Reading MARK -- The Witness to Christ

And this was John the Baptist's message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.  I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Background Notes on the gospel of Mark
Recently, I discovered the sermons of my college pastor online.  While at Georgetown University (1991-95), I, along with 10-20 other Georgetown friends, attended Fourth Presbyterian Church, a 10-15 minute drive from campus through the manicured estates of Northwest Washington, DC to the leafy suburban neighborhood of Bethesda in Maryland.

We drank in the deep wisdom of our college director, Chuck Jacob (now a senior pastor at Knox Presbyterian in Ann Arbor, MI) and of Dr. Rob Norris on Sunday mornings (and at times, classes he taught during the week days).

When I attended, the US Vice-President Dan Quayle and his family (and security detail), my Georgetown professor former UN Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick, and many other well-known names from politics, academia and media, also attended.  Dr. Norris' predecessor was then-chaplain of the US Senate, Dr. Richard Halverson.

All to say, if all of these accomplished people came Sunday after Sunday and benefited from Dr. Norris' sermons, maybe we too can find intellectual as well as spiritual nourishment from these talks?

It does not take long before one is taken in by the profundity and the humor -- not to mention, the accent! -- of Dr. Norris's exposition.

Complete Gospel of Mark

One of the fastest segments of America today are those people who do not go to church.  And that segment is growing quickly.  Not because they’re not religious, but Christianity, despite the mega-church phenomenon in our land, is declining.  And it is declining because people do not trust the Christian message.  Some have got intellectual doubts about its trustworthiness.  Many more have personal experiences of religion that has failed them and soured them.  And some are skeptical of Christianity because they do not know and cannot believe that it has any positive result.  The end of it all is that many do not trust the Christian message.  MOST because they truly do NOT KNOW IT, though they think they do.  They’ve dismissed it, and it is because they have dismissed it that there are questions or because of their experience that Mark’s gospel strikes new cords. - Sermon

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a] the Son of God,[b] as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way”[c]
“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.’”[d]

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with[e] water, but he will baptize you with[f] the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism and Testing of Jesus

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted[g] by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

Jesus Announces the Good News

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.

19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

25 “Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!” 26 The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.

27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.” 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many

29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37 and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

38 Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy

40 A man with leprosy[h] came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

41 Jesus was indignant.[i] He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” 42 Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

43 Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning: 44 “See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.” 45 Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.

Khmer Democrat, if you like the location on the map so much, why don’t you pack your bags and resettle there to be closer to your god. Tell us all about it if there were heaven there.

Amen

I sure get my Divine Power from a power house. How can a person be so naive to say that there is no Divine Power in the Universe?

Where does the sun gets it energy? It has to come from a Divine Source. Your heart and brain gets it Divine Power from a source that is not of your own, that is why you will die wen that source is taken away. Divine Indeed!

Of course there are Divine Powers. If your head and heart are Divine Power how come you are miserable on earth still?

The Divine Powers performed miracles through many chosen people since in the past that humans were able to keep the records in the history.

..Joseph who was sold by his half brothers to be slaves in Egypt. Moses who was saved, then became an adopt son of Pharaoh's daughter,...a poor Friar (Priest) named Padre Pio who died in 1968 after 50 years sufferings from stigma but at the same time he healed million people around the world,.... Padre Pio was able to see through the person's minds.

Today Priest named Fr. Peter Marie Rookey in the US who is over 90 years old now after traveling for many years to help the sick people. He was blind but he was kept praying and praying Jesus in his basement alone. He meditated and prayed and prayed, then one day he could see. After that he traveled around the world to help the poor and sick people. Now he is old he can only help to pray when contact him.

...Now this poor woman from Philippines who worked as a mad in Canada, her name is Elma De Guzman. Thousand people witnessed the miracles. Of course many don't believe because they were not there to observe.

We never heard Khmers ever had good miracles but evil yes.

