An outspoken environmental activist in Cambodia has been shot dead by military police near a Chinese dam project in a remote part of the country's south-west.

Chut Wutty was the Director of the Natural Resource Protection Group and had previously received death threats as a result of his investigations into illegal logging.

He was in Koh Kong province escorting two journalists from the Cambodia Daily newspaper when he was approached by military police near a hydropower dam project being built by state-owned Chinese company, China National Heavy Machinery.

Colonel Kheng Tito, a spokesman for Cambodia's National Military Police, said a military police officer was also killed by a ricocheting bullet.
