Buddhism and the Party Line in Cambodia

Monastic life taking an uneasy ride in modern Cambodian society. Note the allegory embedded in this scene: the vehicle represents the Nation in motion; the clergy perching precariously behind on the passenger seat designed for 1 person; the driver [political leadership] hands off the handles, eyes shut [possible half-blind - no pun intended!] quite possibly falling asleep. However, the passengers appear content to be "taken for the ride" being unable to tell if the driver is doing what he is meant to be doing. It is any body's guess how the national journey will end! - School of Vice

Why Cambodian Buddhism is in decline

An interview with a disillusioned monk.

by Prah Sokha with Antonio Graceffo - June 18, 2008

Prah Sokha has been a Khmer monk, off and on, for more than ten years. He once left the monkhood because he felt the Cambodian monks had strayed from a pure form of Buddhism, in order to follow the mandates of the Cambodian government (CPP).

He feels that the influences of politics, greed and the modern world have perverted the religion. He complains about the lack of discipline among the monks and stringent government controls on the temples’ teachings. Finally, he fears that as the people move further and further away from Buddhist values, the social order of the country could collapse. He sees the monks as being the only ones who could save the people, bringing them back to their core beliefs. But he asks the question, how can corrupt monks be expected to save the Cambodian people?

According to Prah Sokha:

Theravada Buddhism has played an important role in Khmer society for centuries. Khmer people decided to adhere to Buddhism since it was a religion that required the followers to observe strict principles and follow rigid precepts. They paid the highest respect to the people who became Buddhist monks.

Historically, Khmer people have taken the monastery as their refuge, as well as their training centre, where they could develop both their mind and their spirit. Buddhism is one of the strongest influences on Khmer culture and tradition.

In the past, monks fulfilled essential roles in traditional Khmer society, such as teachers and healers. In ancient times, they were the practitioners whose role was closest to that of modern psychiatrists. The monks provided kindly counselling and encouragement to the laity. They helped develop the country, resolving problems that occurred in Khmer society and interceding between the government and the people. A god example is Prah Samdach Song Chhuan Nat, who was the top hierarchical monk and an advisor to King Sihanouk during the 1950s and 1960s.

The Present: Cambodian Buddhism is in Decline

After the Khmer Rouge regime was finished, Buddhism was reborn, and started developing from day to day. But the development came only from outside forms of Buddhism. The new influences focused only on the constructions. They didn’t know what the core of Buddhismwas. The roles played by the Khmer Buddhist monks in Khmer society were greatly decreased. The Grand Patriarch, the ranking Buddhist monk, who has traditionally been an advisor to the king, lost most if not all of his influence and power. The monks themselves lost their focus and became selfish. They don’t dare to share what they have in order to helpBuddhism.

Why Khmer Buddhism is in decline:

Practitioners, Buddhist Monks, novices and laity, are not strict in Vinaya, monastic discipline. They are only attracted to modern materialism such as motorcycles, cars, phones, televisions, and electronic entertainment. They concentrate on earning money in anyway way possible, even engaging in illegal or immoral behavior. They are crazy with money at the moment. They don’t spend money in the right way.

“Some monks in PP are gambling; betting on football matches. CamboSix centers have opened nationwide, allowing laity and monks to gamble on football matches around the world.” says Phra Nhean, living in Thailand 8 years.

The monks suffer from a limited belief system, because they don’t study and find out the deep core of Buddhism. So, they are reluctant to commit to the discipline of the religion. Monks don’t have enough knowledge to explain Buddha’s teaching to the laity.

The Monk Educational System in Cambodia is not up to standard, and the qualifications are not accepted by any university. Even if you complete your monk education, you must study again from beginning. I, Prah Sokha, was also forced to do this. I completed secondary school, then I became a monk and studied the same grade again. It takes us a long time to complete our studies because we have to do everything twice.

Recently, a monk decree was issued, stating that monks who have completed their studies in a foreign country will not be allowed to work in the government or monk hierarchy. I don’t understand why they are so crazy.

“They don’t want us to grab their power,” says Phra Minh, a Khmer monk who recently went to Thailand for education. “They are afraid because they are ignorant, unlearned, and belligerent.”

Some monks who need power, try to have a secrete relationship with government officers of the CPP. The monks bow their heads down to the government and flatter them. Some even dare to kneel down to receive money from Hun Sen. Some agree to work as servants. This is all wrong for Buddhist monks!

Outside Threats to Khmer Buddhism

Other religions, Islam, and Christianity, are penetrating into Cambodia every day. They are trying to use money to buy the people to practice their religions by offering gifts or cash to the poor and then force them, behind the scenes covert. Buddhist monks have not shown any interest in this situation.

I think if All of Cambodian monks are still sleeping in ignorance don’t look at the neighbouring countries, don’t upgrade their thought or idea, Buddhism will possibly vanish or disappear in the nearest future. And there will be a religious war in Cambodia, no longer, no sooner.

Bhuddism has already lost its true meaning and purposes in Cambodia.

In comparison it is like a three-day left-over food that you don't want to throw away, but don't even touch once on the 3rd day!

An action reflects the purpose of an existence and this purpose of existence creates the existence which is nourished by the motive that drives the action. If this motive has gone astray off its normal path, then the existence shall have no more reason to stay around and be built upon.

Before Buddhism what religion the Khmers adopted?

Buddhism has been gradually declined not only in foreign countries such as in Cambodia, but in Buddha's own country as well.

