HCM City eyes Cambodian river [-Ong Leung eying Khmer river]

March, 30 2012VNS (Hanoi)

Buoyed by the popularity of short-distance river tours, the HCM City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has unveiled plans to carry out a survey for a long-distance river tour from Bach Dang Wharf in District 1 to Cambodia.

The department's Travel Division is drawing up specific plans to submit to the city administration. The department hopes to begin the survey by the end of this year.

The city last year began a short-distance river tour from Bach Dang Wharf to Ham Long Craft Village in District 2, followed by the Bach Dang-Can Gio route.

Phan Xuan Anh, chairman of Viet Excursions, said since the river tour was tested in November 2011, his company had sold Can Gio mangrove forest tours and kayaking tours to about 1,000 foreign visitors from German cruise ships anchoring at Phu My Port. It takes only 15 minutes for tourists to travel from Phu My to Can Gio by river, but no operator has considered developing this route before.

you know, i think it is a good idea or vision to develop all the riverbanks in phnom penh and all the areas around it, you know. i hate primitive looking riverbanks; it's unsightly, you know. cambodia should start building river piers, etc in and around phnom penh, really! i think it's a good investment for some companies to do that as part of beautifying phnom penh as it expands into a metropolis, you know. and don't expect phnom penh to stay the same, it won't! it will develop into a prosperous, modern capital city of cambodia, you know! god bless phnom penh and cambodia.
