Sir, I may have asked too many questions here but as a first-time visitor to your "poor" country, I was left in total shock at how your city is much more beautiful than my own Bangkok. Your city has everything and yet you still have your begging bowl out asking for money from richer countries.
Your Excellency Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, thank you for being such a good host during the Asean Summit in Phnom Penh on Tuesday and Wednesday. This visit to Cambodia changed my entire perception of your "poor" nation. Your country has always been labelled as one that still needs to close the gap with the better-developed nations in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
Some reasons why this view needs to change are as follows:
- The magnificence of the billions of dollars in aid money that donor nations have poured into your country is visible on the roads as well. Your country takes the cake for perhaps having the highest number of Lexus vehicles per capita. Everywhere Cambodians are driving a Lexus, and Bangkokians would probably feel out of place if they came here in their cars or SUVs.
To top it off, these gas guzzlers are not fitted with liquefied petroleum gas in the fashion that many Thais choose. Cambodians really know how to splurge money on the things they like.
- The city itself was as clean as could be but then I give the credit to your government for having managed to scrub it to the point where it was looking as spotless as Singapore, at least in those areas where delegates were either visiting or staying. What was more surprising was the fact that in the three days I stayed in your city, I saw only three beggars. Is this because your country has exported them all to its neighbours or is there a government policy to fine or imprison them? This was not just in the summit area but also in areas where tourists visit such as the Central Bazaar among others. I think letting other Asean members in on the secret about this would be really helpful, and it would show how Cambodia is implementing its "One Community, One Destiny" theme of the 2012 Asean chairmanship.
- You showed your true colours during the press conference. As chairman of the Asean grouping you managed to steal the limelight and focus purely on Cambodia and its domestic politics.
Your ramblings about Sam Rainsy and how Cambodia was not a puppet of China for 40 minutes out of the 60-minute press conference gave an indication perhaps that some wheeling and dealing had taken place before the summit.
Why would anyone ramble and defend oneself and one's country about a thing that is not true for so long? In doing so you lost the opportunity of a decade to show your leadership to the world by telling everyone how you would like to see Asean develop.
- Chinese President Hu Jintao was on a state visit to your country until just a day before the summit. Massive posters of him were still plastered around the city when the summit took place. At the same time you managed to omit the crucial issue of disputed areas in the South China Sea from discussions, prompting many to feel that the Chinese leader was in Cambodia to lobby against putting the issue on the agenda.
The issue of the South China Sea impacts so many of your fellow Asean members but still you ignored it.
- To add even more fuel to this speculative fire you went on to praise China for giving your country aid money with no strings attached.
Now what kind of message does that send to the outside world?
In venting your ire on the western world, which I would have to say has supported your "poor" country for decades with funding, you came out to say that you do not want money from overseas with strings attached to implement changes in the way your country's system is handled.
Sir, which organisation in the West or even the East (except China) gives out funds with no strings attached?
Quite apart from how great your city looked, I don't believe funding from western countries is required in your country anymore as the word "poor" probably now only applies to the rural population. I personally don't believe that the funding ever reaches those Cambodians in real need in any case.
- To make matters worse you managed to intimidate a journalist from your own country when you said "you had better get your facts right because there is live coverage going on". Rather than taking the opportunity to show a softer side of yourself, you managed to cement your image as a hard-bitten strongman.

I am not surprise to read this comment from jealous person of Thai descent. He thinks he is all that but just look what kind of message he is sending to its neighbor of ASEAN. He is supposed to enhance love and peace but instead he writes nothing but poor journalism from his jealous and small mindset.

Premier Hun Sen knows what he's doing. Don't question his ability and his tactics. It may seems wrong at this moment, but soon you'll realize his cleverness. Without Premier Hun Sen there would be so much Lexus in Cambodia. Even you admitted that "Bangkokians would probably feel out of place if they came here in their cars or SUVs". It shows how Premier Hun Sen is able to manage his country better than Thailand.

How could Hun Sen keep repeating that Cambodia is a poor country, when billions of dollars in aids flood in every years. On top of that Hun Sen also announce to the world that every eyar that make billions of dollars from trading schemes, last year Cambodia was said to have made $11 billions in trade.
Where are all these aids and all the money coming from and ends up going? International communities should pull back their investment, Cambodia is a lawless country, with a 5th grade primary school Prime Minister.

