Is the Current Cambodian Monarchy still Relevant to the Cambodian people?

The King and the King-Maker. Two of Cambodia's ancient and most revered institutions - the Monarchy and the Buddhist Clergy - have been effectively ostracized and transformed into no more than ceremonial vestiges and polite spectacles by the demands of the country's rapacious ruling brand of politics and political elite. Both present King Sihamoni and his late father and former King Sihanouk have been part hereditary and part fortuitous beneficiaries of the ingrained reverence and loyalty attached to these two traditional institutions. Everyone - Royals included - have understood and accepted the present futility and the hollow facade of the Monarchy in the veneer of its once pervasive, binding, ruling, protective and corrective influence; and yet this inward acknowledgement has not been enough to dissuade or sway them against their cynical private calculations and their unconfined hypocrisy in relations to the Cambodian people and their true, actual aspirations, which alone legitimise and underpin the Spirit of the Monarchy as such. The Cambodian Monarchy will therefore be "preserved" and violently "defended" against its perceived foes even, as long as this enforced docility and public futility remain - School of Vice [image reproduced]
Two young mourners pray for the soul of the deceased former Monarch outside the Royal Palace, Phnom Penh. Reverence towards traditional institutions and public symbols of authority is ingrained in the Khmer people - School of Vice [image: google]
The suffering of the people is the suffering of the King - Young victims of BKL forced eviction pleading for their King's intervention to no avail in front of the Royal Palace. Opinion by "Pissed Off"

The article is right. It is just a matter of time that the centuries-old Cambodian monarchy will turn into an irrelevance or even come to an end as it has started to die from within for some time and the royals of Cambodia including His majesty have nobody else to blame, but themselves.

Courage is antecedent to long-term vision which decides present action and present action brings about desired future. One has to be willing to die in order to live. Without courage we have started to die a shameful death from within.

King Sihamoni has chosen to have the existence of his monarchy defended not by the citizens of the country whom he claims to love and protect, but by the strongman of Cambodia who has recently professed again to defend it at all cost in front of the dead body of King Father Norodom Sihanouk.

His Majesty has lost the very powerful and irreplaceable connection to His subjects by refusing to speak up on the behalf of the poor people. They are the true defenders of the monarchy if the monarchy can show itself to be relevant in their lives!

Imagine what it would be like as far as the King's reputation goes, had His Majesty come out in strong protest of the filling in of the Boeung Kak natural lake and defended the rights of the poor by threatening to abdicate the throne if His concern of the environment and justice were not addressed by the government of PM Hun Sen.

Though His monarchy may be abolished by the CPP of Hun Sen as a result of His protest, it will live forever in the heart and mind of many Cambodians and history. He might even

win the respect of the CPP including PM Hun Sen as well. In addition, the CPP would have a lot to lose by allowing the abdication to proceed. The CPP may make a deal! It is too bad His Majesty has made it so easy for PM Hun Sen to reward his cronies at the expense of the majority of poor Cambodians.

Choosing to remain silent has kept the physical being of monarchy alive, but rid its body of its very meaningful soul that represents the purpose of its existence.

Is it too late now to act? It is rather late, but certainly not too late and His Majesty would have to decide for himself how He wants to be remembered. Perhaps He should not listen anymore to his useless royal advisors whose advices are not for His interests but certainly for theirs. After all, the recent Cambodian royals have not achieved or done anything much for the country anyway. They are unnecessary burdens for the country.

NOT AGAIN!

នាំគ្នាផ្អើលទូទាំងប្រទេស មើលព្រះចន្ទ ថាឃើញព្រះភក្រ្ត័ សម្តេចតា

After he was deposed by gen. Lon nol in 1970, on one full moon night, people told each other to look at the moon to see ព្រះភក្រ្ត័ សម្តេចតា.
I looked at it and what I saw was just the normal full moon.

The answer is absolutely not! They were out of commission since the Coup d'tat in 1993.
I think the question itself is irrelevant.

Plainly and simply, some opinion may just be irrelevant and vanished into la la land!!!

Of course the monarchy is still relevant to the Cambodian people, otherwise we would not have seen more than one million people came out to the streets to pay respect to king Sihanouk's body last week.

Experiment with republicanism in the 1970s (Lon Nol and Khmer Rouge) and the 1980s (Heng Samrin and Hun Sen) was disastrous for Cambodia.

Republicanism may be good somewhere else, but in Cambodia it has been proven that it was and still is not better than monarchism, as I have said earlier.

When the general population is more educated and the political leaders are more mature politically, then we can think of republicanism. Fore now and in the foreseeable future, I still think that the monarchy is pretty much relevant to Cambodia and the Cambodian people, if politicians, like Hun Sen for example, do not meddle with the affairs of the Royal Palace- I mean let the king exercise his constitutional powers without coercion or threats from the PM.

I disagree with whoever wrote this article.

