Losing our Mother Tongue

Losing our mother tongue
Soprach Tong
The Phnom Penh Post
February 9, 2013
Khmer citizens must know the national language clearly, in both oral and written form, to ensure it survives.

But when writing in Khmer, which is their native tongue, no one seems to care about accuracy. Even if the dictionary of Patriarch Chuon Nat is installed on their computer, they never bother to open it.

When writing in foreign languages such as English, French or Chinese, Cambodians pay careful attention to grammar and phrasing. Some even carry a dictionary with them and constantly refer to it.

But when writing in Khmer, which is their native tongue, no one seems to care about accuracy. Even if the dictionary of Patriarch Chuon Nat is installed on their computer, they never bother to open it.

This is presumably because they think they know everything there is to know about the Khmer language. But is using a Khmer dictionary such a bad thing?

Some countries in the ASEAN community are experiencing a similar trend and are trying to halt it.

The Thai government has voiced concern that children attending international schools, or schools in which only English is used, often cannot write and speak Thai properly. Some even choose not to speak Thai at all.

On official documents and in the school curriculum, dates, months and years are still determined according to the Thai solar calendar, indicating the Thais care about their traditions and their mother tongue.

In Indonesia, the government has announced that the teaching of English in primary schools must cease from July this year. This step is being taken solely to strengthen the national language.

Although there is no English program in Cambodian primary schools, a lot of private schools use only English.

Today’s Khmer parents are apparently quite happy to hear their children speaking English more than their native tongue.

Some are proud of how well their children speak English, but they rarely say their children are good at the Khmer language.

Is this because English is popular in society, just as French was during King Sihanouk’s era?
Sometimes they begin with English instead of Khmer, such as “Hello, everybody!” rather than saying Som chumreap suor lok, lok srey, lok pou, neak ming, bang ph’oun taing aohs khnea chea ty rab an (“Hello, ladies and gentlemen”; “Hello, uncle and aunt”; “Hello, dear friends”).

Some young people seemingly pretend to be unable to speak their mother tongue. Listening to them is an affront to one’s ears.

This attitude of trying to ignore their own language is the opposite of that displayed by children of immigrants, who are trying to learn Khmer and practise it so they can speak, read, write and listen very well.

Sometimes, this trend offends the eyes as well as the ears. Khmer people working for private companies and NGOs often write official letters to state institutions purely in English.

Government officials should return such letters to the senders with a note encouraging them to write in Khmer, or simply refuse to accept them.

Several factors make it unlikely that young Cambodians will improve their command of the mother tongue:
  1. Fewer documents for study and research are published in Khmer than in English. The situation is different in Thailand and Vietnam, as the government employs teams to translate such documents into their own language for students.
  2. Tardiness in disseminating new terms, in addition to deficiencies in the Khmer dictionary of Patriach Chuon Nat, which contains only about 20,000 words. (According to Dr Vong Meng, director of monitoring and inspection at the Royal Academy of Cambodia’s National Council of Khmer Language, the council is compiling a new dictionary that will expand and update the work of Patriarch Chuon Nat. It will contain more than 40,000 words.)
  3. Carelessness in reading and writing Khmer by some people who have never really acquired the habit of reading.
  4. The vocabulary of some local Khmer-language newspapers is very limited, and there are many mis-spellings, so some people choose to read English-language papers instead.
  5. Job markets are widely open to foreign languages, and some companies or organisations use English, French, or Chinese in job advertisements.
This prompts some people to learn foreign languages so they will have better employment opportunities.

In short, learning foreign languages — particularly English, as it is used globally— is a good thing, especially when it comes to the ASEAN community’s integration by 2015.
Each of us tries hard to learn English like the people of Singapore, a tiny country that is campaigning for English education in the interests of economic growth and an even higher international profile.

Singapore, however, doesn’t have its own language. Its population is made up of many races, with Chinese the majority. This is quite different from Cambodia, which has a single mother tongue.

Khmer citizens must know the national language clearly, in both oral and written form, to ensure it survives.

How about those Khmer citizens whose native language is not Khmer, such as the Cham, Bunong, Jarai, Kuy, Lao and so on?

Why it become like this, why is the foreign language dominated on our language?Because of :
- The Cambodian education Ministry is not care to the education countrywide.
- No one pay any attention to the education system in our Cambodia.
- The Job market requires in English knowledge in basic.
- The graduated students hardly to access the job with government.
- The private companies and organization are definitely required English knowledgeable to perform their job.....

