'Seven years later, the Three Georges dam appears to be China’s greatest short-sighted decision in its era of modernization and industrial development.'
By Emile Bouffard
Global Research, February 08, 2013
The Political Bouillon
China’s Three Gorges dam, completed in 2006 and put
into use last summer, is the world’s largest source of ‘clean’ hydroelectric
power. With a generating capability equal to that of 15 nuclear reactors, the
project has been hailed as a solution to China’s massive energy crisis.
However, before the project had even been completed, major concerns were voiced
over the potentially disastrous environmental repercussions of this massive
engineering project. Seven years later, the Three Georges dam appears to be
China’s greatest short-sighted decision in its era of modernization and
industrial development.
The dam has certainly been a crucial element of
China’s ‘green’ initiative, aimed at decreasing reliance on non-renewable
sources of energy, in particular, coal. However a decrease in carbon emissions
does not necessarily create an environmentally friendly energy strategy – for
example, the use of the colossal reservoir had led to weakening of the river
banks, causing massive landslides in populated areas. And these are just the
beginnings of the problems.
The creation of the dam has slowed the normally quick
flowing river, causing silt in the water to settle on the riverbed. This not
only decreases the concentration of nutrients in the water, but damages
existing ecosystems. Stagnant water in the reservoir could also boost pollution
levels and water-borne diseases; already major issues for the population in the
area. While constructing the dam, the Chinese government moved an estimated 1.3
million people from their ancestral homeland along the river valley. As the
reservoir continues to weaken the riverbank, erosion is expected to displace
another 100, 000 people. Decreased level of silt downriver of the dam may lead
to poorer agricultural yields , with important nutrients settling to the bottom
of the reservoir. Perhaps the most frightening possible consequences of the reservoir
is an increase in earthquakes. Geologists fear that the weight of the reservoir
may actually cause seismic activity over the two major fault lines that the dam
rests on.
In addition, vulnerability of China’s already
endangered species is increasing, as huge amounts of water are moved around the
watershed. Many fragile ecosystems have been destroyed when water levels have
changed dramatically. Wetlands, home to many unique species, are especially
susceptible to changes in the river – populations of species such as the Baiji
dolphin, Chinese sturgeon, and the Siberian crane are endangered because of the
Three Gorges dam project.
The Three Gorges Dam shows with brutal clarity, that
China traded short-term gains for long-term social and ecological problems. The
energy gained by this project is not clean, and it will have long-lasting
effects on a waterway that runs through over half of the country. The
environmental effects of this dam will be long-term, and in most cases,
irreversible.
Now that the Three Gorges Dam is in full use, these
environmental problems will have to be solved rather than prevented. The
world’s largest ‘clean energy’ project has already caused and will continue to
cause permanent geological and ecological damage.

I CAN FLY HIGHER THAN AN EAGLE!!!
The beauty of nature is that everything is naturally made and naturally flowed, but when mankind interfered with nature, then things will most certainly be effected by what we have created. But then again, we need to find ways to sustain life without depending on oil, coal and other deposits under the earth surface; and hydropower is what on the agenda. Look at the Niagra Fall in Canada for example. Just imagine how much of her wealth spent on Niagra Fall before it can produce electricity for most of Canadians living in the area. If Niagra Fall can be made into a hydropower generator, then certainly these three hydro dams (Gorges)can also be transformed into another potential hydropower for China. Not that I am taking the position to defend China, but China is a huge country that has lots of people and to depend on oil and coal alone, simply means China will depend on other nations to provide these resources. For those nations that provide China with oil and coal will make lots of money from China and they not wish for China to stop using oil and coal for that matter. If solar is to be tapped for its enormous power, then the center of the earth would be another subject which should be on China's Top Agenda. Human experiences came from mistakes that were made along the way. To avoid these colossal mistakes, China needs to get together with other nations that has experienced in finding these resources for the purpose of sustaining life. The three dams (Gorges) in China will be a prime example of how far mankind will pursue if possible, to find the best way possible to tap into free energy. There is one matter which is very important that is worth mentioning, the Mekong River and its naturally flow. If China is to focus on building these future dams, if without consideration for those nations locate below China, countries such Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam, future problems can be enormous and it is better to plan ahead and continue to press for better assessments before allowing China to build future dams. Mekong River has been here on this planet since the beginning of time and space, thus, to interfere with the flow of the Mekong could have a devastated effect on most nations and the weather system, such as jetstream and circular motions that can produce larger tornadoes, hirruances and super storm on ocean front and coastlines. China, you have been warned.

