A traffic policeman (R), seen leaning over to smell the breath of a motorcyclist to determine the level of his alcohol consumption

Drink-drivers in Nepal face the 'smell test' crackdown

By Deepak Adhikari | AFP – 07/22/2012

The policeman leaned in, detected a faint whiff of alcohol on motorcyclist Ram Thapa's breath and declared he had failed the "smell test" under a strict new drink-driving crackdown in Nepal.

The 27-year-old is among thousands of road users falling foul of a "zero-tolerance" policy introduced in the capital Kathmandu, with police relying on just their noses to decide whether an offence has been committed.