I like to know from AH Umesh Pandey about the Lexus and others luxury car in Cambodia! These are old luxury cars in the 1980 and 1990 and it is so old that it couldn’t even pass pollution test and other countries such as in Japan and United States would dismantle these old luxury cars and it will be dumped in junkyards or burn up in metal factories! Why are these Siem people should feel out of place about owning old beat up dirty polluted luxury car? This line of thinking by one Siem named Umesh Pandey spread so many misunderstanding between Cambodia and Thailand and that is why Cambodia and Thailand are locked in war and conflicts that never end!

PM blamed analyst about south China sea but he should blame himself and his foreign minister for lack of coordination in handling the south China sea dispute during Asean meeting, his foreign minister declared the issue of south China sea will off the agenda therefore analyst raise the issue what and why?. At the end of the meeting he blamed and insulted analyst and his critic of wrong thinking because the south China sea issue was raised in the meeting. I think PM is in his panic mood foresee his losing power or may be he became old he lost all his credibility. Goodluck PM!
It very true that there is an abundance of Lexus vehicles in PP. The question is if this reflects the economic development of Cambodia or the level of corruption and grafting. How come that so many of those vehicles has blue/red number plates? How many Lexus do you see outside PP, for example in Prey Veng province? As long as the government runs Cambodia as their own private company there will be very little economic development for the average Cambodian like the rice farmers. Hun Senh only works for him self and his rich and powerful friends. He don't give a damn about the Cambodian people except strangely enough before elections.

We agree with your article. You have shown very clear about the situation in Cambodian up to date. You article is showing the world, that Hun Sen has NOT been a really good leader since he was not elected by the Cambodian people and was installed illegally by the Vietnamese leaders (who are Hun Sen's Vietnamese bosses). Yes, Hun Sen have hired as many Vietnamese advisers as 500 (or more). Unfortunately, only a few Cambodian/Khmer advisers who are understaffed and not well treated in the Administration Offices of CPP in Phnom Penh.
Many Cambodian people have no power or no freedoms to accesses to health care, government assistance, educations, and so on. There are so many illegal Vietnamese businessmen and exploiters who have been sneaking around across the country of Cambodia, causing the major destruction and corruptions in the country. You can not imagine that Cambodian country in such a developed country, but she has been misled by the CPP regime led by Hun Sen and his Vietnamese inner circles. Hun Sen has lied a lot about the Vietnamese leaders and forces to help him and Cambodia to be independent, but Cambodian is still under the control of Vietnam. You may have seen the speeches of Hun Sen during ASEAN Summit in 2012, that Hun Sen rambled about his opposition parties, especially Mr. Sam Rainsy who was the winner of elections in Cambodia and Prince Ranarith was a winner of Election.
You may have seen the Hun Sen has used the Vietnamese forces to oust to opposition leaders (Mr. Sam Rainsy and Prince Ranarith). So, you can see the Vietnamese forces and leaders from Hanoi who have controlled Hun Sen until the present time. Hun Sen has been ordered by his Vietnamese bosses in Hanoi to give the speech to the public and the world stage as it was told to do so.
Hun Sen needs to go and he has embarrassed the world leaders and international communities and donors who have poured billions of dollars and aids to Cambodia for more three decades. Those aids and billions of dollars have been stolen by his Vietnamese advisers, Vietnamese inner circles, and Vietnamese businessmen in CPP systems. Those Vietnamese folks of Hun Sen in CPP regime have been occupying and operating Cambodia in the wrong during by doing the businesses with Westerners and Eastern (China, Vietnam, Laos, etc). They are as the most corrupted as the corrupted Vietnamese leaders in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.
Those billions of dollars and aids from the International donors have not reached to the poor Cambodian people who are desperately in need. You can seen many misplaced poor Cambodian people all over the places with no home and place to stay.

It is very misleading to say that Cambodian capital Phnom Penh has highest volume of Lexus or luxury cars per capita just by looking in a small crowed and congested environment.
Tell me how big is Phnom Penh? Phnom Penh is about the size of my palm comparing to Bangcock that over 30 years of peace and stability to develop! It takes me less than 30 minutes to discover the whole Phnom Penh if the fucken traffic move without stopping every few hundred feet and the city is so crowded with houses with small streets due to the lack of city planning over the years! So it is natural for one to look in a small crowed place and only find certain thing if they choose to see what they want to see!
The dirty secret of about these luxury cars is that most of it is junk! The Cambodian auto body shops assemble many of these luxury cars from total loss collision!
