New York/Washington D.C./Phnom Penh, 24 February 2012:  On February 3, the students of Social Studies teachers Drew Beiter and Joe Karb classes of Springville Middle School in New York practiced one Day of Silence and raised US$1,300 for Khmer students whose lives have been disrupted by the violent illegal eviction of their former neighborhood of Borei Keila and for Khmer teachers training on the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights’ Speak Truth To Power (translated into Khmer as Courage Without Borders) curriculum conducted by RFK Center’s Cambodian partner, CIVICUS: Center for Cambodian Civic Education.

Six hundred dollars will go toward school supplies for Borei Keila children.  The other $700 will be used for Courage T-shirts for the teacher representatives training with CIVICUS Cambodia, to be distributed at the national conference scheduled for June 2012.

On Tuesday morning, February 28 at 9 a.m., CIVICUS Cambodia will visit the evicted students with these gifts from the young human rights defenders on the other side of the world who through their one day of silence spoke volumes to the world.

We invite the media to join us on Tuesday in order that the ripples of hope created by these young New Yorkers will multiple, “crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance [Robert F. Kennedy in Cape Town].”

Watch this awesome video produced the students on their Day of Silence.
