THOUSANDS of Cambodians have visited a log that is believed to possess magical powers, local media report.

The 13-metre-long log was unearthed from the bottom of a pond in Pursat province, The Cambodia Daily newspaper said on Thursday.

The piece of wood has since been credited with healing powers and the ability to bring financial good fortune.

More than 3000 villagers have journeyed to the site, with some rubbing talcum powder on the wood in hope of seeing winning lottery numbers, the report said.

"I try to tell people that it is not magic, but they don't believe me. People just believe in it. I cannot stop them," the newspaper quoted Pouk Savuth, director of the provincial department of cults and religions, as saying.

In February, a 19th century ship's anchor in Phnom Penh also proved a popular after it was said to have healing properties.

i don't care about his belief either, but go study medical anthropology, they specialized in this kind of animism belief for the purpose of a brance of psychology called culture an mental illness. hey, in the scientific community this kind of belief of the world is interesting for the studies of mental health; it's for the spiritual well-being of the mind that scientists in this field were interested in learning and research. so, stop being ignorant and judge them like this, it sounds stupid to you only, but it's never about you anyway so it doesn't matter, really! these believes are local or regional, so don't worry, it's not going to be a national religion of cambodia, ok. it's a form of animism belief that probably dated back to the primitive world, you know. that's all. have an understanding is better than making judgment on them like this, i think.
