One dead, 5 injured in Cambodia shooting

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, July 19 (UPI) -- Police in Cambodia said a man grabbed a rifle from an officer near a shopping mall and went on a shooting spree, killing one woman and injuring five others.

The gunfire occurred near the Sovanna shopping mall in Chamkarmon district's Tumnub commune about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday local time, the Phnom Penh Post reported Thursday.

The man, who police identified as Su Vuthy, immediately shot dead one woman as he ran down the street, and then shot another woman who confronted him.

The 58-year-old woman's son, Kheang Sae, 33, and daughter, Ngoun Pisey, 24, were also shot when they ran to their mother's aid, the Post reported.

"Now my mum and my sister are both in serious condition [in hospital], and I'm so worried about their health," Sae said.

No details on the other injuries were reported.

Police said Vuthy, 33, who worked as a prison guard, then shot and killed himself.

"I don't know the reasons behind this crime, because he had taken one month off work, saying he needed the time off to solve a family problem," Commune police chief Mey Bunrin said.