10:27 AM. Would be better if we can control the current flow of the Mekong River and flush Hun Sen and the his Youn family down the drain instead of destroying the Khmer natural environmental source of ecosystem.
Phnom Penh Post?
Is that sabotage of freedom of speech?
KI-Media could get tangled in lots of troubles because of Phnom Penh Post!
Can KI-Media afford to stay afloat then?

I doubt that you will ever hear from Phnom Penh Post. The intellectual property law does not apply to those who residing outside of Cambodia. Unless, this name has been used to do fundraising or makes money for personal reasons or sorts, then the implication of breached of the law might be held accountable. In this case, it is just a Goddamn public username which it carries no weight for the amount of crimes it inflicted. Ki Media is a public domain where this site brings up-to-date news from all over the world and specially from Cambodia. Since I am Khmer, thus I am practicing my free speech and my Goddamn rights to use any Usernames as I am please. For other Phnom Penh Post, I could careless, unless I am in breach of any agreement between PPP and myself as a public user. I have no Goddamn intention to sabotage this site. Ki Media is trying to do their best by bringing news for all Khmer Citizens who are living outside the Goddamn country. Phnom Penh Post, for all I care is just a Goddamn username and it has no Goddamn value beyond the boundary of Cambodia. However, when it comes geopolitics, I have a lot to talk about when it concerns my country and the security of my Goddamn country. Why one might ask? Well, I am Khmer. I was borne Khmer. I speak Khmer; I write Khmer; I understand Khmer; and so, I care for my Goddamn country since I am Khmer. I hope I have made myself very clear.
Phnom Pench Post
Okay smart guy @1:36AM,
Hopefully, nobody on the KI-Media team doesn't have to get involved in reporting to Google as to what you are doing here on KI-Media.
I will personally see to it that you will not destroy KI-Media.
3:19 A.M
You seem to care so much about KI Media, yet you have failed to see that I too, am also care about KI Media. Having said that, we have the same goal and principle. Why then must you spent a lot of time surveillance Ki Media which is so unfair to me as a Ki Media visitor. In addition, you have accused me of trying to sabotage Ki Media without any evidence which could possibly places me with such a character. The reason I come to Ki Media, I wanted to use my free speech and voice my opinions as I see fit. I care not to live under anyone regime without just and fair for all. My country has been long under a threat from her neighbors and as Khmer, I have the duty to do what must be done, by speaking against any regimes, enemies, terrorists and dictators who wanted to destroy my nation. Furthermore, as Khmer, we have the responsibility to speak against anyone who brings harm to Cambodia. My friend, you ought to stand beside me and unite the force and defend what is rightfully ours and to take back our country and change the course of history. We, the next generation, shall not bow down to dictators, strongmen, thieves, antagonists, and those whose ambitions wanted to annihilate Cambodia. We are the new Khmer, must think like the white race in all over the world. We must learn to use our head. We must learn to use our intelligence. We must learn to protect our country by all means when necessary. The world does not belong to the weak, but the strong and the intelligent ones. To have the strongest grip and rule the nation, law is the key open all doors. If the US with over 306 millions in population can do it, we, Khmer, can also do it better. We have Angkor as our prime example for all to see. The Discovery Channel has once said, that Cambodia was the most powerful nation on earth and has the greatest civilization far better than that of Rome and Europeans. If that is the case, then we, Khmer, can revive our civilization once more. To get there, we need the right leadership, the right Administration, the right Constitution, the right mindset and the right followers; and above all else, we must have the right government. We must promote Science, Physic and Mathematics. The world in itself is created from the God Particle. To understand what the God Particle is, we will depend on our educators, scholars, professors and students who will work hard toward the glorified Kingdom we once were. The world is not the same as we know it. The reason it is not the same, it is because of technology. Space program, satellites, drones, UAV, grid systems, table of elements, computers, robotics, infra-red system, solar system, hydro-system, hydrogen fuel, oil, coal, uranium, plutonium, cold water, thermo nuclear power, these are just some of the new founding of scientific technologies that help sustain life or destroy life. We must learn to think. Thank you.

