“He’s worried about democratic forces combining together to compete one and one with CPP, so we will see success in the 2013 election”
In his first public statements since the Cambodian People’s Party dominated the field in Sunday’s commune elections, Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday dismissed the threat that a proposed merger between the two largest opposition parties in the country could pose.
The Sam Rainsy Party and the Human Rights Party said this week that they had plans on meeting in the Philippines to discuss a possible combination of forces ahead of next year’s national elections.
The meeting was delayed yesterday because of scheduling difficulties, an HRP spokesman said. He did not provide a future date.
Hun Sen said that the two groups, which he never mentioned by name, referring to them as the “second” and “third” party, needed millions of votes to compete with the CPP.
He said “the second party,” which is likely the SRP, needed 2.4 million votes.
“Can they find it?” he asked.
In the commune elections, the SRP picked up about 20 per cent of the vote, while newcomer HRP earned just shy of 10 per cent.
They finished in second and third place to the CPP, which took home more than 60 per cent.
Hun Sen was speaking at the opening of a road construction project that will stretch from Banteay Meanchey’s Sisophon district to Oddar Meanchey’s Samrong district.
He referred to the Human Rights Party as “too proud” of its finish in the elections.
Kem Sokha, president of the HRP, said yesterday Hun Sen was right to say his party is proud, because they earned votes without buying them.
“Success without honour is the worst,” Kem Sokha said.
The prime minister also pointed out that the unofficial election results showed that the CPP had increased its vote tally from the 2007 commune elections.
“I want to say that this is not a small thing of the CPP if we talk about increasing numbers. This time, we got 61.93 per cent, but there was 60.82 per cent in 2007. So it increased 290 seats over the country,” Hun Sen said.
The premier rejected opposition party accusations that the election had proceeded without justice, freedom and transparency.
SRP spokesman Yim Sovann said Hun Sen’s words made him “happy” and showed that the ruling party was afraid of the competition.
“He’s worried about democratic forces combining together to compete one and one with CPP, so we will see success in the 2013 election,” he said.
Sok Touch, an independent political analyst, called the merger a positive development in Cambodian politics.
“Having fewer political parties makes it easier for people to select which party platform is good for them, and they can choose,” he said.
“If there are more parties, it makes politicians more careless with people, because more votes are going to only one big party because it has built a concrete base.”

If those 2 parties could merge, it will be good for Cambodia.
My own opinion, the HRP should not have created because it has the same policy as the SRP.
However, we need to try to solve the prsesent problem: combine the 2parties to last indefinitely.
Here is my suggestion:
Try to antiocipate any possible problems that Vietnam and CPP (C Porng Party) will throw to you.
Try to list all of them. Yhis way, both parties will not surprise when the CPP and Vietnam bring the problem to your face.
Act maturely by sincerely tell each other about the CPP new tricks and maneuverings.
Always try to mitigate any problems that come up.

You are talking to yourself asshole!!!
CPP spent lots of money for the commune election , yet the turn up was only
51% of the registered voters . This means that 49% became independent and
they will be up for grab , if the two parties merge and know how to approach
them and persuade them . Then CPP will have to use more money and resource
to compete with the stronger merged party . CPP have to be worried & Hun Sen
was bluffing when saying that he was not . SRP & HRP must hold grudges and
stay united at least until 2013 election be over ; otherwise more people will loose
Interest in voting . All the democratic parties must learn from US election :
any candidate who has less supporters must endorse the one with stronger voices
and send only one candidate to compete against to ruling party . Remember !
SAMDECH Hun Sen declared that he will walk out, if CPP supporters is less
than 60% .. Then the opposition party don't have to win the election to get rid of
Hun Sen ( if he will keep his promise and it's easier than self behead )

Both of these parties can't win
over the CPP :
- 7 million Vietnamese vote for CPP
- Half Million Khmer people were
abroad.
- 50% of Khmer people in Cambodia
won't vote to any parties.
- Hun Sen buy the voters.
It is hard to win over ah Hun Sen.
How to win over the CPP or ah Hun Sen?
-Change COMFREL members.
-Khmer overseas 2 and half million
help to protest and donate few bucks or as much as they can to these two parties(SRP and HRP).
-stick with Khmer in town and in
the countryside.
-donate money and foods to the poor
people.So CPP can do so can these
two Parties.
The Israeli people abroad can do,Khmer abroad can do too.
Fast all CPP know and hate corruption but their family are in CPP, when get off they will lose all: position, Title, business and so on. Please look to the election 1993.
When the 2 nationalist parties (SRP & HRP)unite, then all Khmer nationalist in CPP will turn their head, because in HRP MR Penn Sovann is in and we Pen Sovann (living 32 Years in Vietnam) but in 1981 he against Viet. If Mr Pen Sovann love power like Hun Xen, he had best position than Hun Xen 100 times more. But all Khmer must why he turn against Viet? Please read to our old history!

Why Worried if you are a true Khmer patriot, you should be happy, it is a very good way and wise way and safe way to exit Cambodian politics into retirement. It's a much better way than former Lybian Leader's exit.

well, it's a test of time, if these two oppositon parties can't get along, it goes to show how incompetent they are, thus they are not fit to lead cambodia, given they can't even work things out among themselves, you know. imagine if they were allowed to lead cambodia. it would be utra chaos like going back to the stupid, primitive KR system again. you can tell by their members' thinking, so outdated and ignorant and unethical or unprofessional, to say the least, really. i wouldn't vote for them if they pay me, really. cambodia do not want incompetent people to be our leader, you know. we only want smart, educated, enlightened, reformed minded people with lots of life experiences, etc to lead cambodia, not the incompetent type, ok! hey, this is not the dark ages era, you know; there are more to cambodia than you and i, really. god bless my country cambodia always.

With SRP and HRP merged and an Independent Free and Fair Election Committee in place, the CPP regime will be done.
