More than 10,000 families have poured into an area of Prey Lang forest in Kampong Thom province since January, clearing 20,000 hectares of trees to sell as luxury timber and building houses, Prey Lang Community Network members claimed yesterday.
Community representative Menh Ny said authorities were turning a blind eye to the migrant families’ actions, which included transporting truckloads of luxury timber out of the forest to sell.
“If they are allowed to continue, Prey Lang will be extinct in the near future, because migrants, companies and police forces alike are logging for sales and waiting for volunteer youths to come and measure land,” he said.
An independent source working in the area who asked not to be named for fear of reprisal also said the number of new families in the past three months exceeded 10,000.
Many are believed to be from Kampong Cham, Kratie, Kampong Thom, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng and Takeo provinces.
Ny said he had pleaded with authorities to prevent further damage to the section of the forest the families live on, which stretches from Santouk district’s Boeung Lvear commune to the border of Kratie’s Prek Brosop district.
“The village chief, the commune chief, district authorities and forest administration officers have not taken any action against these families – and they are now trying to arrange documents to let them vote in the area in the upcoming election,” he said.
Ny believed the families had promised to vote for the ruling Cambodian People’s Party in exchange for land.
Sam No, a Prey Lang Community Network representative from Kratie province, also believed authorities were involved in the logging.
“I pity the forest that is being ... cleared away. Police and soldiers are behind it,” he said.
Nou You Sos, who has recently taken up residence on five hectares of what was once thick forest, said talk among migrant families was that Prime Minister Hun Sen’s student land measurers would mark out his plot before July’s National Election.
“I have heard from others that [we] will be [formally given] our land, so I can live here legally,” he said.
Ouch Sam On, Kampong Thom deputy governor, said the number of families who had migrated to the forest was nowhere near 10,000 and the area they had logged was at the edge of Prey Lang rather than in it.
“We have asked our mixed authorities, such as forest administrative officers and police, to go and educate them and prevent them from clearing the forest,” he said. “Now, we’re seeing a decrease.”
Sam On added that authorities would not measure land for people who logged areas of the forest and had not promised land in exchange for votes.
Boeung Lvear commune chief Pen Noeun declined to comment, while Teb Nhata, director of Kampong Thom forest administration department, told a reporter not to “believe what they say”.
A sub-decree in 2011 established Prey Lang as a protected conservation, forbidding clearing of the forest for private ownership.

When Ah Kwak Hun Sen dick is dry then AH Ping Ang will be able to tell us how important the Cambodia forest is to the CPP and to the Vietnamese businessmen.
As we understand, KI only wanted to bring the new, true and the reality to inform the Khmer citizen about the situation in our country.
But the KI has lost their ethical media-press value, because KI only blame the CPP and support the opposition party.
All the political parties in Cambodia have done until today the same ways to select the votes.
The CPP make it own and the new opposition make their own promising for the Khmer people.
The most of the Khmer citizen will able to select the right one, which one, that will help to stabilize and to secure their family's situation.

I don't Ki is the problem here because a lot of things are based on evidence to prove it otherwise,e.g. with pictures and filming like seeing people screaming and their home been destroyed is enough to tell a story from its reality of life. How many times did the cpp lie to its people that it has been developed tremendously but NOT! e.g seeing rubbish everywhere, damaged roads,increased in road accident killing thousand every year, stinky city, stinky markets, increased in beggers, electricity fault, and more. So, how can you justify between great development, and the lost of livelihood as well as being oppressed by this cpp gov't.
Yet, you are in denial and blamed on Ki, (sic!). what ki did is called 'freedom of expression' it is part of their job called 'journalism' bring news to the world where you and I can see from all angles in term of who is right and who is wrong. It is you and your mafia type of gangster leadership style who wanted things done in your own way, for your own interest rather than nation interest, and the truth is, people are no longer being stupid anymore because god has enlightened all of us to see in the name of 'right and just', that is all.

We just want to have a real view of the politcal situaltion in our country. We don't support any one of them, who destroyed or are going to destroy our country Cambodia.

Obviously so called Khmer patriots are being jealous just because some of their so called opposition supporters got lands and houses for free, but on the flip side most of Khmer living oversea are having difficult time paying for their mortgages default. Generally speaking regardless of clearing the forest for houses, people are much happier than living in the street like some of the scamSR's supporters, now at least they have a place to call home is much better than being homeless like most of Khmer dumb oversea.
Cambodian are learning how to adapt and adjust their daily living according to their environments, These people were not being force to live in this land, but it is rather their own choices and their own destination, Dumb asses Khmer oversea should be happy for them for clearing unused lands to build homes and markets for their necessities. Oppositions and their followers are living life discourage and defeat that's why some of their leaders either switch side or simply become a fugitive. Sad to see those dumb asses still have 1920 mentality.

We have seen significant step forward for our current government to subsidize land and forest for their Cambodian people to develop in term of new housing, school,roads, jobs, and market in areas that were unused. Cambodian are immensely grateful for what they have and own, especially their improved life style. Under CPP education is a must for everyone. More and more pupils are now able to study abroad under CPP directions. On the other hand we have those stupid and close minded oppositions that never think outside the box, instead they chose to live below their circumstances. I'm doubtful that their followers are incompetence just like their leaders.

Nobody cares about your view on life since you are full of shit!, just like your name is. Well, with all the wealth that you have there, is not even yours to begin with. Your mafia group made of VC, chen, and Cpp crooks got them from stealing, killing and robbing from our national resources as well as from our poor people. On top of that, dare to go around and beg from the world for more, what ashame!. It is better to be on welfare and be a good citizen than to be a 'murderer, a theif and a crook' like you! what you don't know is, not everyone on welfare is as bad as you described at all e.g. six members of my family are working and paying tax etc, each person paid up to $200-$300 in tax per week, which mean, if I am to be on welfare, I would receive this tax money from one of the six members, whereas, the other five would constribute to the society, OK??? so, before you call us a ' bad welfare collector', you better think tank! OK?.
In the west, we treat everyone the same, whether you are a tax payer or not because everything comes with time, opportunity and luck e.g today I maybe on welfare and tomorrow I may land on a job that worth millions of dollars. Therefore, you are the one who is a close minded not us ever!.OK?.
