German production house Film Base Berlin is developing a Cambodia-themed drama Game Park, to be directed by French-Cambodian filmmaker Vanessa Ly.
Film Base’s Mathias Schwerbrock is aiming to set the film up as a co-production with France. It will be mostly filmed in France, with a few days of location shooting in Asia.
Scripted by Ly and Beirut-based French writer Charlotte Gachon, it revolves around three generations of a French-Cambodian family living in Grenoble, which is haunted by the genocide which took place in Cambodia during the Pol Pot regime in the 1970s.
“It’s a drama with thriller elements,” said Schwerbrock. “The 17-year-old son spends all his time in front of a video game, but then he starts to ask questions when he sees parallels between the game and his family’s past.”
Ly, who has been based in New York since 1997, has has previously directed a couple of well-received shorts – Mekong Interior, which won best short at the 2004 Bangkok film festival, and High Winds, which screened at Edinburgh and Slamdance.
Film Base, which is focused on international co-productions, co-produced Don 2 with India’s Excel Entertainment and recently provided production services for Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan’s In Berlin when it filmed in the German capital.
The busy company’s co-productions also include The Two Women, an adaptation of Ivan Turgenev’s play starring Ralph Fiennes, with Russia’s Horosho Production; Paul Black’s The Same Eyes with Patrick Cassavetti, and Aleksei Uchitel’s The Stockholm Syndrome with Uchitel’s Rock Films.
