Chairman of the Royal Academy of Cambodia Khlot Thida stressed the role of Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia in GMS co-operation.

DA NANG — Social scientists and researchers from Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam gathered yesterday at their first annual international conference which aimed at strengthening scientific co-operation between the three countries.

The conference, titled the role of Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) co-operation in the new context, discussed the importance of scientific co-operation between the neighbouring countries for future development.

"The link between nations in the GMS has played an important role in the dynamic development of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in recent years. Co-operation among GMS nations is necessary in social sciences, the economy, the environment and social security for durable peace, stability and prosperity in the region," director of the Viet Nam Academy of Social Sciences Nguyen Xuan Thang told the conference.

"We highly appreciate the co-operation of scientists from the three countries in sustainable development and sharing the benefits of natural resources, increasing investment and trade," he added.

Thang also stressed that scientists from neighbouring nations should look to protect cultural values and foster environmentally friendly development.

Vice chairman of the Laos Academy of Social Sciences Khamphay Latsamy said that co-operation between Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia was a valuable asset.

"We acknowledge the potential of relations and co-operation among the three countries, but more work needs to be done in the future. I hope there are more conferences to exchange information on culture, history, religion and economics," he said.

Chairman of the Royal Academy of Cambodia Khlot Thida stressed the role of Viet Nam, Laos and Cambodia in GMS co-operation.

"We should be cautious about the development of the Mekong River and the lives of those who live on its banks," Thida told the conference.

"The conference will help governments of the three countries map out suitable policies on the management of water resources and sustainable development of the Mekong River," he added.

The conference is scheduled to be held annually.