If this [Phnom Penh Post] is a risk to KI-Media, why doesn't School of Vice do/say anything about it???
When the shit hits the fan, remember:
Every man for himself...
Sauve qui peut...
This world system is on the accelerating downward spiral ready to crash. Out of 7 billion or so of world population only about 1 billion people will survived this crash. Man is not in control of his own destiny, only what God will his counsel stand!!!

Am I a risk or a better informed citizen and I prophecy the truth as I see them. Why waste time on me when you can read my substances to which I have brought to Ki Media and for our Khmer compatriots. Learn to use your brain properly. Although we are borne from the same passage, but our brain and intelligence, certainly not the same. There are eight directions within planet earth if you think about them. I see only from one angle and likewise, you are seeing from another. So, to be fair for all of us, do not waste more time on this username Phnom Penh Post, but read the substances of which I have brought to Ki Media. I do offer my conclusion every time I am done reading Ki Media postings. For this reason, I have the right to voice my opinion as best I know how. It is not very difficult to comprehend such magnitude problems when you begin to use your brain. These dams(Gorges) built by the Chinese, it is simply telling the world, specially United States and England that..."dont fuck with China!. We are on our way to dominate the world and we will take the # 1 position away from you." or..."China is a nation that cannot be pushed around and we will show the world of what we can accomplish if we are able to steal intelligences and technologies from advanced nations such as US, UK, France and Israel." It has always been about competitions. Politically and economically when it comes to world domination between super power nations. Water is also a commodity. Water can be bought and sold across the globe. If China can steal water from any nations below China, then why not. And China did just that without considering other nations that lie beneath China. This is my prediction. In the long run, China will be much colder than what it appears today. Why? With all the water that China has withheld from these damns, China will interfere with nature and its cycle of moving water across the globe with the natural flow as it intended to be. Furthermore, China will have to face more problems in the near future.

not every man for himself. look at all the super power nations, they all work for the benefit of their country and nation, that is why they are called the 'super power nations'. the only nation that as described 'Everyone man for himself', is only, of the khmer leaders like Kingta, Pol Pot, Hun Sen and other traitors etc...who listent to outsiders to help to destroy srok khmer in believing that they could rule forever with their (VC and Chen) help.
To the outsiders, they want nothing more than to destroy you and to take over your country, that is all.
So, wake up before it is too late because it is not about everyman for him but every man for the benefit of all e.g 'all for one and one for all', chinese proverbs...or one stick can easily be broken but with a bunch of sticks, no one can break it apart, simple as that!
when the way you say it, you must be a criminal of all times, you rule to rob, steal and to kill, but you forgot that 'nothing last forever', so might as well do good. e.g what happened to all of our predecessors or the supperior ones before us? gone, they all dead and so are we, but before we die what did you do? will you be known as another traitor too or a hero.
Remember heroes will live forever and wicked like you, only for a short time being and then you will be burnt in hell forever, screaming hot hot and hot, simple as that. For the thieves like the VC, Chen and the CPP traitor crooks, huh! will be gone and doomed like one too.
Peace

You are right, water is a source of life. What Chinese is doing is called 'plan attack'. They are able to think critically ahead of time. History has shown their technology is way beyond their time of their existence, for thousands of years e.g the first one to discover Iron Oar, Campus, first time ticking clock etc.
Coming back to the dams, yes, once they are able to control water system, they are able to destroy the whole lowland areas of the southeast asia like Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Viet etc. this is just a matter of time, really. In this sense, they don't have to spend their $ or the lives of their men to destroy us, but simply says, nature strike and then, would blame no one and it is also called the 'perfect crime', simple as that.

