Cambodian Americans Condemn the Unjust Verdict of Mr. Mam Sonando

Press Release
Cambodian Americans Condemn the Unjust Verdict of Mr. Mam Sonando, Cambodian Human Rights Defender, to 20 Years
A Cambodian court on Monday, October 1, 2012 sentenced Mr. Mam Sonando to 20 years in prison on insurrection charges that critics claim are part of a political vendetta by the government. The AP reported that "the 71-year-old Mam Sonando was convicted and sentenced on four counts related to an alleged secessionist movement in eastern Cambodia. He was charged with instigating an alleged insurrection in Kratie province in May this year and inciting armed rebellion."
Mr. Mam Sonando is President of the Cambodian Association of Democrats and owner of the Beehive Radio that is one of the country's few radio stations broadcasting criticism of Prime Minister Hun Sen's government.
CAHRAD condemns this unjust and politically-motivated verdict. The ruling Cambodian government is attempting to intimidate and silence the opposition with scare-tactics as the national general election is approaching. The protest in Kratie province resulted from a land dispute that caused many farmers to be wrongfully evicted from their homes.
The dispute involves a 58-square-mile tract of farmland that had been awarded as a concession to a private company. The farmers resisted eviction, and in May 2012, a 15-year-old girl was shot dead when hundreds of armed police stormed the settlement.
A month before Mr. Mam Sonando was detained, Prime Minister Hun Sen had called for his arrest, charging that he was leading a plot to overthrow the government and establish a state within a state. The court verdict was simply to comply with the Prime Minister's order and not by a decision of an independent judiciary system.
CAHRAD is appealing to all human rights organizations, institutions, governments and people around the world to protest and condemn this sentence and to demand the immediate release of this human rights defender and other innocent people.
