Rolling the dice
More than 300 workers have resigned from the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Poipet after their bosses asked them to sign fixed-duration contracts, a union representative said yesterday.
Sat Sep, a leader of the Free Trade Workers Union at the casino before his dismissal last year, claimed bosses had tried to move workers onto six-month contracts in a bid to drive his union out.
“Almost all members of my union have resigned and taken their seniority bonuses,” he said.
Eng Kosal, who worked at Tropicana for 12 years, said he had jumped before he was pushed. “If I agreed to sign the new contract, I would have been sacked later when it finished.”
A representative from Tropicana declined to comment.
Meanwhile, more than 300 workers at panties-producer Kingsland Garment, in the capital’s Meanchey district, protested on Friday after the company appeared to have closed without telling them.