Phnom Penh Post can make any comments he wishes. What is important is that he is an educated person.
What i dont understand is why you 7:01 AM, keeps suggesting he is a risk to Ki Media, but yet to comment or reply to the issues PPP has raised.
From what i can see, you are a CPP dog. You are paided to confuse Khmer but trying to cause conflict and distract readers.
Your Youn trick no longer works. I suggest that you reply to him and stop changign the subject. Or are you scared that your low life intelligent will not win against the educated Khmer such as the oppositions?
You mark my word from today onward, China will have to face many problems with these damns until this water, silt, grass and other minerals which bind everything together, then the normal behavior shall return to China. Let me express myself by making a simple example or analogy where in layman term and all can be easily understood: Human depends on breathing, if there is any constriction to the breathing then certainly there shall be problem of the bodily functions. If I have taken my hand and squeeze your throat very hard, what do you think the result of your breathing would be and what the effect of the breathing would be like? The same as the Mekong River which flow from Tibet down toward the ocean crosses Tunle Sap in Cambodia, and when the water level is equally filled, these water will flow back into Tunle Sap and this is the reason why Tunle Sap is a very unique lake in Cambodia where river flows backward. If you do not believe me you can google and learn the truth about Tunle Sap. This is the ONLY river in the world which flows backward. The weather system will change in the near future if China continues to disobey and interfere with nature's law. The reason why China needs these dams was because of her enormous populations. To keep China up to speed and to challenge US and Russia, China needs all the help she can get. Just google and check how many barrels of oil China used per day, not to mention coal. This would be the only choice China has by building dams which produce free energy from Hydro-Electric-Generator. Those nations that are selling oil and coal to China will be effected by these dams, because China will consume less oil and coal or China would focus on her new achievements by understanding on how to use nature for her benefit. Sun Tzu: The Art of War. Sun Tzu wrote this book for their military strategists. According to Sun Tze, "he who wants to win the war must learn to use his environment for his own benefit. It does not matter what it is. It can be wind, water, fire, sun and moon, so as long as these objects will bring him great success." Look at the Great Wall of China, the discovery of gun power, crossbow, fireballs into cannon balls. These are just some the few examples of which I have brought to prove my point. As a nation, we can learn from many advanced nations which exist throughout the world. No one is stopping us, but ourselves. No other nations can tell Cambodia what to do, but our government lacks of their ability to foresee the future. With a nation of less than 15 millions, with the mass density of land of 181,035 km2, we can do much more than what we are doing everyday. Now is the time where all Khmers must rise to the challenges. There are many Khmers who are living outside of Cambodia and we have access to intelligences, information, technologies, institutions, and assistance from all over the world to offer a helping hands. In addition, there are world infrastructures available for Cambodia to ask for assistance such, World Bank, ADB, IMF and even many nations around the world who are willing to help Cambodia so as long as we are willing to sign certain agreement before those monies can be transfered to Cambodian National Bank; evenso, those who are working for the Cambodian government must not be corrupted or else it is no use borrowing millions of dollars from these institutions to pay for infrastructures we need in order to reconstruct Cambodia into the New Cambodia.

All Khmer must die in the years to come!
Cheyo yuon!
PPP. You have taught me so much.
I didnt believed you when you said thet Tonle Sap river flows backward. But you were right!
Not only is Tonle Sap the largest freshwater lake in South East but this unique lake also causes the water to flow backward when the lake is full.
For 1000 years this unique river lake was the home of the Khmer people and the Khmer civilisation. It is also this lake that supplied the food to our Angkor Wat habitants.
Now it is full of Youn invaders. Maybe they know the secret to our Khmer heart!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonl%C3%A9_Sap
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5039980
1.2 million Youns and Cham lives in the Tonle Sap lake. I wonder what is the Youn population before 1975 compared to the Youn population today?
PPP
you are so right!
Tonle Sap in fact is the only tlifeline for all its habitants and yes, it is true the about reversal flow, it is so amazing how everything being renew from its evironmental ecosystem e,g, from the deep of 0.5 up to 15metre high and how its mangrove became rotten to produce its nutrient into such a vibrant, full of life and full of beauty within its existence, but sadly, what the Chinese is doing is to kill off slowly. For the Chinese, they don't care as long as their nation is saved is all it matters. But they forget that, they are actually doing it to themselves also. Had they think wisely, they could have benefited more from us. e.g they could have planty of fish to eat through trading, because Tonle Sap is where fish like stay and grow, with such a healthy ecosystem, hum you can't get better than that, like, foods that never runs out etc. But if only they know better, that is all.
To kick the youns and chams from Tonle Sap, we must drain the lake and fill it up with dirt and gravel. Then no youns and chams can fish on it, and they must go somewhere else to live. WE must have strategies, otherwise they will continue to come and live on the lake. Right now no land is left, we can fill the lake with dirt and build houses for the poor families. Who cares about the fish, we can catch them from the sea. The reason we didn't have good fishing vessels and fishing industry is because of Tonle Sap, if we could fish there why bother to fish at the sea right? It discourages us to ever rely on Tonle Sap. The Lake will eventually dry up with of big rubber plantations that will require a lot of water for irrigation. Laos build a bunch of dams to generate electricity for hard cash. We know that they also gro agrocultural products, and they will depend on a lot of water.
