Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital became a de facto Khmer Rouge tribunal detention centre yesterday, at one point hosting all three defendants currently on trial — an episode that underscored how precarious the future of Case 002 may be in light of the co-accused’s ages and health.
Court officials and attorneys confirmed yesterday that not only did Nuon Chea remain at the hospital —where he has been treated for acute bronchitis since collapsing on Sunday — but co-defendants Khieu Samphan and Ieng Sary were admitted as well, with the former reporting difficulty breathing and the latter checking in for a medical examination.
“Khieu Samphan was brought to the Khmer Soviet Friendship Hospital this morning, suffering from shortness of breath,” court legal communications officer Lars Olsen said. “He will remain under observation at the hospital until further notice.”
Although details of his condition were scarce, Khieu Samphan co-counsel Arthur Vercken said his client appeared to have come down with a cold as early as Tuesday and simply needed time to rest.
Since a stint in the hospital in 2008 when he was treated for hypertension, Khieu Samphan — at 81, the youngest of the defendants — has been the healthiest of the co-accused.
“He’s the only one who’s [in the courtroom] every day— every morning, every afternoon,” Vercken said, noting that the long hours in court would be taxing even for a younger man.
Michael Karnavas, co-counsel for ex-foreign minister Ieng Sary, also said that his client had been taken to the hospital, but not because of a specific ailment.
“I’m told that he went there just for a check-up,” Karnavas, who was unsure when Ieng Sary would return to the detention centre, said.
The perennially ailing Ieng Sary was hospitalised for two months late last year, and has remained largely bedridden since his release.
“He was coughing last week, and seemed kind of in and out of it,” Karnavas said. “But they informed us that unless he goes on oxygen, there’s no need to inform the court.”
Meanwhile, Nuon Chea co-counsel Son Arun said that while his client’s overall health was not good, his bronchitis was reportedly improving.
“The medical report from the hospital that was forwarded by the ECCC said that today [Wednesday] he feels better than yesterday, but I have had no time to visit him,” he said. “Yesterday, he was really awful.”
Cambodia Justice Initiative program officer Long Panhavuth called the issue of the defendants’ health “troublesome”.
Following a speedy adjournment Monday morning, hearings have remained indefinitely postponed pending Nuon Chea’s release from the hospital.
“As I understand it, the trial chamber is trying to conclude the first segment of the trial in late March,” pointed out Panhavuth.
“So will the trial chamber be able to complete it or not?
“I doubt it.”

For minority of Cambodian they see Khieu Samphan, Hou Nim and Hou Youn are evils.

The man as a minister of commerce in 1963 riding a bycicle to work as minister of commerce under Sihanouk regime and after Khieu Samphan became minister of commerce in Cambodia his mother still selling Cheng ang ( traditional Cambdodan dired bananas.

And many Camaodian agree with me that this ECCC is stronlgy under yuon Hanoi influent and this ECCC will convict you and Nuon Chea and to put you both in jail for lives, not because of killing so many Cambodian as they accused between 1975-1979 because of Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan protecting Cambodian and Cambodia from becaming second Kampuchea-Krom.
Although I'ma new generation, but I agree with your argument above 100%. The PhD dessertations of two men I found in Sorbonne University's library (Sorbonne Universities).
Unfortunately I have't found dessertation of Mr Hun Manet in London. Why?

Let me share the following with you to judge it yourself.
Most Khmer or most Cambodian we all know that:
Ah late Ho Chi Minh created Yuon Communist Party in 1930.
1941 ah yuon communist party created yuon Viet Minh .
1946-1953 youn Viet Minh who created Khmer Viet Minh to fight against French colony in Cambodia to remove French colony and replace Indochina Federation of ah Ho Chi Minh to put Lao and Cambodia under yuon yoke.
1951 yuon Hanoi changed its party name from Vietnamese Communist Party to the Vietnamese Worker Party and named Khmer Viet Minh Group to The Khmer People's Revolutionary Party or KPRP, KPRP was the old name of CPP , so KPRP created by yuon Hanoi before 1951 and named it as KPRP in 1951.
So it is very clear that yuon Hanoi created CPP ( so CPP was a group of former Khmer Viet Minh created by , and installed to power by yuon Hanoi to exterminate ethnics Cambodian and to put Lao and Cambodia under yuon Hanoi yoke.
As some Cambodian know these former Khmer Viet Minh are :
1. Heng Samrin.
2. Chea Sim.
3. So Phim.
4. Keo Meas.
5. Pen Sovann.
6. Chan Si.
7. Chea soth.
8. And many, many more.
So above is real story for Khmer people must know because real Khmer history has been twisting around and Khmer has been in great danger by yuon Hanoi ambition know as Indochina Federation to exterminate Khmer ethnics and to put Lao and Khmer under yuon yoke as they already did to Laos.

The word Viet Minh meants Khmere/Vietnamese or you can say Khmere who are living in South Vetnam.
Vietnamese called Khmere in Viatnam Viet Minh and Cambodian called them Khmere Krom. They are all the same people.
As far as the trial concern, you don't learn much if you was there during that time, you knew what really happened. It was true the way the witness telling you over and over again.
If I was the prosecutor, I would ask the role of the Chinese advisors. I learned that there were from 10 to 20 thousands of them in the country. What happend to them ? I am not suprise if their jobs was to give order to KR cadres.
Base on Khmere history, the Khmere empire expanded their terrytories by married NOT war. You can look at Ankor Watt wall. It was an open society and every walked of lives were included.But some people want to described Khmere people as barbaric and used war to gain terrytorie. The Khmere empire never had any intension to change the way of life for any ethenic group. Now, you can say that it was a bad idea to do that.
The Khmere empire should nationalize them to speak and write Khmere only. What I was tought was that, Khmere are too nice to the neighbor and they took advantage of it.
The bottom line is, Khmere should use past mistake and learn from it. When the stranger act too nice to you, you need to find out what exactly they wanted, not on what they said. After you find out their intension then you can make a decision.
When the Chinese told Khmere to watch out for the Vietnamese, Khmere fall right on the Chinese hand. Every situation is different. There are some time, it is good to have Vietnamese as a friend and there are some time it is good to have Thai as a friend. It is just depend on the situation you are in.
Just remember this, every one around you is trying to take advantage of you. You just have to watch out !!!!