Nepali turned to adopt Mao's doctrine, and in India, Buddhism declines by the Indians.

"5) As Goyal [394] notes, “According to many scholars hostility of the Brahmanas was one of the major causes of the decline of Buddhism in India.”

From How Adi Shankara destroyed Buddhism in the 8th century - Hinduism ...

People should have right to believe whatever they believe is right for them. Don't force them to stuck onlyone religion. In case of point, if Buddhist offers no help to solution for current problem i will stay away from Buddhism. If more monks act like Ven. Luon Sovath, i'm sure there will be more khmer believe in Buddhism otherwise why be a Buddhist just for egoism?

Before Buddhism Khmers were Hindu. The country was built by the rich Indian traders. Khmer-Mon were Indian origin (proved by Scientists through DNA).

After the Khmers went to too many wars, Jayavaraman VII, a usurper from Java (Indonesia) became King, and he adopted Buddhism after he himself went to many wars among the Khmers and with the Cham. In his absolute reign/rule Khmers have a large land, but Jayavaraman VII failed to build a strong defense to protect Khmer empire. Khmer empire was built.

Some skeptics said Jayavaraman VII adopted Buddhism because he had feared of Kublai Khan. Jayavaraman VII should had feared of Annamese who were well prepared to expand their land after they freed from Chinese.

Varaman Kings were the main looser. Because they had all chances to build a strong army while they were rich, but they did not do it. Instead they built to many monuments for themselves, their families, and their thousand concubines.

Khmer empire started to decline since after his death until today. Monks or no monks they are corrupted and becoming evils.

And for this same reason we don’t see any of Jayavaraman VII’s statues in whole, all of them were decapitated by the angry population after his death.

When Ah Hun Sen’s turn comes it will be worse.
He tries to built his legacy by putting his name on many places: schools, bridges, roads…they will be completely erased after he falls off from power or death…

A strong Nation must have a strong army. Without the strong army to defend the nation, it will fail and disappear. Hun Sen is a puppet, he has nothing but a puppet. Whatever Hun Sen does, he remains a puppet.

What Hun Sen does by having his names and his ugly images everywhere, he was instructed by the Vietnamese invaders to do so, because Past Khmer leaders did that, because Vietnamese want to fool every Khmer that Hun Sen is a real power's holder.

Jayavaraman 7 was a Javanese who claimed to have blood of Kambuja, he came while Khmers were fighting each others for the throne, he had an army from Java and some in Khmer empire and so he climb on the throne.

Skeptics think that Khmer Varaman Kings were the roots of the empire declined. They did not prepare for the future generation.

They built too many monuments and temples but no wall (border) like China did. Most of their monuments were for their families and their women for pleasure. The empire they created was having no oppositions like conquering other land by force, they just happened to find the trading region with no government. That was the reason the newcomers like Thais and Vietnamese knew their weakness.

I have not found a strong defense army of the Khmer empire History that interesting me. All I read about were hundred -thousand of the monuments/ temples they enjoyed to build scattering all over South East Asia.

I read how the newcomers like Thais used their strategy to buy corrupted Khmers and they later sacked Angkor.

I read how Vietnamese defeated a whole China's army in Red river; and how they destroyed Kublai Khan's fleets.

No body ever manged to harm Kublai Khan's fleets. It was destroyed by a storm which the Japanese describe as a Divine Wind. In Japanese word as Kamikaze which they given this name to their suicide pilots during World War II.

But don't take my advice because it is really dumb a one.

Agree!!
Youn King named Than Tong paid tribute to Mongol Khan to spare his country in 1257.
Khmer King paid his tribute in 1285.
Cham King paid his tribute in 1278.
Thai King pais his tribute after seeing Kublai Khan protected his vassal Burma.

Almost all nations on the planet paid their tribute to Mongol Khan.

God must have saved Japan for reasons.

buddhism is one influences for people, but remember also that it's not the only one on earth, you know. buddhist teaches people to be enlightened and not losing focus in life and for people to be compassionate and tolerant, etc. that's why people in some part of the world chose to worship buddhism. the same can be said about other religions as well, you know. so please do not judge when it comes to religions. the best thing for all of us humans to do is be compassionate and tolerant toward differences and help mankind and humanity by making a real, lasting difference for all, really.

There is nothing wrong with that. That's what the temple for, it's to help a hopeless person get get on his feet while learning how to be a monk for short or long term.

Religion started out as a relationship between man and his Creator before it became a religion.

.Religion is man attempting to reach God. Whatever belief that may be
.Relationship is God, the Creator, reaching down to man. In this frame of belief, the how to have a relationship with God is made known by God to his created being, man.

Be it known, I think all religions has it roots to Biblical account. There was only ONE true faith started out in the beginning of time. God only sowed good seed (one truth), but an enemy came and sowed bad seed to produce many religions.

Jesus of the bible uses an example of a good man sowed his field with good seed only, so he thought. But when when the wheat begans to mature he noticed there's tares among his wheat. The servant asked, "how did the tares gotton into the field?" The master answered, "an enemy came during the night and sowed bad seed among the wheat." The servant responded, "should I go pull out the tares to rid of them?" The master answered, "No, wait until harvest time, lest we also pull the wheat out with the tares which would ruin the wheat crop."

So what will happen at harvest time? Both will be harvested, the good seed will be kept but the tares will be cast into fire to be burn up.

Harvest time is coming when all false beliefs will be burnt up.