King Sihamoni is surrounded by Yuon Hanoi/Hun Sen's watchdogs, he is their prisoner. But why does anyone think he is a free man?

I heard he wants to move back to France and take his elderly mother, his two nieces (daughters of his young brother) along with.

There is nothing anyone can do to save Cambodia, except GOD.

Monarchy from this point forward will nor be in the same kind of relevance as during the era of King Norodom Sihanouk.

However, there are now more pressing issues for Cambodia than the relevancy of the monarchy. Let's just start with the border issue, and then imagine when the donations stopped, and the garment industry is gone or reduced, and the decrease in the number of people who want to see Angkor Wat...

Let's compare the two Khmer leaders Ex King Norodom Sihanouk VS PM Hun Sen.

Sihanouk said Kos Tral islands belong to the Khmer under his regime but PM Hun Sen said Kos Tral island belong to Vietnam according to his treaties with Vietnam under his regime.

So Who is the Khmers Patriot? and who is the Khmers traitor? Can any professional out there explain in detail?

6.20, I have heard also your story and I think that this story is pertinent.
First we all know from reading Sihanouk’s “bulletin” that he asked his beloved son Sihamoni to step up on the throne until his death. In doing so, history cannot condemn him as a Cambodian monarchy destroyer. He was haunted by this judgment since Lon Nol’s coup d’Etat followed by his long exile abroad.
Sihamoni is a good guy, he used to live alone. At his 9 years old he lived in Prague seeing once per year his parents, I saw him personally in Paris where he enjoyed so much his life. He definitely does not care about his current position, about Khmer monarchy, he is fed up of all protocol imposed by the palace minister and he is dreaming to take his mom back to Paris, the land of his happiness.
Hun Sen, king maker, on the other hand has a plan. He loudly told the entire world and before Sihanouk body that he is going to protect the monarchy. But what monarchy? or rather to ask question: what dynasty? His own dynasty. Actually, all he did until now is to show people that he still gets his 80% of support from Cambodian people through his CPP. Once Sihamoni leaves Cambodia, Hun Sen is going to make his plan in action with the following steps: he first tell Cambodians that it is impossible to elect any royal family member because no one has sufficient quality to be king, then he will ask his entourage to tinker with a law voted by his CPP parliament to enable him to organize the plebiscite. EUREKA it is easy, remember Napoleon, how a man can become king with plebiscite. The new dynasty is born, we are going to celebrate the new dynasty called HUN dynasty. Le Roi est parti vive le roi Sen!! Life goes on, Prey Sar will be enlarged and modernized.

That may work in the 5th or 10th century, HS would be a fool ignorant to make kings and princes among his peasant clans in this day and age.

Burn his body over there (China). Don't bring back to Cambodia. He was a Traitor to Khmer people. The Khmer people have suffered enough by him. He did not respect even his own mother. He was an evil king . He should be alive until he can serve his punishment in the Khmer Rouge trail. Please don't forget he was the person who killed Lok Protean Sam Rainsy's father.

1:04 PM,

We suggest you talk once at the time. First, we need to take down the Vietnamese puppet Hun Sen. Why are you so critical to King Sihanouk more than Hun Sen.

You need to be careful and think, buddy. One step at time, but not too much.

We go with you because you are Khmer citizen. Again and again, just be careful with your comment. We need to take down the Communist PM Hun Sen who has been pleasing his Vietnamese/Yuon bosses in Hanoi to hurt Khmer people and destroy Khmer/Cambodia natural resources and illegally signed the deal with his Vietnamese bosses (just like they married to each others) against the Paris Peace Agreement Accords in 1991.

We don't mean to back you down. We, you and all of us are Khmer and support to each other.

Your game dividing my Khmer people does not work anymore.

Each of us (human or animal)'s destiny or fate will lead us, we cannot modify nor we can erase our past Karma. Our sufferings today is the results of our past Karma we did in the past.

If a commoner was raised and rose can becoming Queen, and an aristocrat woman (royal blood of Spencer line) such as princess Diana was groomed to be Queen lost her title and ended up dead on a high speed chasing with her boy Muslim boyfriend, don't you think it were their destinies?

King Sihanouk another wife princess Norodom Norleak, a royal blood who lives hiding in Paris today alone secretly supported by Queen Monineath was not a whore when she slept with too many men in Cambodia and in France?

If a commoner (Queen Minineath of Cambodia or Queen Rania of Jordant or Queen Sarah of Brunei...can becoming Queen because of their fate they did in their past life or this life, and the royal cannot be Queens, then why are they whore?

princess Norodom Norleak, and princess Diana slept with many men, why were not whores?

Why are you not believing in Bap or Bonn or bad deed or good deed..?

A monster like you cannot live in peace with anybody because you are to evil. It is you or any body who is the judge, but GOD only.

Khmer Buddhists are the most evils ever live, they have been suffered and will always be suffered for their too much sins.
