The path to our faith is not unique

Dear Readers,

An anonymous reader brought to our attention this "interesting" form of preaching (ទេសនា) Buddhism in Thailand. Unlike Buddhism in Cambodia, this form Thai religious preaching is apparently quite old and it includes both music (although very basic) and actual singing (at least it sounds like it). As the Romans used to say: "All roads lead to Rome", we thought this preaching may be enlightening to our Compatriots as there are many roads that lead to Buddha/God. Just because we follow one path, that does not mean that there are no other paths that lead us to our faith. Likewise, believing in Buddhism does not necessarily mean that other faith believers are wrong, therefore please be tolerant and respectful to others, just like you would others to be tolerant and respectful to your own faith.

Peace be with you, Shalom, As-Salamu Alaykum!

Socheata

PS: If you are tempted to criticize these Thai monks, remember Tum, the novice monk in Tumteav, was known for his singing of religious verse, if only we knew how his singing style was...

i don't know about rap monk. sounds like so copycat from american rap music. plus, always want to attract tourists attention by doing strange thing all the time. in cambodia, khmer people don't care about things like that to attract attention. i mean, it is ok for khmer to adapt, adopt and learn from the learn from the world as well as time changes, etc, but sometime, something we ought to learn from, sometime, it's not wise or smart to learn from, so, whatever good khmer will learn, but whatever is bad, of course, khmer will avoid altogether, really! this monk rap is not one that khmer want to copy, really. and for your information, tumteav story now belong in the literature textbook, because it 's too strict and old-fashioned and perhaps outdated for khmer society because it is good for khmer society to change with time as well as in adaptation, adoptation, etc. well, certain aspect of tumteav sing tum singing should be noted. i like it because it's an interesting khmer literature based on true story from the past generation of khmer world. but tumteav was about a strict parent forcing her only daughter with arranged marriage to rich and powerful and abusive leader because the mother (teav's mother) wanted her daughter's to be well off and marrying into a rich, wealthy, powerful family in those days, but teav already loved tum, but we felt reluctant because she did not want to disobey her mother. it was like the romeo and juliet story but a cambodia version, you know. i like gthe tumteav legend, but i don't want to like like tum and teav and her mother, though. for me, it's just for knowledge and understand of the past generation of cambodia, not about copying and following them in the same old-fashioned way, you know. for me, it is strictly for entertainment only, not for copycat, really. that time era and today's computer age era is too different to try to clinging on to the 16th century khmer way, it's sort of outdated and out of style, you know. nevertheless, it is very interesting about tumteav, the khmer romeo and juliet story based on true story of love, deception, greed, power, tragedy, traditon, culture, etc, etc, you name it, it's all in tumteav khmer literature, you know.

It is true that the path to our faith is not unique. However, Christianity and Buddhism are totally different from each other. While Buddhism accepts all religions and believes, Christianity excludes all. God said, “You shall not put any other gods before me.” And Jesus once said, “I am the only way…you could only go to the father through me…” If that is the case, it implies that there is only one way and one true religion. Anything besides that is a deviation from the true God and therefore a devil worshipers? On the other hand, Buddhism is about interconnectedness to all beings and all things – nothing separates from one another. Man is not unique or the center of all beings. In this belief, it is very similar to Charles Darwin’s theory of Evolution. With the help of modern technology, our DNA and the DNA of chimpanzee are about 98% the same. With the help of DNA, we can now trace our lineage from a complex species to a single cell ameba. In contrast, Christianity is about man being the center of the universe. God created man in his image (Adam) and he created Eve not out of necessity but just to keep Adam from boredom. In addition, most of the troubles around the world have to do with Christian missionary going to different part of the world to convert the heathen (the godless and uncivilized). My question is, how can one respect a culture and belief of another and at the same time trying to convert them? Let me conclude by saying this: Cambodia already has a religion. It might not be the best in the world but it already has one. And Khmer culture and tradition evolve around that belief. We have history that lasted for thousands of year. Therefore, we don’t need you to come and belittle us, walk over our heads and our ancestors’ head so you could force your belief down into our throat and destroy our culture. If you want to do a missionary work and destroy another people’s culture, go somewhere else. Go to the Philippines because they are Catholic and worship Mary more than God. Better yet, go preach the Muslim. You have a much better chance to convert them because they belief in the same God. The only different is because they see Jesus as a last prophet and not the son of God. Please leave Cambodia alone.

I am a christian I pray and praise God with Hymns (songs) but I never acted like those monks. If someone does like that in the church we would consider that he is not a true christian.
There are two kinds of worship songs; one type for worship God Jesus, the other for worship the Devil (satan).
Songs of praise normally is slow, smooth not very loud they used to be known as angels' songs.
We can use Phleng Pin Peat to worship God.
We can not use Phleng Ah Reak.

i think all religion is god's way of teaching humans. all religions have the same goal: worshiping god. buddhist religion is more strict and more disciplined based on magical beliefs, etc; whereas christianity is more based on straigh-forward, humanly possible way and is less strict and less believing using magic and other idol statues, etc. of course, every religion in the world is different, but the goal of every religion is the same: to honor and worship god, and there's one god only. and of course have a lot of impact of culture, tradition, thinking, believing, etc. no human is allowed to make judgment on any religion, we can compare religions, but we cannot judge religion, you know. for me, i just prefer religion that is less strict and less taboo, etc, you know.

and for the siem rap monk, he just want attention from the tourists so he can be on america tv program, that's all. and for me, i don't really give a rat's ass about this siem rap monk, you know. to me, it's just trying to get attention, that's all, ok!