“If you think that it would be impossible to improve upon the Ten Commandments as a statement of morality, you really owe it to yourself to read some other scriptures. Once again, we need look no further than the Jains: Mahavira, the Jain patriarch, surpassed the morality of the Bible with a single sentence: "Do not injure, abuse, oppress, enslave, insult, torment, torture, or kill any creature or living being." Imagine how different our world might be if the Bible contained this as its central precept. Christians have abused, oppressed, enslaved, insulted, tormented, tortured, and killed people in the name of God for centuries, on the basis of a theologically defensible reading of the Bible. (23)”

“Tell a devout Christian that his wife is cheating on him, or that frozen yogurt can make a man invisible, and he is likely to require as much evidence as anyone else, and to be persuaded only to the extent that you give it. Tell him that the book he keeps by his bed was written by an invisible deity who will punish him with fire for eternity if he fails to accept its every incredible claim about the universe, and he seems to require no evidence what so ever.”

“We have a choice. We have two options as human beings. We have a choice between conversation and war. That's it. Conversation and violence. And faith is a conversation stopper.”

“It is time we admitted, from kings and presidents on down, that there is no evidence that any of our books was authored by the Creator of the universe. The Bible, it seems certain, was the work of sand-strewn men and women who thought the earth was flat and for whom a wheelbarrow would have been a breathtaking example of emerging technology. To rely on such a document as the basis for our worldview-however heroic the efforts of redactors- is to repudiate two thousand years of civilizing insights that the human mind has only just begun to inscribe upon itself through secular politics and scientific culture. We will see that the greatest problem confronting civilization is not merely religious extremism: rather, it is the larger set of cultural and intellectual accommodations we have made to faith itself.”

“It is merely an accident of history that it is considered normal in our society to believe that the Creator of the universe can hear your thoughts while it is demonstrative of mental illness to believe that he is communicating with you by having the rain tap in Morse code on your bedroom window.”

“It is taboo in our society to criticize a persons religious faith... these taboos are offensive, deeply unreasonable, but worse than that, they are getting people killed. This is really my concern. My concern is that our religions, the diversity of our religious doctrines, is going to get us killed. I'm worried that our religious discourse- our religious beliefs are ultimately incompatible with civilization.”

“We read the Golden Rule and judge it to be a brilliant distillation of many of our ethical impulses. And then we come across another of God’s teachings on morality: if a man discovers on his wedding night that his bride is not a virgin, he must stone her to death on her father’s doorstep (Deuteronomy 22:13-21).”

Hello Lady! The one who is in love with an atheist Idiot Harris Sam. You posted in one post you said you believed in God, but neither Christians nor Muslims, bla, bla. then your Hate Christians too much drives you to pick up trash from the atheist to satisfy your hate towards Christians.

You are a hypocrite. How can you claimed to believe in God then you cursed God by following the idiot atheist like Harris Sam whose eyes are so evil.

Well Lady, if you can then listen to the atheist such as Dr. Donald Whitaker said about himself, then my be you can ease your hate a little.

That idiot Harris Sam not only his eyes are so evils, his country USA has more than 96% believe in God, thus makes him a minority atheists.

Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.

Not everyone is destined (mien Nissay) to meet/know God. The one who is running around collecting posts from atheists to bash God has a chance to meet/know God, but it is up to him or her to decide.

God gave her or him two routes to choose: heaven or hell. Either she or he makes peace with God and ignore others whatever they do, or he or she just continues to bash others.

I watched and listened to this Medical Doctor Donald Whitaker, I got goosebumps. Dr. Whitaker was a very bad atheist but until he fell so sick and saw himself in hell, he never again bad.

True not everyone is destined (mien nissay) to meet or to know GOD.

Old Khmers used to say "Manuss mien bab chreun Beu Kmean nissay Chuopr Preah, tveu bonn pon-nah kor min chourp Preah dae."

Million Buddhists mien nissay and believed that Jesus Christ is Preah Se-ar-Metrey.

