KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian police have detained a couple over the alleged murder of a Cambodian maid after the 24-year-old woman died of possible prolonged starvation, police said on Thursday.

Mey Sichan's employers telephoned for an ambulance on March 31 but paramedics found her dead on arrival, Mr Nasir Salleh, police chief of the northern state of Penang, told AFP. She also had bruises to her body.

A post-mortem revealed that she died from acute gastritis and ulcers likely due to lack of food over a long period, he said. The maid had been working for the family, who manage a hardware shop, for eight months.

'Definitely what happened to Sichan is inhumane. It is a shock to us,' the police chief said.

Sichan's body weight had shrunk to 26kg, almost half that of a healthy woman, he said.

Police detained a couple, the maid's employers, on Saturday, and are also questioning three workers of their shop to assist in the murder probe.

In October, Cambodia imposed a temporary ban on sending domestic workers to Malaysia following numerous complaints of abuse.

The surprise move came after activists highlighted dozens of cases of sexual abuse, overwork and exploitation among the estimated 50,000 Cambodian women employed as domestic helpers in Malaysia.

Reports of abuse in Malaysia have frequently surfaced in recent years and led Indonesia to stop sending domestic helpers to the country in 2009, prompting a rise in demand for Cambodians.

In August 2011, a Malaysian was sentenced to eight years in prison for abusing his Indonesian maid, three months after his wife was jailed for scalding the woman with a hot iron.

About 170,000 women, mostly from poor neighbouring Southeast Asian countries, work as maids in Malaysia.

Why AH HUN SEN government allowed these dirt poor Cambodian women to die trying to make a living?

AH HUN SEN government needs to wake up to the reality that some Cambodian people are too dumb to make their own decision or to understand the danger ahead of them and without enough information and they will die trying to make a living!

Why are these Cambodian workers are not protected? Sometime the fucken government must step in for the safety of the people and if the fucken government doesn't want to protect the people! Then ban the fucken recruiting agencies now!

Of course most of Cambodia peole are not clever like developed country citizen but it is not the cause of them. The poor and lack information, no protect from mafia government. If in democratic countries, the victims and their families can sue the government and recruiting company.
Of course we can believe in a dumb, monkey leaders, they not care about peole, only care about their families.

Who sent Khmer people to abroad to
work or did they go by themselves?
Hun Sen sent or went by themselves,
he has had to be responsible.

What Hun Sen has known has been power and money.
All dictators of the world have
done as same things as Ah Hun Sen has done.
After Gadhafi dying,they found out
that he has 200 billion dollars,so
Hun Sen after Khmer people kill him
they will find out how much has.

My story is very similar. But I SURVIVED to be able tell my story one day if someone will listen to it.

The perpetrators were some very high profile wealthy Chinese Malaysians
in KL with extensive Asia wide business interests in retail and
property.
Evil Psychopaths of the highest order hiding behind their
social camouflage and continued prestige to this day. In ensuing years I
moved to another country and learn't English so I could write &
tell people about it in my extensive memoirs that has been able to bring
myself closer to closure of my barbaric dehumanizing treatment, that 3
years later I still have nightmares..
I was a poor uneducated farm girl of 19 years old. Frightened to death.
I was enslaved for the 2 years, before i was escorted to the plane by the Chinese employer and given my passport at the boarding gate with not even a thank you. Starved and beaten. NOW I will seek justice and am looking for a TV or Radio entity in Malaysia to hear my case. My husband and I approached these people a year ago and they denied everything, and continued to put me down. They are pathological liars! Lied to protect their business in the MY marketplace as if they were exposed their share would plummet.
