PHNOM PENH - Ieng Sary, the co-founder and foreign minister of the Khmer Rouge, died early Thursday morning, due to heart complications, officials said.
Ieng Sary, who was 87, was on trial for atrocity crimes alongside two other aging regime leaders when he was hospitalized March 4. His death confirmed the worst fears of victims of the regime: that the leaders accused of crimes including genocide will not see justice under a tribunal that has struggled to complete its work.
Citing doctors at a press conference Thursday, Chea Leang, a prosecutor for the UN-backed Khmer Rouge tribunal, said Ieng Sary died from heart failure. He had been on oxygen and unable to eat in his final days.
Ieng Sary, the brother-in-law of Pol Pot, was a major figure in Cambodia following the ouster of the Khmer Rouge in 1979, helping lead the movement in a factional civil war that lasted until 1998. He was arrested in 2007 and charged with atrocity crimes, including genocide, by the tribunal, where his trial was under way. The case against him closes with his death, Chea Leang said.
The passing of Ieng Sary underscores lingering questions for the tribunal and its ability to complete the trials of former leaders. Ieng Sary’s wife, Ieng Thirith, was released from detention at the tribunal last year, found mentally unfit to stand trial. That leaves just two leaders, ideologue Nuon Chea and former head of state Khieu Samphan, on trial, and two more cases that would require five more indictments and that may never move forward. A hearing is scheduled later this month to determine whether Nuon Chea is healthy enough to continue a trial.
International deputy prosecutor William Smith said Thursday that Ieng Sary’s death before the completion of his trial was “not a failure of the court” and that the work of the court “will not stop here.”
Michael Karnavas, an international defense attorney for Ieng Sary, said he regretted the death of Ieng Sary. “Now he can rest in peace,” Karnavas said. But he also acknowledged the court had moved slowly in bringing him to trial, calling proceedings “very late.”
Ieng Sary’s remains will be cremated at the former Khmer Rouge stronghold of Malai district, Bantheay Meanchey province, about a week from now, according to family members. Armed forces have been deployed to ensure security following his death, officials said.

Hun is the one behind this failed court system. Why did Hun try to cover up such crimes against humanity? maily, because Hun himself is a criminal, and would not want Earng Sary say a thing about the KR regime, e.g if Sary says, 'well I was there and so was Hun', then, this will get Hun into trouble too. e.g if Sary is on trial, hun should also be on trial too, isn't it right?...Therefore, Hun had to do what he did, meaning, making a deal between or among them in order to cover up their crimes against humanity.
In order words, they all are murderers! they have blood in their hands and so, they would not allow the court system to go ahead with their trials. Now, everyone in the right mind would see this clearly. Even the UN knew this as well, but do they care? the answer is 'no'!, why? because no nation would want you to be better than theirs. They would rather see us khmer continuing to go down than to go up. why? because this is the real world, otherwise there is no WWI, WWII and WWIII about to take place at any moment now.
Today, there are stock piles of nuclear bombs ready to go off at any moment and at any time right now. So, it is time to wake up and look at a bigger picture, How are we going to solve the problem of 'khmers kill khmers' for other to benefit from? the answer to this question is conformity, no one wants to solve this problem for us, so we have to learn to solve it ourself, right? so to do this is to call upon all political leaders to discuss on what is important in the development of our nation?
If khmers don't love khmers, no one in the world will, simple as that!. So please, let try to learn from past mistakes and avoid future ones to ever happen again. We need to reconcile and apologie for all the mistakes we made in the past and let move on forward. We must help each other for the benefit of our nation as, together we can stand up tall and look up high. Please try to learn from other successful nations and asking why they are and not us? because they have used the collaboration skills well.
e, g, Yenluck and Abisit, they had conflicts but soon after, they made up for it. Doing so is to show to the world that they are a strong nation and so can we. Therefore, both PM and SR need to talk and apologie to one another for the benefit of our nation. Otherwise, we can not move forward. It is time to show to the outside world that we are also a strong nation too. Please don't let the outsiders get the benefit of our conflicts no more and say 'enough is enough'. Now both Hun and Sam have done alot of good works but lack of collaboration, that is all.

This ECCC in Cambodia has been draggring on and on to avoid ECCC court process so now Ieng Sary die today March 14, 2013 and very soon Nuon Chea will be in the same fate and all the evidence of genocide gone one by one this is the reall reason behind this ECCC in Cambodia has been dragging on and on.
Wake up all Khmer Yuon Hanoi not only killing million of Khmer but put Lao and Khmer under yuon yoke and to exterminate Khmer ethnics by inflowing million and million of illegal yuon migrants into Cambodia.

In 1970 ,hanoi vietcong bring the war to cambodia and killed many cambodians (civil,students,professors,police,soldiers )and destroyed many khmer constructions :houses,schools,bridges (like they put the mine to destroy chroy changvar bridge ,you can ask chea sok which battallon of vietcong put the mine ,now chea sok ,he is a high rank in CPP ),after April 17 1975 many vietcongs named khmer still stay behind pol pot eang sary continue to kill khmer people ( eang sary is a student of hochiminh he fallow the plan of hochiminh to kill and destroy all hkmer culture and khmer soul),at the end of 1975 ,hanoi prime minister came to see pol pot eang sary to congratulate pol pot ,eang sary and talk about the plan to kill khmer people ,hanoi prime minister said that pol pot eang sary did well ,they can evacuate the people from city to the field ,it's easy to kill ,after 1979 ,hanoi vietcong still stay behind hun sen and continue to kill many khmer people by many way and until now hanoi vietcong still stay behind CPP and continue to kill and destroy khmer country ( it has 50% of vietcong named khmer working in CPP government like chuon prasit ,yim chhay ly , hoa nam hong ,im sothy or im you hay.......)the role of their vietcong is to destroy khmer country day to day until hanoi swallow khmer country complete .Why let hanoi vietcong sit outside of the law and laugh behind khmer victim ,we have to bring hanoi vietcong to the international court with the leaders khmer rouge .khmer people have to unite together to save our khmer country from hanoi invader.
You keep ranting about Viet for all problems in Cambodia: Viet control Hunsen, Viet invade Cambodia and Viet bring Commi to Cambodia. Please just look at the photo-see that selfish king? Don't you know Hunsen is Khmer? Read history why Khmer want Commi during the 70s. Stop blaming everyone without dumbing youself.
