National Grieving Shows Importance of Monarchy: Analyst

The outpouring of grief at the funeral and cremation ceremonies for the last king Norodom Sihanouk are proof that the monarchy remains relevant to many Cambodians, a leading analyst says.

Many tens of thousands of mourners have come to the capital to grieve for Sihanouk, who died in Beijing in October. His body was cremated on Monday, and ceremonies have been held throughout the week.

Many mourners came to the capital despite severe restrictions on their participation, Lao Monghay, an independent political analyst, told “Hello VOA” Thursday. That support comes in spite of the monarchy’s current inability to exercise all its power, he said.

Sihanouk was a known political figure, one who led Cambodia through its independence and was a leader during its post-Khmer Rouge years and the civil strife that followed. He was generally loved or respected by most Cambodians, despite his early support for the Khmer Rouge guerrillas as they came to power.

After the Paris Peace Accords, signed in 1991 after talks in which Sihanouk was a key player, Cambodia became a constitutional monarchy. But the role of the Royal Palace has since receded into the political background of the country, Lao Monghay said.

People often seek the help of the throne, held now by Sihanouk’s son, King Norodom Sihamoni, for help on social justice, human rights abuses, improper imprisonment and other issues, Lao Monghay said.

“But it is like the kings cannot intervene on anything, or review any proposals in a positive way,” he said of the current political climate. “This is not their mistake. It’s because the authorities don’t help them fulfill their role.”

For example, new laws now put a commission in control of who should be pardoned by the king, which is counter to the intent of the constitution, he said.

“There is no need to have anyone provide additional protection or support [for pardons],” he said. “They simply have to respect what is in the constitution on the role of the king.”

In another example, the king is supposed to be the commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, he said. This has never been granted.

“Have the king or the King Father ever worn military uniforms to review the troops,” he said, referring to the current monarch and to Sihanouk, who was known after his 2004 abdication as King Father. “This is something they should occasionally allow the king to do.”

Neglecting the role of the monarchy in Cambodian society can have negative consequences, limiting the throne’s ability to maintain stability in the country, Lao Monghay said.

This happened both during the period of Marshall Lon Nol, who led the country after a US-supported coup that dethroned Sihanouk in 1970, and during the Khmer Rouge years that followed, he said.

Chkuot Mar Nokor.

The traitor becomes hero and the hero becomes traitor.

Who brought the Khmer Rouge and Khmer Vietminh to power and killed millions of Khmer people?

Who called on the Vietcong to start attacking Lon Nol / Sirik Matak right after he lost his power?

This devil Sihanouk has gone straight to hell. Hell is not a corrupt entity.

Sihanouk's intention was for Cambodia independance and territorial integrity away from dirty hands of imperialists. He did not foresaw the Khmer Rouge murderous and destructive plans. Khmer Monarchy is good to have since the Thai claims the Khmer tradition, dance, boxing, religion are copied from Thai.

Most of are so barbarous beings, without being spiritual persons you will never reach any level besides "hell and suffering" on earth.

They knew but they forgave the King and they show "unity" to outsiders that they move on for their nation to stay existing.

The vast majority moving forward you need to only save your very own soul to not be sent to hell-sire.

You gave too much credits to Sihanouk. He did after Henry Kissinger told Chou En Lai to take South Vietnam (in History). US abandoned the war because of too much pressure at home. China took over this war from the US then transferring SVN to Ho Chi Minh & Pham Van Dong for the two islands (Paracel and Spratly). Pham Van Dong secretly signed those rich islands to China.

Lon Nol and Sirimatak were abandoned by the US (see Sirimatak's letters to the US).

Not because Sihanouk and Laos allowed Viet Congs used the trail, because Communists already had paths since 1855. That Trail was a pretext to cover up their scheme.

If the US stopped Thailand and Diem from invading Cambodia, Sihanouk would have not sided with the US. But the US was having no interested in helping a small poor country like Cambodia and Laos, the only US was interested it was using Cambodia as battlefield that is all.

China took advantage from this, so Henry Kissinger gave it to China. That was how the US made its EXIT fast.

Now all of them US, China, Russia, ..are back with new strategies.

If the US did not abandon Lon Nol and Sirimatak, Cambodia would have fallen to Communists. Sure Sihanouk had to call for, because he relied on his friends China.

This war China won two rich islands traded with South VN. Viets won by uniting the lands taking more lands from Lao and Khmers. Cambodia and Laos lost, but at least Khmers are more aggressive and more alert than the Lao people.

About losing lives, Viets lost more than anyone, but Viets have a strategy to keep their inside matter secret to keep their people calm by telling lies about the numbers of deaths in Vietnam, while Khmers have continued screaming and yelling for century this division is always among Khmers.

Khmers engaged with too many wars and about 100 million lives lost in their wars, why are they blabbing on this one war?

Today, Cambodia people are not stupid as before and they have learn very well from the past and learn from their parents not to die for you to be rich and creat a new dictatorship again.

Every dicks are the same shit, They love money, pussy more than they love Cambodia. Example: Norodom Ranariddh, Dr Lao Mong Hay, Ngek Bun Chay...as examples for Cambodian people to think. Alot of Cambodian people died to support these dogs but nothing is change and Norodom Ranariddh and Ngek Bun Chay are Hun Sen's dogs.

Why do Cambodian people need to die for another revolution again as every dicks are the same dicks? Mr Kim Soka will be the next Hun Sen's dog after the election that is another trick show.

Yes enjoy whatever you have, because each of human may live up to 80's or rarely 100. About 200 years more the earth will shift, and many nations will be disappeared into the giant sea.

Japan, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, half of China, half of Vietnam and half of Thailand will be sunk into the sea.
Half of India will be sunk.

Australia will gain more islands.
Africa will gain big land.
Europe will be sunk some parts.
Saudi Arabia almost the whole middle east will be sunk into water.

Russia, Canada and US will be be divided to few islands.

South America will be sunk except South Pole.
