Siam City Cement Plc (SCCC) and Chip Mong Group, an established Cambodian trading and distributing firm, have agreed to construct a new cement plant in Kampot province of Cambodia by 2015 to cater to the country's growing demand.

According to a report in the Phnom Penh Post, rapid economic development in Cambodia has created a huge demand for cement by the construction sector, accoprding to Sok Chantha, public relations manager for the Chip Mong Group.

Demand is growing at 14-18% per year, according to Ouk Bunseng, deputy plant manager for the Cambodia Cement Chakrey Ting Factory.

After a year of delays delays, a memorandum of agreement between the two firms was eventually signed on Dec 8 for a feasibility study to construct a plant with an annual production capacity of 1 to 1.5 million tonnes.

Its completion is expected within three three years at an estimated to cost US$200 million.

The deal will make Chip Mong into one of the largest firms in Cambodia.
