Why politicians should be barred from naming public institutions after themselves

"Bun Ranny Hun Sen High School", Cambodia
A school latrine - also by the same name?

by School of Vice

Thank you for raising this very important point. In English people say something like "What tangled web we weave" when they or someone gets caught up in his/her own designs or schemes. But, this practice of naming public institutions like schools or libraries after an incumbent politician or ‘public servant’ who is still holding public office is quite out of order and should thus be banned or declared 'unconstitutional' and unlawful in some way.

The principal reason for arguing against such a practice is to do with the need to prevent politicians from trying to shape public, and particularly, educational institutions in their own privatised ‘political image’ in so far as the practice could have lasting psychological imprint upon successive generations who are being conditioned to accept without question policies and agenda of a political party merely because the party in question is run by someone whose name happens to be the same as that of the school or college they had attended in their formative years.

If there is a public clamour to name a school or similar public institutions after someone, this should be determined by a democratic decision or a joint decision taken by concerned local community and other involved interest groups, and the person after whom the institution to be named must be retired from political office or is no longer serving public servant.

The political implications of naming such public institutions after an incumbent political figure are clear enough. For instance, in the 1950s and 1960s the then Prince Sihanouk had taken similar liberty by christening himself "Prince Father" which might have been acceptable politically or morally had he remained outside the arena of national politics. Yet the reality was Sihanouk abdicated the crown in favour of his father so as to free himself from the palace to assume the mantle of an undisguised autocratic political leader. The crucial point to be noted here is that this kind of personification of and by an individual who is at the same time actively involved in politics - something in the realm of a "personality cult" - is both undemocratic and politically problematic in the long term. In Cambodia’s case, this kind of personification has been one of the main incubating vehicles for ancient feudalism to persist and even flourish, allowing the Monarch as “God-King” to demand and expect unconditional loyalty and obedience from his unquestioning subjects who remain largely semi-literate.

Thus, it was Sihanouk’s public residue [often mistaken as ‘charisma’] as “Prince Father” in the conditioned minds of many Cambodians, especially, among his former rural subjects that had made it possible for the Red Khmers to rapidly swell their ranks with new recruits in response to his radio broadcast appeal for armed resistance against Lon Nol. In this specific instance, it is clear that such personification carries the inherent risk on a massive scale and proportion as the fate of the millions is locked into the whims, fallibilities and recklessness of the few.

Moreover, the PM of any country has no right to name any public institution after him/herself since such a public figure is not there to elevate or accentuate his own political party’s agenda beyond the remit of the democratic mandate - which is subject to regular reviews - or to apotheosise his own ego in this manner. Public schools are government initiatives and are largely financed by public monies or state resources. If the PM in question claims that the money comes out of his own pocket then he must be required to disclose the sources of his income, and even then the schools must not be named after him or his financial patrons. After all, if nothing else, it is morally reprehensible that public institutions are forced to bear his name when the resources and finance that have gone into their constructions came from the state’s coffer or public sources in the first place.

i know, cambodia should have a law that prohibit public institution, etc to be named after a living person, unless it is from privately donated money, then it's an exception, really. in america for instance, noted individual only gets their name on public buildings, landmarks, etc only after they passed away, not a living person, you know. there's a reason for that because it can prevent unethical, immoral, unprofessional or abusive individual from gaining something for themselves only. i'm sure sihanouk named the city after himself when he was in power, that sure didn't set a good example for others to follow, really! it's about ethics and professionalism and morality, really. a law for that would discourage bad or greedy or narcissistic people from abusing the system if they can, really! there are still many many things cambodia should look into to prevent the conflict of interest in public service in gov't, etc, you know.

it shows people wanted their name known by naming something after them, really! cambodia should have law for everything in the book, really, especially after all the abuses we see already since the past to the present, etc, really!

people like sihanouk are never a good example for others to follow, really!

in america, people simply say it is against the law to do that! that's what cambodia should be saying too, really!

did you know america has law for everything, really! it is known as the land of the rule of law, you know.

Hey, if American presidents can each have a library of airport named after him, Cambodia should have at minimum, 7 public or prime ministerial libraries, schools, or airports named after him, because the numbers of years Cambodian leader has been holding to power!

The wife's or chumteav's name added to the husband name befits the khmer expression of "somnab yaung deiy" or " pdei sak buon prapoun sak pram."

The poster above use too many 'really' in her sentence.
It's really annoying!
Just hope she doesn't talk the same way she writes.

Wait a minute, they left out their kids name! Wtf!

Anonymous said...