One can learn to speak and write more than one
language.
Khmers, especially young ones should learn, at least Khmer and English.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

First, those are khmer inhabitant children. What does one expect to see and what kind of Khmer does one want them to be after three generations under the Viet controlled regime of Hun Sen?

And can one imagine about Khmer's territorial integrity at the same time?

And finally, would one dare to [intelligently] imagine about khmer written and spoken languages of those such as Theary Seng and the rest of the expats around the world there not to mention some smart guys that try to beautify it with comma...

They say "God save the queen"...I'd say - God save Khmer!!!

It is Cambodia teachers to blame for not holding their students accountable for correct spelling. That lack of disciplinary causes from low teacher salaries which the govt do not want to invest in the future of Cambodian education system. If you want the students to learn, you have to have good teachers.

I agree with you 100%!
A nation must have her identity/pride without identity or pride its just a history of her once was a NATION;Champa was one of those nation,Khmer Surin,Khmer Krom etc.
Now kampuchea kondal [Cambodia] as we now known as a NATION of Khmer left over from once was almighty "Khmer empire" stretched from Malaysia to Tongking China now its almost loss her prides due to unpatraitic of Khmer's leaders started from the last century to nowadays.

Identity/prides;That start from those leaders and teachers and educators cultural instructors teaching young Khmers to loves their own heritage and language arts and government job is enforce proper writing/reading and promotes educational institution in khmer's language literature only other foriegn's languages are secondary, khmer's language is PRIORITY for official uses as a NATION first language,in order to hold a job as a public servant to Cambodia all applicants must be able to read and write in Khmer properly or at least have high school diploma.

I hope that educators of Khmer society would take a look at these matter about closely and enforcing using Khmer's language as a priority language in the country and stop this foreigner language from invading our public education.NOTE;KHMER'S LANGUAGE IS THE FIRST AND PRIORITY LANGUAGE IN CAMBODIA AS A NATION,all others are secondary.

In that picture, I don't see any Cambodian boys.

Cambodian boys must be so preoccupied helping their parent to get the necessity for survival.

Samdach Leu Keu Hun Sen,

It seems like you have been helping only the Vietnamese.

In all honesty, I think the Khmer identity can only be found in rural area. In the big cities, they are not quite Khmer anymore. They either mixed with Vietnamese or Chinese. Their children know that to get ahead, they must speak English, in addition Vietnamese or Chinese. Most of you have seen and heard it with your own eyes, they are polluting the pure Khmer identity. Their loyalty is to the CPP only, not to Khmer identity. With more investments from Chinese and Vietnamese, more and more of them come to work in Cambodia. Don't be surprise that more and more Khmer identity will be lost. Then come a time they will ask, what is the Khmer identity? I know we all care about identity, because it helps forge loyalty. You will be loyal to those who you most identify with. So the future of Cambodia will be divided into 4 categories 1) Chinese loyal 2) Vietnamese loyal 3) Khmer loyal and 4) I don't care loyal. Khmer land is already beginning to split along these lines.

What? What do you think our Khmers supposed to look? Those Khmer boys are healthy looking wearing good clothes. Don't try to confuse the public that Khmers suppose to be dark. NO.

Theary Seng is very dark like a Black woman, and she is Chinese-Khmer. Do you suppose that Theary Seng is pure Khmer because she is so dark?

It is everywhere. In Vietnam, may still consider themselves Chinese.

In Thailand, I saw no real Thai anymore but Chinese only. In Singapore and Malaysia, Chinese are 50% and soon will out-past Malaysians.

In Philippines now are more Chinese. When I met the Chinese and I asked "Are you Chinese or Taiwanese"? They answered "No we are Filipinos".

Everywhere in the world including Qatar, Saudi Arabia,... their flight attendants look so Chinese, but they answered "No I am Sino-Arab".
Human evolution and it will keep evolving until we all look the same one Race.

Success does not happen by luck, it happens by hard work and careful planning. What is the CPP govt doing besides selling the nation for foreign and rich people economic growth. The gov't needs to make sure the poor and average people are taken care of and can benefit from the development or from the investment. The poor is the vulnerable to any kind of changes and they are the one to pay more attention to and they needed help or they will be the victims. Sadly, many of them are our own Khmer blood people.

