Clinton takes swipe at China aid to Cambodia

The United States is committed to helping ordinary Cambodians rather than funding vanity projects, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday, in a subtle dig at China-backed schemes in the country

AFP – July, 12 ,2012

The United States is committed to helping ordinary Cambodians rather than funding vanity projects, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday, in a subtle dig at China-backed schemes in the country.

"The United States remains strongly committed to working with and supporting Cambodian people," Clinton told reporters after attending a regional security forum in the capital Phnom Penh.

"Sometimes it is a little frustrating, I will admit, for the United States because we channel our aid in so far as possible to the people themselves," she said.

"So we cannot point to a big building we have built. But we can point to more children being alive, more people surviving HIV/Aids, more women surviving child birth."

Clinton was giving the press conference next door to the imposing Council of Ministers building, where the region's media has been stationed for this week's Asian security talks, and which was paid for by China.

China has poured billions of dollars in loans and investment into close ally Cambodia in recent years, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen regularly praises Beijing's "no-strings-attached" aid.

That is the strong message to Hun Sen regime. Cambodian land belong to all Khmers who was born in this country, not only your apparate, doing secretly with your boss Viet. As soon as your boss will tell you or take you from office because Vietnam need new weapons fron USA to pretect the sourth China sea. That is foreign policy.

Most of the money from Chink & Yuon are going to Hun Sen's pocket and land-grabbing & big building projects that resulted ordinary Khmers going homeless and treated like unwanted beggars who could never in their life time set foot in any of those places again.

cambodia would like america to teach us how to fish, not giving the fish to us. we want america's good legacy or permanent imprint in camobdia's development, education, training, etc, not just spoiled and corrupted us by giving, not teaching and guiding and making educating us. you know, cambodia love america and wanted to embrace america as well. please help to make a real, lasting difference in my country cambodia because there are more to cambodia than you and i, etc, really. please encourage and help cambodia to reform our gov't system if not similar to america, at least in the similar direction as america. cambodia like america education system, and economic system, etc. we want cambodia to be different from its past tragic history because when america teach and train cambodian people to think and know that it is ok to think outside of the box. cambodia want to embrace everything and everyone that is good, really. we want judicial reforms, exchange of students, share of knowledge, training by america experts, etc, etc... yes, there are more to camobdia than some extreme oppositon group of politicians, you know. cambodia need nurturing and tenderly love from america. cambodia want to be a country that is different from its past recent tradegy because we want to move on with life and develop our country so all can enjoy better living, working and doing business environment like like singapore, s. korea, etc... cambodia want to develop our economy, our infrastructure like expanding our international airports, seaport, riverport, highways, ecotourism, improve our agricultural production, raise our people and country's standard of living, have more choices, etc, etc, you name it that cambodia lacks, we want it, all the good things, really. thank you and god bless my country cambodia and all our beautiful khmer people and citizens.

yes, please teach us how to fish, not giving the fish to us because once we ate the fish, we have nothing else left to eat. but when you teach us to fish, we can fish more for ourselves, you see. it's a metaphor for saying that if you want to help make a real, lasting difference, you teach and train us, not spoiling us. we prefer education and training from america, than just temporary reprieve, you know. god bless america and cambodia, too.

It is in China best interests that Chinese leaders pay attention to what Hillary said when it comes to investing in Cambodia.

China continues to pour billions of dollars into Cambodia infrastructure and economy, hoping in return she would be able to influence Cambodia politics. So far, the Chinese approach is not working.

The majority people which are poor peasants have not visibly benefitted from Chinese investments and are not aware of the Chinese generosity. On the contrary, increasing numbers of poor people lose their lands/homes and live in greater hardship due to land eviction and concession to Chinese firms. In that sense, Hillary is right and Chinese leaders need to reconsider how they spend thier money in Cambodia which so far only visibly benefitted the few rich and powerful.

In terms of influencing Cambodia politics, China hasn't fared much better either. Cambodia politicians and political institutions are still heavily if not completely controlled by Vietnam, an arch-enemy of China. At their own choosing, Vietnam agents can replace the current Cambodian government with a new one which is anti-chinese and break Cambodian tie with China. How would China response to such possible event? It would be too late for China to undo it because it would be seen by the world as a Chinese aggression against Vietnam. Diplomatically, China would not have the world support to punish Vietnam as she did in 1979.

If China wants to preserve tie with Cambodia, and present in and influence Cambodia politics, she needs to capture the soul and heart of the mass, not just the few government officials, and the riches and powerful, because those few government officials, rich and powerful can easily and instantly be replaced by China arch-enemy, Vietnam.

How can America teach Hun Sen, if he's so ignorant, outdated and hard-head dictator. You're dreaming and helping dictator at the same time? There's no such thing from America. America only support democracy not communist leader like Hun Sen, get it?

What cambodian really need is revolution. Investment and aid will only support the current government to stay in power and continue the oppression on its people.

hillary is the only pure good american who really wants to help khmers but not others like kissinger or nixon etc, they were khmer killers. they need to compensate us not us owing them damn it. they destroyed our country and people and got away from it. but in the end the truth always comes out anyway. but i believe time will catch up with them really.

cambodia don't mind when it comes to humanitarian aid or assistance, really. it can come in all shapes and color, cambodia don't mind. some countries can help with other areas in different way, cambodia don't picky, you know. all we care is teach us how to fish, not just giving fish to us, really, because giving fish to us is only temporary relieve, but teaching us how to fish is preferred and is better for cambodia, really. and please help cambodia build and improve more modern infrastructures too like railway, airports expansion, bigger, strong, modern bridges to cross the mekong river and tonle sap river and lake, etc, etc... there type of assistance, we do welcome all the time, really. god bless my country cambodia.

Case study: When either a depressed and/or drunken person commit suicide, Do we need to save his/her life first or wait until s/he is able to understand his or her situation. LIKEWISE:

Helping/Feeding the poor and needy without improving quality of life, like giving people fish but don't teach them how to catch the fish.
Which one is better.

Five blind men who are allowed to touch only each part of an elephant and to describe what an elephant looks like.
Like rebuilding the country needs only feeding the poor and needy can improve quality life??

8:47 AM,

So, suddently American under Kissinger and Nixon just, without reason, dropped bomb in Cambodia? If you are a reasonable and just person you should tell people also as to why American did that. If you don't know go to ask your stupid king.