The kids will have to work on their own to put their names on public properties, of course, after daddy and mommy have promoted them to power places, through their own merits and competency!!!

Anonymous said...

Don't worry folks!

In Cambodia nothing lasts so their names will be removed when somebody else comes to power; it is just a matter of time.

It is the attitude of the power holders and it can only be prevented when the mass is educated, informed or smart enough to protest such a behavour; for now you can't prevent it for Cambodian leaders love to name everything after themselves without any slightest shame.

Pissed off

This kind of shit - naming public building after people - originated from Sdach Lob Sihanouk.

Sihanouk used to be " Preah Beida this, Preah Beida that, Preah Beida Sampheung Cheat, etc...

Now, a new Lob named Hun Sen copies that idea, and Hun Shit thought that it is cool.

When Vietnam fully takes over Cambodia, those name shit will disappear forever.

Ah Kbot Cheat Hun Sen,

Remove your damn name out of the public building, Ah Leukeu.

Politicians should be barred from naming public institutions after themselves, but should we ban politicians use their own name as political party name??????

Anonymous said...

also, they do that simply because they can with impunity. i bet when cambodia reforms or changes that bad tradition, then people like that will think twice before unashamedly naming every public building, landmarks, bridges, etc in every town and city after themselves. to me, that's so conceited, unlawful, unethical, unprofessional, immoral, incompetent and set bad example for others, you know.

12:48pm, good point, anything to do with the service of the nation to include political party name, etc should be barred from using the politicians' own name, really. if that party is running in the election, then it should be barred from using its founder's name, etc... in the law, they should spell it all out, so no doubt or no loophole for abuse, conflict of interest, etc, really! again, if it's related to public service, to public institution, public landmarks, etc, it should be barred from using the politician's name. well, a private donation is an exception to the rule, really. and post-mortum is also an exception to the rule as well, you know. otherwise, if not regulated, the bad tradition of abuse, of greedy, of incompetent, of unprofessional or unethical or immorality will continue, you know. so, cambodia should have to regulate that from continue to go on again, i think. during open public debate, they should talk about it, really!

Does anyone here understand what the Vietnamese whore is on about?

Anonymous said...

Nope, I really don't know what " really, really, really " is really talking about either !!!

Through out these years seeing place and school and things name after PM Hun Sen, I just feel that PM Hun Sen have committed to himself and say " I will name 1 million places and school after me".... And then he turn to his adviser and ask " How many do we have now?" And the guy said " about 1000 ". And then he thought " That's still left behind too far." And he asked again " Ok, now who else we haven't ask for money yet?".....

To the Great King Sihanouk:

S-21, Tuol Sleng should be in honored and named after the Great Cambodian King Norodum Sihanouk...

The mass grave sites should be named after Norodum Monique Sihanouk for inviting the VietCongs and Khmer Rouges to start the war with the Lon Nol armies and the Cambodian people.

while supporting 4:45 AM's comment above, and on to a different subject, I only have one thing to say here:

Had Cambodia a truly decomcratic country and not run by a temple/pagoda's thug Viet's slave like HUN SEN, SOV's 300 words or so for this thread would have not been necessary. But personally SOV, you've said it all!!!

From now on, we can't just say or refer a "killing field" any more.

We have to say "Somdec Sihanouk green death soil field". This is an idea to honor Somdec Sihanouk for killing his own people.

Please don't say anything bad about Somdec Sihanouk because he might fled to China again.

I am not taking side with anybody. I just want to see KI getting better and better.
KI should be a place for people to express freely their opinion.

Some people have objected to the person who usually said OK, you know, really.

But we should look at it positively. KI has been gaining strength because of its openness. If KI tries to exert its 'power" too much, it will naturally be weakened as time goes by.

If something is not broken, do not fix it, because it might produce an adverse effect that KI does not want to see.

Therefore, please leave that OK, You know, really alone. We need all kinds of opinion.

But then flooding only selective postings with the same nonsense over and over again over a long period of time may be looked at as more than just an harassment ....to some that do care about KI and/or Cambodia and if one were to scrutinize this so-called "you know, really, ok" a little closer, one may go so far as to say that it is a sabotage altogether....

Well said 11:07am! Thank you!

It's no longer constructive when one starting to repeat itself on a daily basis. It gets old!
Now, all I'm looking for is those key word that this person use and I skip his/her post.
I am however concerned, that this person either have a short term memory or he/she probably diagnose with Turrets Syndrome.
What i'm trying to say is, what he/she wrote yesterday, might as well cut and paste for todays news. IMO!
Either way, it's annoying.
