Sihanouk, educated and brought up in Vietnam by the Viet and the French, never once thought of preparing for war in order to have lasting peace in Cambodia...
Cheated and duped (to believe in fake peace) by the Viet, Sihanouk abandoned the theory of "pour avoir de la paix, il faut préparer pour la guerre" altogether and completely...
Sihanouk was so duped to have named Cambodia an "oasis" of South East Asia and a virgin gal (Koh Santepheap or Srey Kramom in Khmer), enjoying making movies and playing music...
Sihanouk was so duped to join the communist Khmer Rouge rank to finally exterminate his own educated khmer blood and crush his own khmer fighting spirit forever...
Where are what left of Sihanouk's regime/era now???
The early 60s saw the best of King Father Norodom Sihanouk's regime of Sangkum Reastr Niyum in its attempt to build Cambodia, her infrastructure, human resources and to keep the ravaging Vietnam war out of the beautiful land of Kampuchea.
An island of peace was a name given to Cambodia by the world as King Father and his Sangkum, through his mercurial foreign policies which increasingly and undoubtedly irritated his generals, played skillfully the East against the West to keep Cambodia out of the engulfing wars.
The drawback of mercurial policies is that it has its lifetime and unfortunately in the end you have not even one single country as a true friend as everyone will manipulate you to obtain what they want in the name of friendship and aids.
Cambodia's coveted peace of the 60s was actually not sitting on a solid cool ground, but rather on a pan of hot and simmering oils which, all along, continuously threatened to consume it.
King Father Norodom Sihanouk is a controversial Khmer politician described very well as a Prince of Light and a Prince of Darkness by Milton Osborne in one of his books on Southeast Asia and its politics. Without a doubt, he is partly, but not totally and alone responsible for all of the tragedies taking place in Cambodia after his downfall on March 18, 1970.
While the war in Vietnam was raging and the prospect of Vietnamese reunification posing a deadly and inevitable threat to Cambodia's survival as a nation, Son Ngoc Thanh and his Khmer Serei, Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge, Son Ngoc Minh also known as Achar Mean and his Khmer Vietminh and Lon Nol/Sisowath Siri Matak group created havoc secretly and openly against Sihanouk, each in the name of defending and protecting Cambodia and her people. None of these people could work together at all to even form a front against Sihanouk, their so-called common enemy. They had chosen Sihanouk as a deadly enemy and were willing to work with foreigners to achieve their goals, of course, in the name of defending Cambodia from Vietnam and accusing each other of treason. I am pretty sure Vietnamese leaders were having a good time seeing the Cambodians chopped each other to pieces!
We can see very clearly that the biggest obstacle for Cambodia to move forward in the direction of prosperity and security rests for now with her so-called leaders who never put the interests of the country first. The same unity problem of the 60s remains today as it was then with no sign of reduced intensity. Will Cambodians be mature enough soon to put pressure on their leaders so that they will have no choice, but to learn to work together for the common interests of the country and her people? Hopefully they will be soon before it is too late.
Neighbouring countries know fully well Cambodian weakness and will exploit it to the fullest and who wouldn’t?
Burn his body over there (China). Don't bring back to Cambodia. He was a Traitor to Khmer people. The Khmer people have suffered enough by him. He did not respect even his own mother. He was an evil king . He should be alive until he can serve his punishment in the Khmer Rouge trail. Please don't forget he was the person who killed Lok Protean Sam Rainsy's father.

So, can I say that you are one of what left of Sihanouk's regime/era now then, Mr. Pissed-off, Sir?
