PHNOM PENH (Jiji Press)--Crown Prince Naruhito laid flowers Wednesday at a memorial in Phnom Penh to a Japanese police officer who was killed in 1993 during U.N. peacekeeping operations in the Southeast Asian country.
After putting his hands together in front of the memorial, the crown prince was briefed by Ambassador to Cambodia Masafumi Kuroki about the fallen officer, Haruyuki Takata.
Takata was transferred to the National Police Agency from the Okayama prefectural police and joined the U.N. Transitional Authority in Cambodia.
He was dispatched to Cambodia as a civilian police officer but was shot to death by an armed group in May 1993.
Later Wednesday, the crown prince was scheduled to visit a memorial to Atsuhito Nakata, a U.N. volunteer who was killed in Cambodia in April 1993.
After visiting Thailand, the crown prince will return to Phnom Penh on the second leg of his weeklong Southeast Asian tour, which will also take him to Laos.
