Her father, brother, nephew and children were all killed.

But the movie isn’t intended to generate biterness, hatred or revenge.

“This movie does not teach us to hate the people who did these things. But rather it reminds us of this period which happened to Cambodian people and which hurt them,” lead actress and scriptwriter Kauv Sotheary said.

Kauv Sotheary, 44, a Royal University of Fine Arts drama professor, is in real-life the daughter of Nun Sila whom she plays in the movie. She survived the genocide as a child.

Lost Loves began filming in 2007, though the production proved to be difficult. Kauv Sotheary and her husband who directed the film, Chhay Bora, invested their own money into the production. They encountered many financial stumbling blocks.

“It is a risk to invest in the kind of films that talk about Khmer Rouge strategies because we don’t expect many people will watch it,” Chhay Bora said.

An incomplete version of the film was screened at the 2010 Film Festival in Phnom Penh. After spending an extra six months to compose original music and make final edits, the production crew finally finished Lost Loves.

For Chhay Bora and his team, the movie entails an educational aspect.

“We hope the audience comes not only for entertainment but to learn about Cambodia’s history,” he said.

Kauv Sotheary said; “The young Cambodian generation is not into reading. They don’t like spending their time on reading the newspaper or history books. We can explain what happened through the movie, through visual communication. This way, it is much easier for them to grow in understanding.”

Cambodian history professors attended a private pre-screening last week, and Chhay Bora hopes to develop a strategy with the professors to screen the film for younger Cambodians at schools and universities.

Moeng Samnang from Pannasatra University of Cambodia said history classes should show the movie to leave a lasting impression on the youth.

Cineplex marketing executive Socheata Chea said, “Most young Cambodians do not really know about this. They know it in theory but they don’t feel how sad it is. They don’t understand what their parents went through.

“And most old people don’t talk about the past. The movie will reveal what happened and what some parents won’t tell their children.”

Film commissioner at the Cambodian Film Commission, Sophea Kim said, “I have watched a lot of movies about the Khmer Rouge but they were only documentaries. This is a fiction film based on a true story - so I get to see the story and feel the characters.

“My heart was beating hard and fast when I watched it.”

Though the movie is expected to be screened throughout Cambodia, there is one Cambodian who has decided not to watch it, Nun Sila.

“She did not want to produce the film at all, she is still suffering from that time. She has not agreed to watch this movie,” Kauv Sotherary said.

Concerning Khmer Rouge, it past we must look into the furture. They just want to make money by making movie of 'Khmer Rouge regime', I don't care too much about it, because I was a Khmer Rouge soldier and now I am an ordinarry person. I can understand that most the people including foreingers, they get not thing to produce, thus make movie by imitating the Khmer Rouge story. Com' on 2012 now, what would you still do to fight with Khmer Rouge. You don't whose who is Khmer Rouge, we all Khmer Rouges. Do you understand?

The main Youn Strategy is to hide his atrocity and his hypocrisy that they did behind the Khmer Rouge. Youn use s-21, movies about Khmer Rouge to tell the world that the genocide between the years 1975-1979 was committed by the Khmer Rouge; WHICH MEAN KHMERE KILLED KHMER. The familiar face for that propaganda is Séng Theary, Sothy Panh, Dr.Pong Chhiv Guek. How many time you have seen Séng Theary walk in S-21 with the import person around the world coming to visit Cambodia. Séng Theary at ECCC isn't for nothing. She was there is to sabotage the ECCC in order to protect the top Khmer leaders. Have you seen the show that Séng Theary played with her Dart Game.
Rithy Panh made a movie about the Khmer Rouge. Rithy Panh's mother is Madame Panh Sothy. She was my math teacher at Lycée d'application. She is Youn. Her closed friend is also a math teacher at Lycée Youkuntor was also a math teacher, she is also Youn. His brother today is a Hun Sen general two stars. Pong Chhiv guek in a conversation with a popular TV showing about world food. She said Khmer Killed Khmer. She was the one who bring tab water for you immigrants. Youn are everywhere in Cambodia since 1951. I grew up with them. I know them very well. A man he was my car mechanics, he speaks Khmer, he has Khmer tattoo on the body. He is a Hun Sen supporter. With good moment of conversation I Know that he has a Youn root. Finally, he told me that his mother is a Youn.
All Khmer must be aware about Khmer with Youn brain. They hide their identity among Khmer.

Can anyone prove me that Séng Theary isn’t Youn?
Can anyone prove me that Rithy Panh isn’t Youn?
Can anyone prove me that Pong Chhiv Guek isn’t Youn?
Can anyone prove me that Kem Sokha, Mom Sonangdo, Pa gnoun Tieng and Rong Chhun aren’t Youn?
When Kem Sokha and Mom Sonangdo were in prison, they tried to make a show to make you believe that they aren’t with Hun Sen. Have You seen the final result with Kem Sokha. Look over Sihanouk what he has done in Khmer Politics? His wife is a Youn; she’s never talked in the public, but behind the scene…Khmer must understand that Youn order Sihanouk through Monique.

When you read KI, you have to ask the question about the cause and effect with a big WHY.

After all, can KI Media EXPLAIN THE WORLD IN ENGLISH (NOT in KHMER) THAT YOUN WAS BEHIND THE KHMER ROUGE?

I Love Khmer very much, my root is Chinese. Cambodia is a beautiful country full of natural resources, but finally we do not have a worst neighbor in the world is Youn. Close your eyes and try to compare Youn, Laos, Siam in your mind as a neighbor.

About Youn, Use your own intelligence to look deep down to the root!

I definitely will see the movie if it is available in US. This movie will show what had happened in Cambodia, and will make us think the dire consequence if we don’t take care for Cambodia now.
To the KR blogger, you are lucky now because you had escaped to the West (assuming KI is blocked by Hun Sen in Cambodia). You now have food to eat and school to learn English. You should thank the West for giving you this life line, but you should also think about your fellow Cambodians, and think critically who is responsible for millions of dead, how it happened and why. Start reading Cambodia history and teach your children about Cambodia’s tragedy. History will guide all of us to a better future.

To Former Khmer Rouge cadre,

Do you understand the word “history”?
WWII ended in 1945, but they still make movies about it.
Maybe you did a lot of killing in the past that is why you don’t want to hear and see anything about the 'Khmer Rouge regime'.

Khmer people should learn good or
bad from the past;they are concen-
trating in the present;what to do,
how to do,why they have to do it?
The future will be just a plan to
bring up how to do it better than
nowadays.

How to wipe out monarchy?
How to bring Hun Sen down?
How to kill Vietnamese in Cambodia?
