South Korea and Japan, he said, emerged from war and built bustling economies in 20 years. “But [Hun Sen] has occupied power more than 30 years . . . we compare like this”
Prime Minister Hun Sen said yesterday that comparing Cambodia’s progress to neighbouring countries is senseless if taking into account the devastation wrought by the Khmer Rouge and the fact that Cambodia has several active political parties. (sic!)
Speaking at Phnom Penh’s Chaktomuk Theatre on National Culture Day, Hun Sen appeared to be responding to critics of his who have pointed out that he should start measuring success against developed countries as opposed to the wreckage of the past.
“A person said that contemporary Cambodia should not be compared to the Pol Pot regime, and must compare Cambodia to neighbouring countries,” he said. “If wanting to compare to neighbouring countries, be careful to do the same to Vietnam and Laos, [which] have only one [political] party.
“In short, Cambodia cannot be compared to any country.” (sic!)
From April of 1975 to early 1979, Khmer Rouge collectivist programs and a police state mentality lead to the deaths of almost two million people. Educated Cambodians were targeted and infrastructure destroyed, hampering the rebuilding process.
Hun Sen, a former Khmer Rouge cadre, has frequently held up his leadership as a marked improvement from the country’s dark past.
Political analyst Lao Mong Hay said it’s normal for politicians in power to degrade the previous regime and praise themselves.
He said Cambodia progressed, in part, because of “a lot of foreign aid coming in.”
In his speech, Hun Sen said the critics belonged to NATO. Not, he was quick to point out, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but the “No Action Talk Only” group, an undefined set of people who are skilled at speaking and unskilled at following up on what they say.
Human Rights Party president Kem Sokha, who has called Hun Sen out in the past for his comparisons to the Khmer Rouge, said that other countries with historically violent pasts should serve as models for Cambodia.
South Korea and Japan, he said, emerged from war and built bustling economies in 20 years. “But [Hun Sen] has occupied power more than 30 years . . . we compare like this,” Sokha said.

You are number #1 AH HUN SEN is number#2!
AH HUN SEN is a competent fool! If AH HUN SEN think that he is better than himself then he must not compare his regime to Pol Pot regime! AH HUN SEN Vietcong slave never take responsibility for his own failure and even if AH HUN SEN fails and who the fuck is going to do about it!
I feel so sympathy for Cambodian people who are living in the country under this strong man. I don’t understand why people cannot see the bad side of this man. Below are just a few examples:
- East border: The government has threatened its own people not to be involved or concerned. Does this sound right? Just look at all countries around the world, a citizen has his/her own right to protect and concern about his/her country.
- Millions illegal Vietnamese in the country: Why this happens? Where is the immigration law? I feel so sad when I see the Tonle Sab lake are full of the floating houses. Just look at this, how many begs of trashes each house produces each week? So what will be the future of our Tonle Sab lak? Does the government care?
- Corruptions all over the country. All those senior officials are millionaires. Why private company can use the government police and military forces. What is that? Why many schools and hospitals named after Hun Sen and they are claimed to be Hun Sen’s gifts. What is the salary of the Prime Minister? Where did the money come from? Should the building of new schools and hospital be the duty of the government?
- Force eviction for land from the poor
- Lease to private company for 99 years policy. Why has to be that long? How many percent that one can live 99 years?
The above are just a few examples. There many others.
