The European Parliament published three human rights resolutions today, condemning Taliban's harassment of girls in Pakistan and expressing their concerns about land evictions and politically motivated convictions in Cambodia and the working conditions of migrant workers in the United Arab Emirates.
MEPs condemned the Taliban’s attack on 14-year-old Pakistani activist, Malala Yousafzai, who has defended the fundamental right of women to education on her blog. They have also called the government of Pakistan to immediately stop violence and discrimination against all women and girls and to increase funding for public schools. In addition, they urged the Commission to cooperate with Pakistan in order to develop education programmes for women.
As far as violence against activists in Cambodia are concerned, MEPs said that they are worried about the politically motivated convictions against political critics, land activists and human rights defenders in Cambodia. Also, according to local human rights groups, more than 400.000 Cambodians have been evicted from their homes or have had their land grabbed since 2003, and as a result, MEPs have called the Cambodian government to stop all land evictions. They have also urged for a change in their electoral system.
Finally, the European Parliament condemned assault, repression and intimidation against human rights activists, as well as death penalty and torture that take place in the United Arab Emirates. It has also highlighted the need to improve the living and working conditions of thousands of migrant workers and called the government to revise its legal and regulatory system. The Emirates has approximately 4 million migrant workers and many have their pay withheld or their passports confiscated.