When I look @ Harris Sam's eyes, they reminded me of the evil eyes I saw in the documentary of Tomb Stone.
His eyes are absolutely evils.

Preah Se-ar-Metrei (Jesus Christ) already appeared still some Buddhists do not see or know Him.

12:34 PM,

When Buddha passed away, YOUR God ( Jesus ) was not even born yet !!!!!!

Amen

Just because you was born from your father does not mean in your many past life, you were not the grand father or father of your current father.

There was a new in Cambodia not long ago, a little boy called told everyone in his family that his grand-mama was his wife.

GOD can choose to manifest His power such as be born in human any time any generations, according to His plan his design.

Those many Indian dead Buddhas as well so many dead Holy people out there and all things dead and alive in the universe including Extraterrestrials ... were all created by GOD.

GOD is the Alpha and the Omega. It means "the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End".

He chose to come any time in any century, He is alive. Abraham was about 5000 to 6000 years ago met the Holy Spirit "GOD". Moses was about more than 4000 years ago met the Holy Spirit "GOD". His resurrection and his million miracles, healing... have been proved to billion people to be true. GOD incarnated as a Holy baby whom million Buddhists believed He is Preah Se-Ar-Metrei, and He will come again to judge the living and the dead (souls), Khmer said "Sassna, Pleung chhess karl".

Until this hour GOD appears to people who seek for Him and who are destined to meet Him (Mien Nissay) among them are Muslims, Buddhists, Hindu... and continue to rise in everywhere on this planet earth including in China, Vietnam and Thailand, Burma,...

If you see that Mao, or Hitler, or Stalin,... Ho, Hun Sen who killed many lives as from the Divine powers, I would say Yes or No.

(1) "Yes" Those killers were the instruments of the Divine Powers that put them into actions. It was the punishments upon the Bap-Kam(sins) of the people who were killed. May be the Divine Powers used Hitler, Mao,.. to kill the sinners.
The 800 years of Khmers' sufferings, it's the sins of Khmer Buddhists, the evil Buddhists who followed no GOD nor Buddhas nor their ancestors, but followed only EVILS such as Snaeh, Ab-Thmub, Ampeu, Curse, etc...

(2) "No" I do not know what is going on in the Universe just like the rest of the creatures on this planet as well as all planets in all Galaxies. All I knew from my experiences is when I am more toward calmness and seeking higher realm (spiritual) I received a positive energy, but if I did the opposite, I received negative results later on. It may be connecting to Karma.

Siem, Yuon and the endless sufferings of Khmer people are KHmer Buddhists' Kam Krass (Thick or heavy sins) they committed.

Khmer Buddhists have never admitted their wrong doings that they destroyed the powerful economy of the Khmer Empire with their million lazy monks who contributed ZERO to the nation, but they are good on blaming others.

Million Monks, million mouths to be fed. These million monks have free meal, good life, good places to sleep and live while the million Khmers are poor homeless.

Not only those poor people have to feed the million monks, they have to bow down their heads to the ground to these lazy monks.

Monks do not serve or wash the sick people feet, but they are here to be served by the people who feed them.

Million monks are the leaches and the destroyers of Khmers' economy.

Buddhism should be reformed, by not allowing to have too many monks.

Are you kidding? Hun Sen & his wife Bun Samhieng, and their family members are low class people. Regardless how much money and power they have, they cannot be civilized at all. This 1;29am is Hun Sen & Samhieng' people. When you saw one you see all.

Anonymous said...

You cannot deny this guy 11;45 pm spoke of incarnation that you can be your current Dad or Mom' parent in your past life. It is not the current body that can prove who is old or young than who, it's the soul (spirit, energy...) that can. Gotoma Buddha claimed that he went through for too many (countless) lives to at last became Buddha. We all are the same, just that we don't remember our many past lives. You cannot rational debate, then we readers have to classify you in Hun Sen & Samhieng's people.
