WASHINGTON DC - Because public management in Cambodia is still week, venerable monk Hoeurn Somnieng, is pursuing a graduate degree at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
He told VOA Khmer on Monday that Cambodia’s Buddhism in particular lacks leadership and management from the monastery to the national level. Hoeurn Somnieng said everyone needs to carefully utilize their knowledge so that it benefits the nation as a whole.
If we serve individuals, it benefits individuals, but if we use our knowledge to serve the nation, it benefits the nation,” he said.
Hoeurn Somnieng is the founder of the Life and Hope Association and chairs a number of NGO networks based in Siem Reap province. He hopes to use the skills he takes from the Kennedy School to restructure the management of Cambodian Buddhism.
“I believe that I can help contribute to strengthening our Buddhist sector, if not for the whole country, at least the ones I am responsible for,” he said. “I cannot say I am able to reform Cambodia’s public sector, but I can say I will try to help strengthen our national institutions. I can see that the government has been trying to reform the public sector, but it is questionable whether it is effective.”
Hoeurn Somnieng said strengthening Cambodia’s Buddhist sector will require a high level of capacity and genuine systematic reform. It has to start from leadership at the monasterial level. People are influenced by their social environment, he said, wherein the rule of law and the effectiveness of law enforcement have to be taken into account.

Congratulation Bhikkhu Hoeurn for your achievement. It is always good to know that your heart is to save those who is less fortunate in our homeland. Thank you for your good intention and unlike most monks that came to the US from Cambodian recently only follows the CPP guide line working for Hanoi administration.

This is call reaching the enlargement by some one else control our destiny, but if you listen to this buddah's said "We are master of our destiny and no one else." you never reach your goal.
buddah is a no brainer - If all are the master of their own destiny, all will never have a parent and each one must be come out from black hole some where? Simple as that, but this guy have a parent just like every body else.
If "we are master of our destiny and no one else" Simple as this - you don't need to go to school to get educate from some one else - educate yourself.
Now, since you are an educate person, get out of this no brainer and serve your country straight up. Don't let your educate going back to no brainer.

"The ultimate goal of Buddhism is to attain the state of nothingness or the state of no rebirth and no death called nirvana..."

=venerable monk Hoeurn Somnieng seems to be genuinely happy about his achievement in his education and new found knowledge and I think this is kind of odd for a Buddhist! Why go through all the hard work and perseverance to finish school to learn something that is not Buddhist in nature and use it for the purpose of Buddhism? I am confused about being Buddhist and the whole concept of Buddhism! This is what I know is that most Buddhists are polite for nothing!

We are not living in the ancient time with no technology, such as computer, etc.. We are living in a modern world. I don't think your thousand Buddhas would mind, if they're here this day. In the old day they traveled bare foot, by boats or ride horses, etc., today we fly on plane.

If you want monks to live like thousand years ago, you should make rules and tell them not to fly by plane or communicate through phone, etc.

This Monk is sure an intelligent and a very good monk. He can take his knowledge to help those thousand lazy monks out there to not just eat, sleep and chanting while million Khmers are starving.

This monk is a new reformer. I think Monks not just learn Pali, Sangskret, but they should learn to be Doctors, Lawyers, .. Anthropologists, and Mathematicians, etc., to help the community. They can be advisers to the Khmers.

Keep your ancient systems in your dark closet, and let the monks seek educations to help the society.

That Monk is dumb, he should not wear Cap at all, and the Gown should be Ok.

Since non of monks are allowed to wear Cap.

Achieving a higher education is one thing, but being inconsiderate of Buddha's law is not acceptable.
