Thailand and Cambodia will mark their 61st diplomatic relations tomorrow to reminisce about their long-standing economic, political, social, security and cultural cooperation.
The Joint Commission (JC) has been set up to promote collaborative efforts between the two nations, with great emphasis placed on the aspects of culture, society, national stability, economy and politics.The JC is regulated and overseen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of both countries. Their responsibility is to maintain cordial relationship between Thailand and Cambodia.
The last JC meeting was held in February 3rd-4th, 2011 in Siem Reap, Cambodia. With regards to the management of the overlapping territory around Pra Viharn, the General Border Commission (GBC) and Regional Border Committee (RBC) have been established with both Thai and Cambodian military units operating under their commands in restoring peace and maintaining law and order on the border.
Another unit, the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), has also been formed to assure that both Thailand and Cambodia abide by the demarcation agreement contained in the Memorandum of Understanding ( MOU) signed in 2000. In terms of economy, the total trade value between the two countries reached a significant milestone in 2010, topping 81 billion baht, an increase of 43% from that of the year before, with the border trade accounting for 55.4 billion baht.
As for investment, Thailand has invested 227.6 million US dollars in 82 projects in Cambodia since 1994 ; most of which in tourism, hospital, textile, cement and agriculture, and is the the country's 6th largest investor. In 2010, almost 100,000 Thais traveled to Cambodia, whereas 140,000 Cambodians visited the Kingdom during the same year. In spite of rising trade value in 2011, the statistics revealed that it has begun to decline by as much as 50% since the border tension escalated.
Meanwhile, on the social level, the Thailand-Cambodia Friendship Association has been playing a vital role in promoting good relations between the denizens of both countries in terms of culture, history, tourism, sports, education, public health as well as economy. The Association also gave medical supplies to hospitals in Cambodia in the same year to provide their people access to medical treatments.
