A union employee representing striking workers from a factory that supplies Levi’s and Gap was left a bloodied mess near Wat Botum yesterday after police allegedly attacked him.
According to rights groups, police set upon Long Panha, of the Cambodian Alliance of Trade Unions (CATU), who was among a group of 20 unionists who had marched from a protest in Freedom Park to deliver a petition to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
A video posted on YouTube yesterday shows police armed with sticks and shields forcing Panha to the ground before carrying him by his hands and feet to a police truck while blood dripped from his face.
Licadho director Naly Pilorge was one of many NGO officials to condemn the incident.
“All eyes are on Cambodia right now as it hosts this important international summit [ASEAN],” she said. “Yet a unionist is beaten bloody on the street during a peaceful gathering – a unionist who is working to improve conditions for workers who supply some of the world’s largest clothing manufacturers.”
Workers from Tai Yang Enterprises first went on strike in May to defend their seniority pay, then again on June 25, to demand accommodation, performance and maternal bonuses.
Over 100 met in Freedom Park yesterday to continue the strike.
Cambodian Confederation of Unions president Rong Chhun said he too had been hurt during the clash while marching to the prime minister’s Cabinet.
Dave Welsh, country director of the American Center for International Labor Solidarity, urged a quick resolution for workers.
“You can’t avoid your collective bargaining rights simply by changing your name and re-incorporating,” he said.
Tai Yang official Ou Menghour declined to comment yesterday, but has previously said the factory did not change its name.
Phnom Penh police chief Touch Naroth declined to comment.

I sympathize with the protesters situation. You have the rights to have a free speach. However, I disagreed how these Cambodian civilians acting in a bad way. Protesters don't have the rights to curse at the police and called them with bad name, and threw rocks at them.
Once again you have the right to a peacefully assembly (meeting) but you don't have the rights for consparacy to hurt someone.
So is the Occupy LA. When you threw rocks at the police, don't mind they put pressure back on you.
You don't step into the eligators lake and then complained why the eligator bit you.
One Eye King and the King of Cambodia are incompetent. They do not know how to handle problem.
When I reviewed the video U tube, I believe strongly that Cambodian people were at fault. The reason were that the people threw rocks and object at the police. They cursed at the police and disrespected them.
Don't tell me that is freedom of the speach. Base on this I believe the police officers and the military were justified to use force reasonable and necessary. It calls rule of engagement.
Yes Iam a Cambodian decent. I love Cambodian but it does not justifify why you can't protest peacefully; therefore, the protesters do not have any sympathy with me. Learn how to grow food youself. stop demanding and ask for handout. tx

There are reasons why these protesters are angry. The incompetent government allowing wide spread corruption causing the price of every thing to go up, so don't blame people for being angry. These people wages should increase accordingly.

I have received minimum wage in America for so long and I only got a raise for 25 cent an hour after so many years later. Inflation was 3 to 4 percents going up every year for food. Education and medical 's inflation 12 to 15 percents a year. So that is the President Obama at fault? No. Is that a corruption? No.
I put myself through school and working so many long hours. Finally I got a college degree. I can't even get a job in my major. However, the college degree did help me get a job some place else paying almost $47 dollars a hours after so many years later.
On top of that I grew fruits to eat and save alot of money. I did not blame some one else. In America calls "competition."
I have been working over 20 years plus. It was not easy, but I did not blamed some one else again.
I can tell you more hardship story that I alsmost lost my life many times under the Cambodian Xihanook communism. The point I am saying is "life is not easy" but we all can do it.
Can you imagine if all these business owners decided to move all their business in Burma and Bagladesh?
That $60.00 a month is alot when you don't have money.
Ir I were these people I would join together create a new business partnership so you can charge more money. So you don't have to depend on foreigners like chinese.

you too are a thief who is good at stealing from the poor and you can say whatever you want to say. it is not simple as you say in life. it is full of bureaucracy and non sense out there. it is like if you have, they'd robbed from you and if don't have they blame you. so, people are not stupid like you think they are. what they need is, the rule of law to protect them so that they can breathe freely and also to work within a proper system, to have some sorts of security for livelihood.