In Malaysia, the gov't spend decades to help this group of people to move up the ladder so that they have the equal chance to compete with the rest. I think Cambodia should do the same. If the govt can increase the propensity to spend, they will also help expand the economy and economic growth. If these group of people cannot buy, it doesn't do good for the economy. The rich people can only spend so much. We need growth all sectors in society.

Law is required, year one to year 9 must study purely khmer Language, from year 10 to university student can elect foreign language, however student from year one to year 9 can learn foreign language at their own private time if they wanted to. This law also practices in Canada and other countries, this requirement must implement throu out the public and private school without exception. All official letters must be written in Khmer, street sign and commercial sign must written in Khmer but inner their premises they must put sign in Khmer on top and foreign language at bottom.

I went to China, India, USA, EU and other countries I see no sign of foreign languages in their countries or streets, why Cambodia has to put all sign in foreign language, I went to overseas I have to find the guise to guise me or I have to have their dictionary to translate.

Please look at the beer can or bottle or pure drinking water and so on which produce in Cambodia, the khmer laguage is writen smaller in size than that of chinese or english. Do the product owners respect the Cambodian rule of law. How about the authorities concerned who are responsible for controlling those products do they see those issues or they are all blinded?

Hell is waiting for Hun Sen.

People are SO SO SICK to see this motherfucker uneducated Hun Sen to stay in power.

Since Hun Sen has no education, on international scene, he made Khmer people look bad, dumber than him.

So, go to hell is the eight option for Hun Sen.

Allo,
At least, HS government is promoting education to Cambodia. Unlike KR regime, education was demolished, educated people were killed. stopped blaming at the government. All you people are typical, only complaining. Those khmer kids in Cambodia speak Khmer regardless of their roots. Learning foreign languages are good. This is what we called " multicure".

4:06,
Stop brain wash other people. I heard it everyday, particularly in khmer communities outside Cambodia. Let me ask you, buddy, have you heard the viets talked about vietcong? have you heard about the Germans or Russians talked the tragedy during WW2? Your opinions only to divide khmer. Trust me, I went to school and studied with Viets students. They are not superior or smarter than us. But I know one thing why they are sucessful and better than us. They helped each other to succeed.

Takeo said...

Hun Sen is ignoring is own country is being swallow by the Vietnamese. When the government is ignoring and lawless in every sectors of internal affairs and job markets dependence on foreigners, Khmer language is disappear.

Cambodia will be gone in 20 years by the Vietcong rules. Cambodian is weaker than Tibetan has millions of foreign supporters but still done nothing to stop the Chinese takeover.

All Viets are Vietcong that why they do not dare to talk about themselves, German did/does not talk about WW2 because of their atrosity torward non german particular toward Russian and Jews, For the Russian they did/do not talk about Garman but their government remind them everyday through out education, movies, history book, the Russian government parade in front of Kemlin every years to remind their citizen of Germans invasion and germans atrocity and to show her citizen the victory of Russian over German aggressors.

I totally agree with you that ethenic Viets and Chinese are not superior or smarter than Khmer, but they help each other to succeed.

I don't understand your points. So you think that only German killed non German. Jews were also German, as they lived there for hundreds of years. What happaned to Germany after the war? 90 percents of cities were destroyed by Allies forces, millions of people were killed. Who should they blamed? As for Russian, Stalin killed more than 20 millions people.

Hitler believed in a pure race. He thought Jews were not authentic.

Some said Hitler followed the "Greys" from Zeta Ret..(Serpo planet) who helped him with high technology, so he would rule the earth, then the Greys can use humans for their experiment to revise their civilization while dying.

Our earth has many visitors from other civilizations whose technologies are thousand and million years ahead of us humans.

It is not a science fiction, it is real.

Btw: Don't just focus on a small nation such as Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, etc.. explore more...
Do you know who disabled the US, China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Iran, Israel, Russia, British,.. Missiles?
Their missiles will destroy all of humans. Thanks GOD all missiles were disables.

Do you know Roswell 51? Find out more about what have been happening on earth that will soon effect small nations like south east asia.

Do you know NASA and all governments cover up about what are going on that will effect humans?

The "Greys" are not the one one, there are more whose intelligent is higher than the "Greys".

The Jews were killed by Hitler, but they gained back their Holy land and they are now powerful.

Anonymous said...

NWO is not humans on earth, but the one who disabled the world' missiles. They are highly spiritual entities (extraterrestrials).

I hope they melt down Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand into water, so they can stop fighting.