Pointing one finger at them (Thai Buddhist Monks) there're 4 fingers are pointing at yourself.
Your Cambodians are too evils as hell.

To say Buddha is GOD is another blaspheme against the Eternal GOD, while Buddha was just a rich Nepali prince and sought his way to eternal life in heaven. Is he really in heaven?

Let's pray and ask for a guidance to see where is Buddha now.

If our houses have doors and keys, then both Heaven and Hell also have doors and keys, and somebody must have hold the keys to those doors to let us in.

The Hindu is the first belief in
India. The first era AD,Khmer adapted this religion.

Jayavarman vII adapted Buddhism.
These two religions were from India.
TheChams (Champa, now became Vietnam land)believed in Muslim.

The Europeans brought Christianity to Cambodia.

All these four beliefs are not
Khmer beliefs.They are foreign
beliefs.
What are Khmer beliefs?
Khmer people believe the spirits
of the planet earth,the sea,the mountains,the sun,the forests,(natures),their ancestors,and even
the stars.

The four religions:Hindu(1billion believers),Buddha(half billion believers), Christianity(2.5billion
believers)and Mohammad or Allah
1.6 billion Muslims.

The UN celebrated Buddha birthday
every single year.Buddhism is a
peaceful religion on the planet earth.Buddha is a human being, but not GOD.

I can’t believe these monks singing, Monk not suppose to be signing, monk should stay at the temple (wat) for mediation. This is totally a joke and absolutely ridiculous. When I visited Thailand two years ago, when I was waiting for the furry board in Bangkok, I met a Thai monk who made up face, he drawn eye line on his eyes, Oh God! I couldn’t believe the young Thai Monk did this, oh God I was shock when see a Thai monk made up his face. I never seen this before and now monks are singing the song. My God!. Thailand full of Gay and Lessbain.

for your information, all primitive, indigenous society believe in nature like you described above is called animism belief. it doesn't mean they are wrong or right, it just how they belief, really. and all the other beliefs you labeled as foreign brought into cambodia, it doesn't matter because it's called adapt, adopt and learn from the world, ok. that is how the whole world evolves by borrowing, adapting, adopting, learning, etc from others. we called that sharing, ok. nothing wrong with sharing our beliefs, etc, really. most khmer are buddhist, however there are some khmer who believe in animism, some even atheist, some adopt christian, some adopt muslim, some adopt hinduism, etc, etc, really. that doesn't make them wrong in their belief, you know. we all just have to learn to tolerate other who happened to believe differently from us, that's all, really! one thing though, i don't like primitive believe because it too outdated and too stone age since the world is advancing and progressing in technology, development, etc already, you know. other than that, i'm all for tolerance in belief, especially if it's a personal belief only, not infringing or forced onto someone else's, that's all. i think everyone people do have to adapt or adjust to time and place, really.

Satan is a LIAR from the Beginning: Is there only one WAY to God or Paradise?
Satan would say, Yes! But Yeshua/Jesus would say, NO!
Hell is associated with Satan
Heaven is associated with Yeshua

---Las Vegas---

Leave Cambodia alone? Cambodia went to Pot once and it will go to Pot once more if Cambodia is leave alone. Serpent/Naga are all associated with the Devil, if I see correctly I see devils all over the landscape of Khmerland.

A nation who reject truth will have only lie for its pillars to lean on! Muslim God is not the same as the God of the Bible. I judge the religion of Islam to be dammable religion.

Your data is wrong.
Christianity has 2.6 billion and keeps rising in Asia especially in China and India.
Buddhism has about 400 million not half billion, and among them they have million of fake Buddhists in Cambodia.

Buddha's own country Nepal declared a Hindu State. The Nepali don't even pay attention to Buddha at all, only foreigners who adopted Buddhism pay attention some.

jayavaraman vii was a Javanese origin from Java, a usurper who took Khmer throne by force while in civil war. His real name was unknown. He adopted Buddhism and forced Khmers to adopt also, may be Buddhism was to help Khmers to calm and not to rise against his authority. He may had created a good government inside while he was alive, but he failed to build a strong national defense.

I think Buddhism made people lazy and weak. The empire was declined since Buddhism entered. It is about 800 years (12th century).

No we don't worship Blessed Mother Mary, we respect Her. She was chosen by GOD to carry Him when He incarnated as human. God came to earth in flesh and He shared a blood through Mary uterus for 9 months. She's a Blessed Virgin Mary. She was GOD's instrument or a messenger of GOD or a tool in God's hand. We pray GOD and we also ask for Her prayers.

I pray to GOD and I also pray and ask Blessed Mother to pray for me and my family. In facts I pray to all the angels and all the Saints to help pray for me when I am very sick. I believe in prayers.
